there's not a great deal of difference between the cod 2 and cod 4 engines, visually. sure, the newer games look slightly better with modern tweaks... but it's basically the same thing. the main thing that's different is movement, cod 2 is much more arcade-y, like doom or something. cod 4 is slowed down and feels like walking through a swamp in comparison.

The engine controls everything from graphics, sound, net code, system resources (memory etc..). The engine controls how things are displayed and what attributes are applied to these items. Whether it be vertex lighting on an object, or to apply GL settings.

CoD series uses Quake 3 engine, end of.

CoD 2 has better graphics, no not really, not even close. But was there Not much of an improvement from CoD2-CoD4, yes small difereneces. But from what I can tell, CoD4 has a lot more detail, small things lot's of grass, better destruction on buildings, better attention to player models, it's like it can handle a lot more on screen. But since all the CoD's are DX9 and use the old ass Quake 3 engine, that's not much of a surprise. I wonder what's going to happen to CoD when they can't use RAGE?

Just somthing about COD2,everything is to scale all the buildings etc (other COD's the buildings dont seem to scale & seem to short for your character) they seem to be the correct height in COD2,also better lighting effects,textures,better flame effects.

Only thing is the characters are bland but acceptable,if COD2 had more detail on the characters and bigger variety of characters it would be the best hands down.

CoD4 engine is superior to CoD2's one, but CoD2 feels more "complete" because the ambient is excellent and more epic.

CoD2 was made when Infinity Ward ACTUALLY CARED about QUALITY, making good, fun games for everyone, PC and console gamers alike.

Now they just want to milk the franchise and make more money, giving us crappy console-to-PC conversions and rushed games, focusing almost on buggy multiplayer. (Modern Warfare 2 being the most glaring example of this).

I think CoD2 uses some Quake engine, but the graphics are almost identical to those on CoD4, except for some lightin' effects, some work on the textures and, of course (wich is VERY important) the animations.

I'm impressed with Treyarch's work though. There are certain parts in CoD5 that remind me of UE3. WaW had some VERY impressive visuals going on, especially for Quake 3.5.

When MW2 came out the graphics were...far less than I expected.It was a massive step down, especially since WaW.
