  • Yeah for sure, its not the complete Instrumentalpart, but isn't that better than NOT playing Ripples? 10 Minutes like on the Album would have been too much time for a STADIUM audience. There are always songs that are working better in halls than in stadiums... And I have to say that Cinema is one of them.At least the Full Version.

The instrumental part of Ripples would lose its intimate mood in front of over 100.000 people i think. And its sstill a better choice than In too deep :D

  • The band has zero energy! Dead in the water. In 2007, they were probably too tired to do the entire song.

  • Weak edited version! Why in the world did they cut out the best part of the middle instumental section. They had too many edited songs on the 2007 tour!

  • una obra maestra de este tipo no importa si se le baja el tono para que el senor collins pueda cantarla mas tranquilo... ripples... never come back!!!!

  • Chester Thompson on drums...

  • I have forever love this song..Its beautiful, its amazing and its by a rock band...Its just such an amazemnt

  • Just read that Phil is retiring. If this is true, then this song has even a greater meaning than ever before. So happy they did this in concert. So sad I did not go and see them one last time. So much of today's music is crap. Not all, mind you, but a large portion of it. When I look around and see what today offers us, musically, I can't help but be a little sad, for it is yesterday that holds the hapiest days of my life.

  • A shame Phil was a bit off his game with this performance. Voice ran out of gas on some of the vocals. He did an excellent job with it on the When in Rome dvd, though. As usual, the instrumentals are stellar.

  • davvero niente male...

  • I think this live version is superior to the album version :)

  • @SPeacock

You must be kidding. The studio version puts this to shame. The best part of the instumental part is cut out here. This is an embarrassing edited version with average musicianship. The 1978 or the 1980 versions blow this away.

  • @SPeacock dude...not even close...they altered it,it's ok,but ok is not good for a band like Genesis !

  • I think the decision to cut the instrumental section in half was moronic. They left out the BEST PART!! WHO'S IDEA WAS THIS ?

  • @hubiex I'm guessing....theirs?

  • @hubiex I didn't even notice.

  • @hubiex

Yup! The 2007 tour had too many edited songs. To cutout the best part of Ripples was horrible! This is a weak edited farce! Which is worse, this or the only 2 minutes of Duke's Travels they did.

  • I prefer his voice back when he had the beard. 1980 is voice sounded best!! But he sounds great for his late 50's. I miss when he had more power in his voice.

  • @bassmanjoe I think phil is a better singer now in a technical standpoint.. but he lost that quality he had back in the day

  • Great, but I continue to prefer the original version.

  • Beautiful song. :) I want to play this as a lullaby to my son or daughter one day.

  • Love Daryl Steurmer's playing in this. In fact he seemed to have a better sound than previously in general in this tour...

  • This song brings both good and bad memories back but no matter how bad it is, this song makes you happy and if the memories are good this song makes them better. Genesis has made a song that will last for century's.

  • TRES BELLE VIDEO GRAND GENESIS..

    Excelente!

  • my best friend died and he loved this song so we played it at his funeral

    bin schon stink sauer !

  • Die beste Video/ Tonqualität ! Danke.

  • Wolf.28.08.09Ich war mit meinem FREUND

auf diesem Konzert. Ripples ist mein FIRST SONG from1976. Das Medley der

80´er vor allem war Live ein Genuss!

  • Just shows you how far Phils voice has lost it. I know its 30 years plus since this was originally recorded, but he sounds awful.

  • Unfortunately I know what you mean. I don't think it's so much that his voice per se has deteriorated but more that it's very very hard to sing without decent hearing in one ear....

  • @cosmicjazzer He went partially deaf?

  • Unfortunately, yes. P C lost much of his hearing in one ear some years ago.

  • For my very dear friend, Matt, who sadly passed. We enjoyed many Genesis concerts together over the years & you died much, much too young. I know you are in a happier place now, but I miss you terribly. Until we meet again my friend...

  • Masters of their instruments !

  • I still think this is one awsome song,i used to do roady work for GENTLE GIANT,and they to played a similar kind of sound, and i love tat piano piece that goes into the instrumental bit.

    BON VOYAGE.

  • Two weeks in Spain!!!!!

  • 1:46 tony is drinking some beer :]

  • BLISS !!:-)

  • I love the instrumental and Daryl's Guitarsound

  • This version can't hold a candle to the one on Genesis Archive #2. That version is so powerful. This one....isn't. Yeah I know they're all 27 years older, but still. Phil can't even do this song with half the energy he sang this with in 1980.

  • Give him props for standing up there and doing it....even though he is clearly struggling here, he's pulling off as decent a version as he can.

