When Karen (the actress) is skating through the Hospital it is obvious she is wearing padding to her legs and Body. I don't mean to sound like I'm putting the Movie down or anything, but that padding would have to eventually come off to reveal a thin Actress who looked like she was losing weight!
I saw this movie when it premiered in 1989. Through the years, I've learned more about the Carpenters. This movie is the "fairy tale" version of Karen's life, especially since Richard Carpenter was the executive producer. Their mother, Agnes, was a racist and controlling asshole, who never loved Karen and made her feel that Richard was important. This most likely lead to Karen's anorexic health problems. Read "Little Girl Blue - The Life of Karen Carpenter" if you want to know the real story.
@georginacronin The "chubby" article is not real. There was no article that called KAREN chubby, but there was one early on in their career that called RICHARD chubby
I agree with the previous comment... Richard is such an awesome brother. Very rare. Remind me of my own brother... always looking after the sis and family. ^_^
@LadyBludgeon On the contrary...Richard was the OPPOSITE. He let his mother continue to treat his sister as second class behind him. In Agnes Carpenter's eyes, Richard was the only talented one, that Karen wouldn't have a career without him, when in reality, the opposite is the truth, HE needed HER.
One of the greatest losses in musical history. An instantly recognizable, one of a kind voice, silenced far to soon while shedding light on an up to then, far too closeted illness/disorder. Her final album is a heartbreaking platinum treasure. Her life is a cautionary tale for folks who assume successful lives of talented people are problem free. God rest her immortal soul. Forever grateful for ALL you gave us!
I've been a fan of the Carpenters all of my life and this stands as one of the most tragic events I can remember or even experience. I have this movie in it's entire lenght . It is one of my most
tresured posessions along with the book, Littlev Girl Blue The story of Karen Carpenter. Karen, We love
always and have a special Place in our hearts The Superbird 43
I am not a fan of the Carpenters' music, but I always thought that Karen Carpenter had an absolutely beautiful singing voice. Her untimely death was a tragic loss.
@collegeman1988 The Carpenters' music tends toward the cheesy side, I admit. But the first time I heard Karen Carpenter's voice, I thought, "Wow. Her voice is like black velvet: smooth, with a tinge of sadness. Best voice I've heard."
This movie is bullshit! The screenwriter had to revise the script 5 times because Richard was angry about how Agnes was being depicted. Even the actors in the movie were creeped out because they had to wear the clothing, drive the cars, film in the home that the real CArpenters used. The fact they even used the actual medics&medic van in the film is eerily freaky! That was one strange family.
@yellowrose32 i remember they used to play it on regular television might have to search through lifetime movies or something like that. I can't remember what channel it came on.
Still remembering her after all these years. It's been 28 years ago today since she passed away. It really doesn't seem that long ago. She will never be forgotten!
I know Richard Carpenter has disowned this film--& I know Critics panned it mercilessly--I loved it, & I thought Cynthia Gibb was incredible. Mitchell Anderson had a tough role, & he did it well--Cynthia was perfect, & haunting. I was such a Carpenters Fan, & so heartbroken when she left us--far too soon. This Film was a noble effort--critics be damned! Wolfsky9, 64 y/o
When they asked Louise Fletcher (played Agnes Carpenter) what it was like filming, she said it was eery as they used Karen Carpenter's actual clothes, filmed on location in the house, and used the same paramedics and ambulance that had transported Karen Carpenter to the hospital the day she died.
The best compliment I have ever received was when my singing coach told me I sometimes sound like Karen Carpenter. Karen Carpenter was fantastic (and I don't really believe my singing coach), why did she have to die:,(
The beginning of this was a bit bizarre with the younger Karen on skates next to her older self dying on a hospital guerney. It made for an...interesting transition.
NOT Even Close to the real lives of the Carpenters. This movie is a discrace to the Carpenters name. The Cast is so far from Karen & Richard & the Parents its not funny.
Wow. This movie makes me cry every time. I am also suffering from anorexia nervosa, though I am in "remission" right now because I just had a very hard pregnancy and birth not too long ago. Eating is still hard. :(
@DannyPhantom3599 Thank you. Since I am getting further and further away from the birth (almost 6 months now) and breastfeeding is slowing down (though I would like to continue into the 2nd year), I find myself getting excited that I can finally take diet pills again and start losing some serious weight. I am actually obese right now by the BMI standards, and that distresses me. :( I really don't want to go back to that place...that cold place called anorexia. :(
The actress that plays Karen Carpenter in this movie looks too healthy. The real Karen Carpenter was very sickly looking. I do think they did a good job casting.
Louise Fletcher always plays this ice cold Stepford Wife cobra character. From Nurse Ratched to a recurring part on Star Trek Deep Space NIne. Chilling.
They did find her in the nude. There are many things about this movie that are fictionalized, I guess to make the movie more entertaining. They didn't automatically move to a house in California either. For almost all of the the first year they lived there, they stayed in an apartment until their house in Connecticut was finally sold.
@carmenmsmith91 a singer from the 70's from the group the carpenter who sung such hits as mr. postman and top of the world. she dies of anorexia in the 80's when she was 32
I remember watching this movie waaaay back when it first aired when I was a little kid...must have been a long time ago. In which year did this movie first air?
It seems to me like Richard didn't help much with her worrying about her weight when he took her food and told her that she didn't want to get fat later in life.
the part where "the ghost of her past" was roller-skating past her in the aisle of the hospital was blood-chilling. For a moment, I actually thought that it was a horror movie. Felt really spooky...
Oh Karen was so fun. So careless about problems and just goes out and has fun. She was kinda like me. Well, that's just sad knowing she's d%*d. She does in the movie what I'd be doing if I were 13.
DAMN, she could sing! It's always wild to me that some people with so much talent have such little self-confidence. If I had that voice, I wouldn't have given a damn if somebody thought I was fat or not. They probably were just mad that they didn't have her voice!
As an EMT, I noticed a glaring medical inaccuracy at the beginning. They show the EMTs putting an oxygen mask on her face and then immediately starting CPR. An oxygen mask only works if a patient is breathing, and if she'd been breathing, they would not be doing CPR! In real life, they would have been doing mouth to mouth or using a BVM, not using a simple oxygen mask!
The opening makes me cry, and this song is perfect. I used to listen to "Rainy Days and Mondays" when I was having a bad day; the lyrics are so beautiful. If only someone had told Karen she was beautiful....

