Nice! I remember taking off from Leh in 2007. It felt like the plane would NEVER clear the mountains... Check out my videos from there - finally edited after 3 years :-S
I tried going overland by bike (Bullit500) on the dirt track called NH 21 many times, and only 4 was succesful either due to weather (often snowstorm in midsummer!) road condition and/or mecanical probs. Acclimatizing is a must and mandatory if you come direct from sealevel and isn't on suicide misson... still stupidity kills plp every year (it is, after all named the GREATER Himalayas) lethal stuff like pulmonal or cerebral oedema and coma [not to mention traffic, climbing and other accidents!
if u r goin for the first time der is no point goin by air...leh itself doesnt have much to see...its the road(leh-manali highway) which has the eternal beauty..only a fool wud go by air for the first tym..
The decent into leh airport is like being on a light aircraft in the grand canyon....one min you just see mountain and snow, the next just blue sky!! amazing but the people in leh made my trip....go ut the tourist season.
yes your so right.... but Jet left one hour earlier so IA was the only option (only seat was on business class 196$ (!) economy was full) ... i have flown JA from Leh down Delhi the year before and its for sure a better deal (newer fleet and better food) than IA. namaskar from copenhagen
@PunKrockers182 Ji: Not a military, but Air India Airbus 320 on a domestic leg from Delhi.... And yes commercial planes are allowed, as it is the only large airfield in these part of the greater himalayas at amazing11,000 feet, but photo is official forbidden.
Ace... was there in July 06, itsa an ace place acclimatised there at the start and went back at the end of the trip, is that jet airways by any chance?
great vid! i went there in aug 2004. i loved the place, one of my top 3 perhaps! the flight into leh is amazing, thru the himalayas, following the Indus river like a snake thru the mountains and then suddenly, green valleys with stark landscape around. its truly Shangri-la!

you'll definitely be better off flying with jet airways and the flight is a much better option than the drive up through the mountains

Sorry the late answer.....nope it's Indian Airlines. Jet Airways flew 1 hour earlier at
05.30! Tried that in '05 better service and newer planes...good company!

much better to take the bus... 2 day journey from manali. get acclimatised and see the mountains from arms length.
