To clarify my comment: What we do not have as far as the Federal Government is concerned is a direct democracy. We have a representative democracy -- elected officials represent the people in Congress and the White House. The people do not rule our country directly. We do however, have some direct democracy at the state level in those states that allow citizens to draw up and vote on referendums and initiatives.

Yes, the United States is a republic because we do not have a hereditary monarch. The United States is also a democracy ... a representative democracy to be exact. That means that the citizens of the country are represented in the government by elected officials. Look up the words "republic" and "democracy" and find out what they mean for yourself.
