Yes, Gerard Butler gives this song a more 'masculie' touch. Yet, I personally like this interpretation better, because I see the Phantom as someone, who is a genius on one hand, but someone who has been deeply hurt and has a fragile psyche. So making him sound too strong draws a different picture.

I don't mean to offend Mr. Butler. He's also a great artist! It's just a personal preference!
