One awesome plane. They can sneak up on you too. In a FTX @ Ft. Hood, was a mobility kill in our M1, sitting on the turret and my skin started crawling. Looked up and A-10 diving out of the sun. I could see his HUD. Wagged his wings for a kill. Didn't see or hear it coming. Flipped him off, laughed and gave up a wave. Real killer.

It's funny cause these people that are criticizing the A10 don't know anything about how the military works. you use a certain tool for a certain job, an A10 generally should never come in contact of ANYTHING but infantry and armor, which is what it is designed for, and does an amazing job of destroying.

@Soulrogue1994 The SU-25 is better than the A-10 because the SU-25 is supersonic. Where the A-10 is not. The faster you go, the easier it is to disturb the SAM missile. The Americans were building their planes based on safety in WWII and that's one of the reasons why they won the Pacific war. The Russians just did the same with the SU-25. Also, the SU-25 can perform on grass runways. In terms of performance the SU-25 is Equal to the F/A-18 Hornet and I know what I'm talking about.

I had a friend who graduated ROTC in '88, about the time the cold war was ending--an A6 navigator. He was nixed almost right away after only a few experiences in the cockpit. Sorry to say it but u'd better be prepared to have an alternate career in life.

It was getting shot down in kosovo because it wasn't being deployed properly. You don't send a10's to clear AAA. Just like you don't send tanks to clear out an aircraft carrier. Different tools for different jobs.
@Daytonaman675 First, larger gun on plane is not always better. Second due to size of gun and ammunitions it can carry less of ammunition. Third, vibration of firing is greater than on 20-23mm guns. That has effect of more spreading shoots - less precise. And FYI using aircraft to fire gun on ground target is most lethal action for aircraft if enemy have AAA due to level and straight flying.

@Santor6 I did not seen any airplane that can fly without a wing. Titanium bathtub or not. USAF tried to use A-10 in Kosovo and Serbia but after 3 or 4 downed they abandon idea. After a month they used mighty A-10 only to show-of for CNN.

Jak' is right, the "Warthog" or "hog" is just a nickname, as officially its the Thunderbolt II, with the Republic P-47 being the original "Thunderbolt" (which had the nickname of "Jug", for its resemblence to a milk jug). Kind of like the F-105 Thunderchief which had the nickname of "Thud" (which was a dark nickname referencing the sound the F-105 made slamming into the jungle floor of Vietnam after a SAM strike).

a sailor with turbines i have seen these planes in spangdahlem airbase as i was there with the german army to train with the roland aa system and the 30 mm canons are really big . the best was the g.i caught me while smoking some weed on watch at night and they took a few hits too
but it still carries AIM-9s its slow speed can be used to its advantage if in the hands of a skilled pilot...no curremt fighter would outturn the a-10,the slower then plane the tighter it turns and the A-10 is slow
You mean the SIdewinders I have read in many articles that superior version of the AIm-9 was better suited. due to its range less flexible. however aim-9 are a cheaper option As for A-10 having tighter turns it is impossible for plane to do it simply because it is too heavy to do it.
Its armour including the bath of titanuim cockpit (which can withstand 23mm direct hit), along side with its weapon armament makes the plane to be manovible.
furthermore: Another close -suppoort attack aircraft which is much more manouvible than its A-10 counterpart is the Harrier. Its Vtol ability makes able to stop at mid air able to turn much tighet turns. and its alot faster jet
However the downside compare to the A10 is that
1) Its not fuel efficent
2) easily can be shot down - AN A-10 can come home saftly with one engine, one of its wing blown off and its weapond malfuctioned
3) a-10 have a much lower IR compare to the Harrier.
@whitemanstand72 While I agree that The A-10 has no business in an Air-to-Air fight, ask the ground -pounders who they would prefer fly close air support. You'd be lucky if you heard F15 or F16 once in a hundred.
NATO claim 300 destroyed yugoslav army tanks... but at the end of a war it was 5 tanks destroyed, less than 3%... and yes, A-10 flew often during agression on Yugoslavia. Mostly on Kosovo.

