In vocal jazz, scat singing is vocal improvisation with wordless vocables, nonsense syllables or without words at all. Scat singing gives singers the ability to sing improvised melodies and rhythms, to create the equivalent of an instrumental solo using their voice. Though scat singing is improvised, the melodic lines are often variations on scale and arpeggio fragments, stock patterns and riffs, as is the case with instrumental improvisers.
What!?!?!! You don't write a scat solo. It's called improv! You can learn the chord progression, and plan some things that you'd like to do, but scat singing is improv, and if you write out your solo, and do it the same everytime, YOU are a shitty performer.
@rayah346 "scatting" is improvisation. So you can learn how to scat, but you can't learn a scat solo. And I performed this song, and the scat section is blocked out, stating a scat solo goes there, but notes and ryhthms are not written in. Thats what I mean by you can't learn a scat solo. The other parts are written with the doo's and ba's and stuff so that isn't technically scatting, its controlled vocal nonsense.
Continue to argue semantics. Nonsense syllables attached to notes=scat. It doesn't matter if it's improvisation or written in, it's still scat.
Though, scat solo's are learned as well, I'd suppose. If your plan is to improvise the solo the moment of performance, you're a shitty performer. Seriously, you practice and "write" a scat solo in your head, and perform that, not something new every time.
This is my absolute favourite song. And the singing is beautiful. If I could change the percussion a little I think I would, but that is what is so wonderful about jazz. It is so versatile.
My choir is singing this right now and i have one of the scat solos :)

@ bootsketcher, you can't learn a skat solo. You just improvise.

@brdwaydreamr Actually, the scat solo in this is written in. So yes, you do learn it.
It's also totally awesome clashing 6 part harmony at one point. The Sop 2 line made me want to die inside.
Loved singing this.

We are doing this song also. So much fun. Especially learning a skat solo. Great job by the way soloists.
