Mike Henry is my favorite Tarzan. He was a friend of my parents' (my dad was a tv producer and my mom an actress) and Mike came over to the house and threw the football with me. This was all after I watched him as Tarzan...it was a thrill then!
Mike Henry is simply one of the greatest Tarzans' ever on film! In an interview he says that of the 3 Tarzan movies he filmed,"Tarzan & the Jungle Boy" was his favorite.
Mike was always a bit too educated for me until i actually read the Edgar Rice Burroughs story. Tarzan was VERY educated and spoke not only English but French as well. Greystoke: The Legend of Tarzan was more accurate to the books by Burroughs.
I always like Mike Henry as Tarzan....You gotta love this film clip. When the helicopter lands it goes behind the bushes, hidden....Then a quick choppy edit....Then the explosion....I guess the budget on this movie was running low....Still very enjoyable.
Little known trivia...Mike Henry screen-tested for the TV show "Batman." Can you imagine how humiliating it would've been to get beaten out by Adam West?

@ysbaddaden2003 In a strange way, Mike Henry actually DID play George of the Jungle. After leaving the role of Tarzan, he made a comedy TV pilot called "Taygar, King of the Jungle" in which he was a "dolt" and his mate wore the pants in the family. But he was sued by the Burroughs estate and the pilot was never seen.
I have Tarzan of the Movies by Gabe Essoe, and he mentioned that show, but my impression was the Burrough's estate stopped them before any episode aired.
Which was odd since the jungle-man, from Bomba and others, and a whole slew of hottie jungle babes were proliferating without interferrance from them.
I made the joke under the assumption very few would know about the show.
Mike did make a mighty fine Lt Col. Donald Penobscot on one episode of MASH.
@2008ljr -- Yes, you're right. Mike Henry was hysterical as Junior opposite the Great One, Jackie Gleason. Burt Reynolds was a true fan and friend of Mr. Henry.(who also appeared in Reynolds' "The Longest Yard" as a football playing prison guard)
Splendid Tarzan. He became a much better actor later, in films with Charlton Heston. His acting in the Tarzan films was described as lacking motivation and confidence. It was his first acting so what would one expect?
Mike Henry was up to play Batman in a 1965 movie, but he was still held to the Tarzan contract, although he was suing to be released due to injuries sustained.
I always wondered if that's why the TV show Batcave looked like a NASA space launch, it was created for a more serious movie adaption.
@ysbaddaden2003 are his injuries the reason the studio never made him the television Tarzan? He has far greater physical attrributes than Ron Ely for sure
@ronwelker8 Yes, he was injured constantly and wanted a break before the series started. But the producer decided to try and squeeze one more film in before the series started shooting, which wore Mr. Henry out even more when he really needed rest. I spoke to the stunt coordinator of these films recently and he said that Mike Henry was one of the nicest people he'd ever worked with but trained too hard in the tropical weather, thus burning himself out.
@Zacatown thanks so very much..............this is really important information and explains a lot...................................i'm sorry that Mike Henry didn't become a bigger star than sylvester stallone but now i know partly why it didn't happen -- he certainly had the square jaw and the physical attributes and the voice..........great that you even were able to talk to the stunt coordinator of these tarzan films recently.thanks again.
He was slated to be the TV Tarzan. But there were lawsuits with charges and counter-charges as to the working conditions. Henry at one point claimed a chimp bit him and I saw a picture in Tarzan of the movies of him with a bleeding chin.
According to the same source, ron Ely did his own stunts and in just a couple of years sustained 14 different injuries. But with no Jane nor Boy (Korak), high budgets, delays, and coming on opposite The Green Hornet didn't help.
@ysbaddaden2003 it is ridiculous what the television studios expected of their star tarzan....................cheetah's bite to mike h enry's face was serious and from the superficial poiint of view could have resulted in a serious scar for henry and a face that was no longer perfect for virile acting roles....impressive that ron ely did all his own stunts but he had a pretty boy face and no where the muscles or the virile square jaw of mike henry for acting work
@ronwelker8 Mike was offered the role of Tarzan for the 1966 TV show, but he turned it down according to an interview I'm reading with Mike in Filmfax Magazine. The producers of the 3 Tarzan movies had not treated Mike well, resulting in lawsuits which were eventually settled out of court. Also,Mike was concerned about being typecast as the Tarzan character at that time.He wanted to broaden his acting career & desired doing roles with more variety.
@ysbaddaden2003 Mike Henry refutes this rumor in a current interview. He says that he was never in discussions with the producers of the 1966 Batman TV series at all.He never did any screen tests either for this project.
This was a clip from the 1966 action-adventure Tarzan flick called "Tarzan And The Valley Of Gold",which was produced by Sy Weintraub and released by American International Pictures. This was the debut of Mike Henry as Tarzan. Henry would go on to make two more Tarzan adventure films until it quit the series in 1968. Mike Henry played him in the movies while Ron Ely played the Ape Man on television.
I agree, Gordon Scott, Jock Mahoney, and the fantastic Mike Henry, out Rambo, Rambo, if anyhting Rambo was a ultra violent, non heroic version of these films.
Thanks to the one who posted this, it's great to see a non steriod film hero, and I saw Henry on I Got A Seceret when I was about nine. Henry was my reason for taking up fitness that many years ago and I stuck with it, I hope he knows he was and is a great inspiration.

I always thought Mike Henry would've made an excellent Batman, who would probably avoid the comedy.
In fact, the whole TV show that followed with Adam West, looked more to me like a movie set, with the sheer expense involved getting the first Batmobile, a Batcave that looked like it was for a moon launch, the Bat-Copter, Bat-Boat and Bat-Motorcycle etc.
I looked everywhere on the internet, but Mike Henry's Tarzan movies r sadly nowhere 2 be found. i don't understand it either! If they can put that Wizard of Oz from the 30's on video cassette & DVD, they can surely put 3 movies from the late 60's on DVD & cassette! Its not hard!
Which role did he play in Scarface???? It`s one of my favorite movies, you gotta know!!^^ If I think it over now...perhaps the guy with the chainsaw???
Mike Henry would probably been in more Tarzans but he was bitten by cheetah (on the chin) and sued the studio. His career never quite recovered. I think they markedhim as a trouble maker.
Mike: In the resurrection our body will be brilliant like the sun (Mt. 13:43); perfect male(Ef. 4:13); beautiful (Psl. 45:2); can travel at the light speed (Mt. 27:52); will cross the matter, walls and doors (Jn. 20:19); will can fly like Enoch (Gn.5:24) and Jesus (Acts 1:9) and the 2 last witnesses (Rev. 11:12), same at the resuscitated Christ´s body (1 Jn. 3:2); and many, many more, read your Bible.
Your comment to "Tarzan - Mike Henry" is four months old now!! As it is mine! I didn´t read yours somehow (perhaps it was a little later..don`t know. Or I didn`t recognize it that time - sorry for that!!!) Fact is, that I remember Mr. Padilla from my childhood. I liked "Jai" when I was a kid. He reminded me of "Mowgli". Sad to hear about his death - but he didn`t become very old, didn`t he?? What happened to him??? I was born in 1971!!
Mike Henry was one of the most muscular and, in my opinion, best of the Tarzans. This movie (Tarzan and the Valley of Gold) was almost like a James Bond adventure and Henry was visually and character wise a superb Tarzan.
I kept on waiting for Tarzan to say, "Daddy, can we move to Florida. I like all the alligators and snakes." Oh, wrong movie.