que mala onda mi ingles no es tan bueno y se me escapan algunas palabras alguien sabe si la puedo encontrar con subtitulos en alguna parte? gracias...
@kelli010987 - Being 145 lbs. really depends on how much muscle s/he has, how tall s/he is, and what their body-frame size is. Most teenagers are a little bit "thicker" because a.) they're growing, and tend to eat, eat, and eat some more, and b.) they usally are more active: biking, running, gym class, other sports, etc., and, again muscle weighs more than fat.
I weighed less in high school than I do know, but I wear a smaller size now that I'm bigger ... Strange, isn't it?
Actually the real Karen Carpenter in her teens WAS heavy. She was 145 lbs on her 5 ft 4 inch frame. SO she went on the famed Stillman water diet. And lost 25 lbs. And she was at her regular weight of 120 lbs until 1974 when she started to lose weight and then got down to the size 0 of 77 lbs.
The start of the movie creeps me out as we see her LIFELESS... I want to remember her as the incredible singer that she was... Whomever called her "Chubby.." I would strangle the life out of them... RIP Karen... I love you....
@harrisonfanalways Lots of women are called Chubby or Fatty and don't go anorexic, the vast majority in fact, your idiotic comment is the highest rated, why am I not surprised?
@locheelad2 Screw you... I was harrisonfanalways... she had an emotional disorder and words like that can hurt... Check out the book "Little Girl Blue." I suggest that you read it... I get the feeling that their parents wanted Rich to be the star and not Karen... Check out that book and make your own decisions... I think that family and public image had something to do with it.....
@harrisonfanalways According to Wikipedia's entry for The Karen Carpenter Story, in "Factual Inaccuracies" it says:
Karen is shown reacting to a Billboard Magazine article that describes her as "chubby". No such article was ever written about Karen. However, there was an article that claimed Richard to be "chubby."
@harrisonfanalways It was an article in Rolling Stone magazine that described her as "the chubby sister".....she was never the same after that article. Hell is not hot enough for that so-called journalist. I do not know the name of him/her.
@whatanightmare1 yes! I've always remembered Rolling Stone magazine's comment...... it was the beginning of the end from then onward.. I've always maintained that Rolling Stone should never have described her as 'the chubby sister'....as she did'nt accept that too well......
i think it would actually surprise you on how many teenagers have heard karen carpenter and even grew up with her music, im 22 now but i grew up with her music, the only problem is i think this film can actually make teenagers want to lose weight cus i went thru a period of trying to when i first watched this.
im 17, and just from hearing about karen carpenters story when i was younger i actually was anorexic for a while, but i got through it.... its sad how karen never did =( well she did but it was too late =(
Not sure about anybody else, but when I was in marching band during high school, we NEVER practiced in our uniforms.. We made sure to keep them "clean" so they wouldn't get too stinky between washings lol..
"in 10 or 20 years mom and dad are going to let you date, you dont wanna get fat do you?" LOL

i love Todd Haynes work.
RainbowColin 2 years ago
This isn't his work. Todd Haynes created Superstar: The Karen Carpenter story. This version is the one that Richard Carpenter himself helped create.

