The biggest problem with the audience clapping is that now they're dictating the tempo of the song, and makes it that much harder for a musician to keep the proper tempo while playing. You can literally hear it slow down in comparison to the original arrangement from Rod Miller w/Alan Thompson
I wish the audience wouldn't clap. Really. It may be nice, but it spoils the experience for those trying to listen out to the nuances of the arrangement.
Gershwin's kinda the intermediary between ragtime and big band. You may be able to find his stuff under both titles. I'm really not sure what you'd call it in itself, though.