  • He's trying to pay tribute to Steve and put his own stamp on it

  • I like this much better. With the ,,Pheel" of 1980 it's a little bit too ,,Heavy Metal". This ist with more Energy, and the Rome Concert was much better.

More Atmosphere, more Feel. That's how i like it.

    A very good perfomance, anyway

  • Ripples 1976 doing shroomers in Saratoga Ca UNbelievable

  • @jimmybfan

They didn't do Ripples in 1976. 1978 was the first time live.

  • Brilliant! They were so good before they became a singles band.

  • Amen Jack.

  • The best song ever !!!!

  • Still shows what they used to be. The GREATEST band EVER!

  • Hm, looks like they are frightend to play with full power & heart. Remembers me to an old man not having sex to aware a heartattack.

Sorry, I'm a big genesis fan but...

  • Reply to 'SireThomasAsh'

Yes, it's not performed with the same passion as in the older days. Also it is slower, and in a lower key. But it is still a good performance, I think.

  • Sure it is, but my heart is a little bit upset, when I see new shows and old ones. I bought a 1976 dvd yesterday. They had so much power and fun. It looks at me they haven't the same fun like in old days.

  • Just want to say, 1976 was 33 years ago, im sure they all had more energy back then!

  • Exelente. Un emblema. Inagotable!!!

  • Phil's voice may not be the same as it once was. The instrumentation may not be the original, The flow might be a tad off, as has been pointed out in other posts. But, it's still great to hear this song again. Folks- life changes, that's what this song is about. "And the face in the water looks up and she shakes her head as if to say that it's the last time you'll look like today sail away away you know that ripples never come back"
  • grandi grandi grandi!!!!!!

  • Daryl's solo on this rendition of the song gives me chills every time I hear it. They couldn't have found anyone better to replace the great Steve Hackett.

  • how do they make an acoustic sound with electric guitars?

  • The guitar, more than likely, is equipped with a piezo pickup in the bridge that allows it to have a more acoustic sound.

  • I like this version but it´s a shame that the guys shortened the guitar solo in the middle. Although it sounds pretty impressive!

These guys made my childhood brighter, it´s my first real love :-)))))

Hope they´ll come back one day.... I believe!!! YES THEY CAN!!! :-)))

  • Yes, my idols are getting older, they'd come with me long years of growing. I never forget my times as a teenager, sitting in front of my window, listen to this song and forget my world around...! When I see this version I hope that they never forget, that they started as a prog band!!!! Keep on boys, and make a last great progalbum with Peter and Steve..only for a moment be a part of many good memories...

  • It does seem a bit stilted and not flowing smoothly like the original, plus Phil cant help putting in the 'stylings' in his voice that he's picked up since the late 70s,that have put so many people off him..is a shame as 'Trick Of The Tail' and 'Wind And Wuthering' are still my favourite Genesis albums, and i actually prefer Phil's live version of 'Supper's Ready' on 'Seconds Out'.

  • You know, even though Phil's voice has gotten deeper and isn't quite as powerful as it used to be, I love how he sang it in this version. You can tell he's really trying. And the guitar in the middle was every bit as effective as on the album.

  • They did this song much better back on the

duke tour.Listen to the version on the box

set 1976 1982,it blows me away!!!!!!!!!!

  • For example, the way they played Firth Of Fifth didn't give me any goosebumps like the original version or some of Steve's versions. Sometimes they lack "that feel" by just playing hard on drums and keyboard and putting that awful Daryl's guitar solo. However, songs like Tonight Tonight Tonight, Mama and Land of Confusion were very very nice. But they are from the pop era. They're different.

  • I think we get different impressions from the songs. I'm not saying that they didn't do well recently, but that some songs simply don't match the original stuff.

  • I know that music is a matter of taste and I just told you my opinion. But, I don't think they played that good. Phil's voice is getting tired, Daryl's guitar is no match for Steve's guitar and Chester didn't put that "deepness" required for playing Ripples like in the original version. Putting all these things together, even if the results are good, they aren't as good as it could be. Plus, its normal that they change style after some time and the new style doesn't fit the mood of the songs.

  • Yes i really dont agree with you, but i do see that in this video his voice did not sound that good. I have other versions from his 2007 tour and they play it mutch better.

