  • anydoodles: Andersen M studio did both, so they are similar for a good reason. Pottermore came second. Fantastic job – this one more creative/expressive by some way.

  • La barra de "no me gusta" es como el viento, sabemos que está, pero no lo vemos :)

  • Una muy buena animacion con una muy interesante historia!

  • Hey I wonder if they did the animation for Pottermore too?

  • Bought the book. It didn't do that. Disappointed. Returning tomorrow.

  • @7sonfilms Haha.

  • well that's just amazing animaiotn and lovley narrative. that must of taekn ages. i'd love to try something like it.

  • This has to be one of the most awesome things I've seen all day.

  • Brilliantly Done!

  • I instantly thought of this video when I saw the new "Pottermore" announcement video J.K. Rowling put out... so similar.

  • @anydoodles my thoughts exactly

  • @anydoodles i thought of this video too, when i saw the pottermore announcement. :-)

  • this is cool looking, defn, but why do i time out attention-wise in 30 seconds?

and the impression one had was of worming into Auckland. It went up inclines and through cuttings, and you saw a grey fringe of cemetery overlapping

  • After writing a couple of times to the NZ Book Council, my co-author, Fernanda Rigoni, finally obtained the correct transcript of the video. Thank you unlooney for the effort. Here it is:

    "By train, from Loomis Station, the track ran straight for several miles, with straggly town on one side. Ah Lap's grocery where you could by Chinese ginger in jars;

  • Great video, but I think that less should have been more, when it comes to the voice over. The visuals are engaging enough; they should have just let that do the talking.

  • Amazing stuff. I can't even imagine how long it took to complete it

  • [Pt 1 — explanation:]

Below is the roughly transcribed text from the vid— sadly I haven't read Going West (and can't easily get it as I'm not in NZ any more) but as I spent several years in Auckland had a go.

A few things — Eden Park's big match is probably for rugby, ALARP is an acronym, Auckland Grammar is the school, shelia=girl, Ranui is the westward train route. A few bits I couldn't catch (hence the question marks). Also, the old station is now closed (the new Britomart is a lot closer).

  • [Pt 2 — start of the quote:]

"By train, from Rumer(?) Station, the track ran straight for several miles, with straggly town on one side. An ALARPs grocery where you could by chinese ginger and jars; the Scout Hall, the Anglican Church; The Jam Factory; and vineyards and farms on the other.

  • [Pt 3:]

Then the line began to curve and the impression one had was of worming into Auckland. It went up hill vines and through cuttings, and through a brave fringe of cemetary, overlapping the hill and the lumpy ranges of the side. Once across the spindly bridge there was no cleaving — stab like a knife.

  • [Pt 4:]

Avondale, Mount Albert; houses tumbling one against the other, iron roofs and a frayed quilt of reds and green, and Morningside, Kingsland, with Eden Park mown like a lawn waiting for the big match Saturday. Then the prison — an English castle with a quarry where the prisoners broke stones. And Auckland Grammar standing above, its code(?) like Kahn buildings in the sun and boys in laggy blue kicking footballs high. Now, what happened when a football went into the quarry?

  • [Pt 5:]

At Auckland Station the reps make to Ranui echoing big roar threatened you, you felt you might journey up or down instead of along by slanting, sliding ways or by the plucking of the hand and hear a big final voice. The dusty straggling walk along to Queen Street ended that. "

  • This is amazing! Love it :)

  • must have cost a fortune doing all those punch cuts. . .

  • Could you write subtitles down? I didn't understand every word he said, but what I understood was amazing!

    good job!

  • Amazing

  • Amazing stop motion video. Well done!

  • awsome animation!

  • wow wow wow!

  • wonderful!

  • Amazing video

  • This is great. Very good job!

  • That's pretty wild. I think I might want to check out that book.

  • This is incredible.. I wish I knew where the narrative text was from...

  • @krystalynn03 the book is Going West by Maurice Gee

  • Thank you, there's still genius somewhere out there.

  • Forget the audio. Turn the sound off and wacth...its amazing.

  • Higher quality in vimeo for those looking for. Just search for "Going West". Stunning!

  • that was brilliant. does anyone know of any other videos like this?

  • Stunning!! :-)

  • WOW, I am speachless.... never seen anything like that. Wonderful!!!

For those like me wich English is a second language is very hard to understand. Any posibilities for subtitels or just tipe the text in "More info". ???

  • My only question is, is the book as creepy as the video??

  • Creepy....

  • This video made me zone out big time, I don't know wtf happened.

  • I get lost trying to follow the voice but it is visually astounding! I have tried to do simple animation, both stop motion and digital and I can assure you that this involved a ridiculous amount of work and patience.

  • Wonderful!

  • shit! i literally havent stopped listening to this for an hour! im really kind of freaked out with how addicting the dark "feel" and emotions of this video are.