sorry say 145Ibs is heavy!
kelli010987 2 years ago
@kelli010987 - Being 145 lbs. really depends on how much muscle s/he has, how tall s/he is, and what their body-frame size is. Most teenagers are a little bit "thicker" because a.) they're growing, and tend to eat, eat, and eat some more, and b.) they usally are more active: biking, running, gym class, other sports, etc., and, again muscle weighs more than fat.
I weighed less in high school than I do know, but I wear a smaller size now that I'm bigger ... Strange, isn't it?

people like you who say 149Ibs is really fat make teens want to diet! its no wonder people get anorexic!

best female voice of the 70's

Actually the real Karen Carpenter in her teens WAS heavy. She was 145 lbs on her 5 ft 4 inch frame. SO she went on the famed Stillman water diet. And lost 25 lbs. And she was at her regular weight of 120 lbs until 1974 when she started to lose weight and then got down to the size 0 of 77 lbs.
cd72 2 years ago
That's not so heavy. I was 5'5" and 149lbs in my teens, so pretty much the same. Okay, I wasn't thin, but was still considered healthy.
zeldaofarel 2 years ago
That's nothing! When I was 13 I was 5'3 and 170 but I lost it all :)

I vivadly remember when this Tv movie first came out. It not only show cases the dangers on ED and Cynthia Gibb is so amazing in this movie.
lmk1979 2 years ago
Cynthia Gibb was masterful as Karen. And, while watching this biopic, I was close to tears the entire time. Wolfsky9

I remember when my mom told me about her. I still don't know why, but it creeped the hell out of me and it took me forever to forget about it..

Same thing happened to me too!

The start of the movie creeps me out as we see her LIFELESS... I want to remember her as the incredible singer that she was... Whomever called her "Chubby.." I would strangle the life out of them... RIP Karen... I love you....
harrisonfanalways 2 years ago 37
@harrisonfanalways Lots of women are called Chubby or Fatty and don't go anorexic, the vast majority in fact, your idiotic comment is the highest rated, why am I not surprised?
locheelad2 1 year ago
@locheelad2 Screw you... I was harrisonfanalways... she had an emotional disorder and words like that can hurt... Check out the book "Little Girl Blue." I suggest that you read it... I get the feeling that their parents wanted Rich to be the star and not Karen... Check out that book and make your own decisions... I think that family and public image had something to do with it.....
williamkatt81 1 year ago
@harrisonfanalways According to Wikipedia's entry for The Karen Carpenter Story, in "Factual Inaccuracies" it says:
Karen is shown reacting to a Billboard Magazine article that describes her as "chubby". No such article was ever written about Karen. However, there was an article that claimed Richard to be "chubby."

@harrisonfanalways "Chubby?!... hmmmm"
6000mphx 1 year ago
@harrisonfanalways It was an article in Rolling Stone magazine that described her as "the chubby sister".....she was never the same after that article. Hell is not hot enough for that so-called journalist. I do not know the name of him/her.
whatanightmare1 1 year ago
@whatanightmare1 yes! I've always remembered Rolling Stone magazine's comment...... it was the beginning of the end from then onward.. I've always maintained that Rolling Stone should never have described her as 'the chubby sister'....as she did'nt accept that too well......
cousiwa09 1 year ago
@whatanightmare1 There was no "chubby sister" article there. Rolling Stone called Richard "chubby."

i think it would actually surprise you on how many teenagers have heard karen carpenter and even grew up with her music, im 22 now but i grew up with her music, the only problem is i think this film can actually make teenagers want to lose weight cus i went thru a period of trying to when i first watched this.
kelli010987 2 years ago
im 17, and just from hearing about karen carpenters story when i was younger i actually was anorexic for a while, but i got through it.... its sad how karen never did =( well she did but it was too late =(

haha we could only wear our uniforms on game day and to be sure the school kept them and we had to get changed in the locker room!
chefjoeyrof 2 years ago
Not sure about anybody else, but when I was in marching band during high school, we NEVER practiced in our uniforms.. We made sure to keep them "clean" so they wouldn't get too stinky between washings lol..
