this is my favorite poem and luckily because i am greek i can read the original one...your translation is really good!it's true that it is adapted to the english language but i guess that's something that you can't avoid when you translate poetry!

As I say elsewhere, I don't speak much Greek (and what little I have is ancient!) I use other people's translations to produce what I hope are original English poems. I am a poet not a translator and attempt to make good poems first and foremost. Thanks for your comments - I hope you will enjoy the other Cavafy poems I have 'treated'!

Interesting translation - much more modern than other versions I've heard. I'd like to hear you reading the more traditional translations mentioning Cylops by name, etc.

Yes, I take your point. It's just that 'Laistrygonians' and 'Kyklopes' don't fit too well into English prosody! 'Giants' and 'one-eyed man' seemed preferable! There are a lot of people out there who are not too familiar with Greek mythology. One of my aims is not to distract the reader from Cavafy's main message.

Not really bad, but it is not exactly a translation, it is an adaptation. One or two subtleties from the original escape the translator.