  • thats what i thought

  • sounds like Mark Strong.. you know the bad guy from Sherlock Holmes... Lord Henry Blackwood.

  • that's fuckedup... i can't hear the narrator(Y)

  • in the beginning it kinda sounds like a darked-voiced Heath Ledger?

  • Formidable !

  • Great job! The animation, lighting, and cutouts themselves are beautiful! Thanks for posting.

  • I wasn't too into the audio. If you didn't, listen to Tim Halperin's Where' I'm going acoustic. Sets the mood

  • Una maraviglia !

  • im tripping my skull off ! this vid is awsome !

  • Can somebody tell me everything the narrator was saying?

    it was so awesome!!!

  • isn't this neat

  • oh. my. gosh.

  • AWEESOME!

and it really looks like MARK STRONG's voice. I love that man. :)

  • This is fanTAStic!

  • Brilliant - what a great way to bring a book to life!

  • You don't need to hear what he is saying. His voice is just a soundtrack to convey the emotional aspect of the animation. The images tell the story. Have we lost so much of our creativity that we cannot piece together the story from the emotions? Do we really need every word pronounced for us? How sad we, as a species, are becoming.

  • @ockabillylv

    That's a bit melodramatic. Relax.

  • The Kiwis never stop surprising me. This video is so well done!

  • cuuul

  • oh wow! i love books, and all their potential uses..

  • Perfect !

  • this is AWESOME!!!!

  • I am in love with this!

  • This is badly let down by the person reading the story. It'd hard to understand and misses the point - which is to tell a story here! Such a shame because the animation is beautiful

  • I agree with swebnived, its a form of art not story telling time. This is very cool and effective. I would go and read the book for the narrative which is what the campaign is probably suggesting for us to do! :)

  • Comment removed

  • I cannot work out how to added the text here as it is longer than the number of allowed characters. Any ideas for sharing the narrative?

  • That's incredible! would someone, preferable with access to the book, please, Please, PLEASE, give subtitles!?!

  • wow wow wow

  • just great, wish it was longer:)

  • A bit hard to understand. And it's a pity because the visuals, the voice tone and pitch and the general sense of the presentation are just excellent! It's very imnportant though, to care the diction! Could you edit it?

  • thank you

  • Wow.. Thats all I can manage to say

  • So much creativity and talent together! Could someone please make a transcription of it? Thank you very much!

  • uufffff....

  • awesome work! awesome tons of work btw.

  • Books forever.

  • narration sounded like he was enchanting a ritual of some sort. this is amazing!

  • Wow.

  • wow what amazing, did someone notice like a RE narration???

  • Good.

  • GREAT!

  • This is one of the best pieces of advertising i have ever seen-- Hitchock-esque. I wasn't even paying attention to the audio, and I still want to read the book! THAT is good advertising!!!

  • Beautiful! Truly captures the feeling of being so caught up in the story that you feel as though you are IN the book!

  • WOW!!!!! Totally great animation. Great book trailer.

  • I love the narrator's voice.

  • Beautifull animation. Original. Looks so professional. Only I don't like the audio. It's way to scary, to heavy for the pictures whom are so fine, so delicat. The sounds keep me from placing this film on my Favorite-list. I'm sorry. But again I have to say: Bravo, for very well performed animation.

  • The book "You Have A College Degree, Now What?" was just released and there is no discussion on it. What gives?

  • Where books come to life...

  • o_O

  • hehhm i really don't know why it's so hard to find some cool guys on you tube!

  • amazing! really unbelieveble!

  • FYI: Just because it's a commercial for NZ Book Council doesn't mean they made it.

    Props to Maurice Gee.

  • WOW awsome the voice remebers lord blackwood from sherlock holmes really impressive!

  • Well done New Zealand.

    A pox to e-readers.

  • Congratulations NZ Book Council. This is truly fantastic!

  • this should have 1million++ views - WOW

  • OMG! AMAZING

  • If advertising does not cross your retina and your eardrums it's useless.

Very good taste in a clear, direct and emotional communication.

    Regards from Mexico

  • jizz!

  • I really like this video.

My only issue is the audio gets to garbled and the narrative becomes too hard to hear.

  • @BudoMedia with something this thought out, I wouldn't be surprised if the editor meant to do that.

  • @BudoMedia yes, but i think that was done on purpose, you're meant to really get sucked into the visual and the voice becomes sort of like background noise.

  • @BudoMedia - I guess you'll just have to to read Maurice's book then hey? It's a good one, you won't be disappointed. He gives incredibly detailed descriptions of Auckland in several of his books.

  • It becomes a whole new world and completely absorbs you..

  • Thiz is nice

  • Wow, impressive... amazing!

  • Amazing!!

  • I love this.

  • That is incredible!!!
