Incredible post, as a longtime Laurel and Hardy fan I thought I'd seen it all. If you don't already have it, I highly recommend the european box set of all of L & H's shorts, silents and almost all of their features. The DVDs released in the states have been mostly shameful! And it's a real trip to see the boys speaking spanish and german in alternate foreign versions!
I believe this film was shot in "Cinecolor" (or similar inexpensive color dye), because it was cheaper than shooting in the more expensive Technicolor process during the war.
This was produced in 1943 for the U.S. Department of Agriculture/Forest Service [as part of the "Government Defense Reel" series], with Stan & Ollie's scene filmed inbetween production of one of their features at 20th Century-Fox. Only those associated with the Agriculture Dept. and the Forest Service saw this brief film. Most of us wouldn't see this until decades after World War II ended.....
This was made in color. It looks much different that those that were colorized after production. It's sad that this PSA is the only color film they the boys made.

Not bad for a government film! Very interesting actually; and Laurel and Hardy could make even dubious material enjoyable. They were so great!

Yes, the voice over does sound like it is Stan. I would never have thought of that but listening closely I can hear him.
MikeHudson65 4 years ago
It's not Stan, Stan was British.

The narration was actually provided by Pete Smith, a film producer who also narrated numerous documentary shorts.

How much of this stuff is now made with petroleum?
Jmcenanly 4 years ago
worrying to think how many trees are chopped. terrible. are modern plastics made from trees too? sos:?
fusionfreq 4 years ago
No, Most plastics today are derived from petroleum. We could do a lot better if we could make the hydrocarbons from things other than petroleum.

This voice over sounds a bit like Stan himself using a different tone. Listen closely.

The narration is done by Pete Smith.
stoogeophile 4 years ago
That's what the narrator says, its not necessarily true. Bit of a bland name, no?
ClownPoet 4 years ago
Have you really not heard of Smith? The Pete Smith short comedies were enormously successful.
