This is what I think happened: The LDS Church was founded when racism was prevalent in America (it still is, but that's a different story). Because religions tend to be conservative and dogmatic, the racist worldview held by most of America in the 19th century lingered within the Mormon bubble well past the civil rights movement. It's sad that it took until 1978 for Mormons to view black people as equals within their congregations...even worse that some Mormons still hold to those racist notions

What's really disturbing is the fact that I was in the LDS Church up until about 2007/8 and it was only by researching this topic that I discovered the truth.
I was just dumbfounded. It seemed to me that those Mormons who were in the know treat it like an elephant in the room and simply ignored it. Now there's the whole Prop 8 thing in the US. Even when in the church, I would never support a scheme that would deny rights to another person.

This is what I think happened: The LDS Church was founded when racism was prevalent in America (it still is, but that's a different story). Because religions tend to be conservative and dogmatic, the racist worldview held by most of America in the 19th century lingered within the Mormon bubble well past the civil rights movement. It's sad that it took until 1978 for Mormons to view black people as equals within their congregations...even worse that some Mormons still hold to those racist notions

racist?? I don't know of any doctrin or scripture with any racist contects. I am LDS and I apoligize if you think mormons are racists. I have friends in the church that are all different races, I am white and dating a black mormon girl. My ward alone has black, hispanic, asian, and some I don't know what race they are. We are not in any way a racist church, but like everyone we are imperfect and some members may think like this, but it is not the position of the church.

You are entitled to believe whatever you wish, but we are taught that everyone is equal weather black, white, red, LDS, Jew, Muslim, whatever. Maybe this was because of society, it was hard enough to be a black person in this world before this time, and it surely would have been harder to be a black "mormon"
The early saints were persecuted as bad or worse then any minority of the time, the Lord never does anything for no reason, but we are all imperfect.

As far as the journal of discorces, the churches position was much the same as that of society at the time. We have tried to put the wrong teaching of the past behind us, just like the catholics and the attrosities of their past. People have done many wrong things, and still do, but we must move past the hate, Jesus taught we need to forgive to be forgiven.
