If i'm correct, recede means to go away, before a tsunami hits, water on the shore of where it will hit can recede back to the Ocean. This may only occur with tsunami's cause by landslide though

The sudden shift of the plate cause a huge displacement of water which went upward from the bottom of the sea, then outward in all directions at amazing speeds. When the tsunami gets into shallower waters, the wave builds up, but it slows down.

@IWxCamperxIW Have you ever seen how the water at a beach recedes after every wave? It's pretty much before every wave because that's the water gaining strength to form a wave. The more water that recedes, the bigger the wave. So in a tidal wave or a tsunami, a ton of water recedes back into the ocean. Typically, in that situation, you want to go as far out to sea as you can, which will make the tsunami a lot less dangerous, as it is only beginning to climb to full strength.

That's, maybe, the reason they show focus on water. But NOT ALWAYS waters recede. There are positive waves (sea levels increase and 'travel' through the land) and negative waves (sea recedes).
