I was watching some of Carson's work when he was doing a show in the 50s, (pre-Ed) and I realize what Ed has added. Carson was a smooth personality, but he needed someone to "goad" him just a little bit -- someone to "bring him out" a bit -- and Carson would not likely have been a success on "Tonight" without Ed's help.
The Tonight Show started doing same-day taping during Jack Paar's tenure. Johnny always did the show "live on tape".