  • Painful as it is i gotta agree with u.

however its amazing how Phil's voice sounds just like it always has. but theres no doubt the man is not the 18 year old he was before, and those of you who are big fans of him like me know that he planned his touring days on his 2005 farewell, but the stage is his home, he cant leave it- no matter how much he wants to

  • You know, some bands were so good at some point of their carreers that they could never match the quality of their own material a few years later. How can we expect Ripples to be at least as good as the original version without Hackett, without Phil's voice the way it was and without him on drums? I think the only way one could make Ripples better was to hire an orchestra, a bunch of talented musicians, a female singer, call Steve back and really work on the song again. :P

  • Frankly, I don't think "Ripples" has ever sounded more beautiful than it did last year. Same goes for "Carpet Crawlers". I don't feel that the band members have to be in their physical and creative prime to sound as good or even better than they did in the past. IMHO, at least half of the set last year was the best they'd ever played those songs.

  • Well, it's weird for me to think how people can prefer the regular version of Carpet Crawlers after hearing Carpet Crawlers 1999. If the whole Lamb was reworked like that, it would be one of the best albuns in the world, ever.

  • This songs fuckin awesome!!

  • Bleh, a step down.

Does anyone know if there's a song they didn't do a step down on this tour? Did they tune/transpose their instruments down a step?

  • Who gives a f**k? They played "Ripples"! *salivates*

  • pittfan, you're right,sorry

  • You know, I hate to say this but this is a better version (visually) than the one on the Rome DVD. Anyone know who directed this?

  • Damn. Even the actual band is playing the solo wrong. Steve Hackett originally used a hand-held synthesizer on the solo called an E-bow.

  • I love Rutherford's double neck instrument!

  • Shergold

  • this is actually the first time they ever played this song live on tour, they also never played trick of the tail live either. phil said trick was strictly a studio song, that wouldn't translate live well

  • WRONG. They played this on the Duke tour and the ATTWT tour

  • They played this at Knebworth Park in 1978

  • @Goldengirl3896

They did Ripples live in 1978 and 1980. Those versions blow this away, and are not edited like this one.

  • @yesshows100 I've heard the studio version of Ripples and the 1978, 1980 and 2007 live versions - and I can NOT tell any difference - as far as I'm concerned, there are no edits.

  • @SPeacock

Are you kidding. Listen again! The 2007 version has on a small portion of the instumental part, then they end it where the 2nd part is suppose to begin. Many people have noticed this. There are posts all over youtube. The best part is missing. Plus the 1978 & 1980 version have way more power. Instruments and voice. That's why the 2007 versions are 8 minutes instead of around 10 minutes. The studio version is in a class by itself!

  • @SPeacock

Time them. The middle section here is around 1 minute, 30 seconds. The version from 1978 is around 3 minutes!

  • @yesshows100 I've done what you've said... and you're right. (to the band) You FOOLS!!

  • @SPeacock

I listen to Genesis more than anyone, and it took me 2 listenings to realize what they did. Thinking they were going to do Duke's Travel's / Duke's End I have friends that were going to fly to NY from Fla. to see the show at MSG. They cancelled the trip when they heard this, and that Duke's End was at the beginning of the show and Duke's Travels was only the last 2 minutes in the medley with the vocal part cut out! When Phil is suppose start singing, it never happens!

  • @SPeacock

After they fade out of Duke's Travels, they do a crummy version of Afterglow!

  • I can't hear any kind of typical stadium reverb. That's why the sound is not so deep and fascinating as the cd.

  • The guy who posted it here mixed the 5.1 sound of this broadcast without the rear speakers. That's why it is sounding so soundboard.

  • Truly a great song, everything seemed to slow down when they did this in concert.

I went from being part of the show to observing it as a whole in the 4th row.

  • Darryl's guitar solo on this track is unbelievable; gives me goosebumps every time.

  • This takes me back to September 07 when Genesis played in Toronto when I was in attendance. I cannot wait for the release of the concert recorded in Rome that will be released in North America next month.

  • I love this video!

Very high quality, Phil sing very good here

  • Oh what a beautiful song! I heard it standing in pouring rain in Chorzów in Poland and almost cried! It was an amazing experience!

  • Sounds great, but he does sound like he's struggling....is it true they're dumping this song for Hold on My Heart? I think that would be b/c it's easier for him to sing (notes not as high)....someone correct me if I'm wrong, but that's what I heard....

  • No, but Hold on My Heart was part of the set. You're right though, about the notes being a bit too high for him, but I think he got more comfortable with the song as the tour went on. Remember, this was pretty early in the tour...

  • The version on the CD is pretty good.

  • I am still amazed they played this song. Wish I could have seen it.

  • Absolutly the best song on the tour!

  • superb

  • wow i went to see them in toronto, love these guys.

  • saw it live a few times this year.....

    I love bluegirls

  • Beautiful, beautiful..... I love Genesis

  • I can't thank you enough for posting this. I cried!!

  • so beautiful!

  • BEAUTIFUL

  • This is perfect!

  • NICE VID

  • Wonderful...