It's very easy to check out. Yugoslavia/Serbia still have those tanks. There is no destroyed Yu tanks on kosovo after war except those 5-13... NATO admitted....
Sure, after the war. But during the war? I don't know what type of tanks A-10s destroyed but if NATO said they did and were lying they wouldn't admit it through admittance that none of the claimed targets had been destroyed. Hopefully they would be better liars than that.
I mean, right after retreat of Yugoslav forces form Kosovo, there were not destroyed tanks left except those 13. NATO destroyed 5 and 8 were destroyed by ground mines. Yugoslavia mainly uses M-84 and old T-55 tank...
The reason the A-10 didn't have many tank kills in Yugoslavia is because most of the tanks were immediatly hidden when NATO obtained air superiority. The A-10 did destroy several pieces of artillery but eventually there weren't many targets remaining. Everyone who could run away or hide did so. As far as Gulf war #1, the A-10 was responsible for 80% of all air to ground tank kills and even scored two air to air kills against enemy helicopters. I have worked on A-10's for 14 yrs.
It is also over valued by our adversaries. After the cold war was over, the former Soviet Union released documents which stated that the A-10 was the number one threat to their armor forces in the event of war with the US and that no tanks could be expected to advance succesfully without air support because of the A-10. They created this document in the early 1980's and specifically mentioned conflict on the European continent which is why so many A-10's were based in Germany at Spangalem AB.
The perfect weapon - it was never used. It acted as an effective deterrent and was never employed in its intended mission scenario (Soviet tanks overrunning northern Europe)... It was handy in a few others though...
You got me. I made the entire thing up. I have no knowledge of the A-10. The SU-25 is far superior in every way as a close support attack aircraft. The gun on the A-10 is no match for the gun on the SU-25. Please post more comments so the rest of us can learn from your 24 years of experience in military aviation.
I don't have a lot of military experience,but unlike you, I read a lot... While Su-25 is not better then the A-10 (A 10 has a better main gun). Su 25 is a good match for A-10... The Soviet Army was not afraid of an anti-tank plane, because of their advanced anti-air systems... The second reason, if there was to be an engagement between the two superpowers it would not be a land war, it would be a nuclear war where the A-10 would be useless...
@Linux1man I have 16 years experience as a weapons loader on A-10's. I receive my info from USAF training manuals. I don't read them, I just look at the pictures. As far as your "nuclear war" comment I suggest you google the term "Cold War" and read it alot.
You see if you actually read things and "not just looked at pictures" you might have learned more...
As far as "nuclear war" goes you should realize that everyday 24/7 even today there are Russian nuclear subs with ballistic missiles in international waters patrolling YOUR coast... If your also READ a few things about Russian modern nuclear subs, you would realize that they are nearly impossible to detect with any kinds of modern detection methods....

@Daytonaman675 First, larger gun on plane is not always better. Second due to size of gun and ammunitions it can carry less of ammunition. Third, vibration of firing is greater than on 20-23mm guns. That has effect of more spreading shoots - less precise. And FYI using aircraft to fire gun on ground target is most lethal action for aircraft if enemy have AAA due to level and straight flying.

@Santor6 I did not seen any airplane that can fly without a wing. Titanium bathtub or not. USAF tried to use A-10 in Kosovo and Serbia but after 3 or 4 downed they abandon idea. After a month they used mighty A-10 only to show-of for CNN.

Jak' is right, the "Warthog" or "hog" is just a nickname, as officially its the Thunderbolt II, with the Republic P-47 being the original "Thunderbolt" (which had the nickname of "Jug", for its resemblence to a milk jug). Kind of like the F-105 Thunderchief which had the nickname of "Thud" (which was a dark nickname referencing the sound the F-105 made slamming into the jungle floor of Vietnam after a SAM strike).

a sailor with turbines i have seen these planes in spangdahlem airbase as i was there with the german army to train with the roland aa system and the 30 mm canons are really big . the best was the g.i caught me while smoking some weed on watch at night and they took a few hits too

THe A-10 is devesating to all tanks in all form there isn't a tank in the world to withstand its might.
However a-10 is useless against air to air attacks thats why it relied so much on f15 and f16 to get rid of hostile air.
The a-10 is not solution to everything in war.

You mean the SIdewinders I have read in many articles that superior version of the AIm-9 was better suited. due to its range less flexible. however aim-9 are a cheaper option As for A-10 having tighter turns it is impossible for plane to do it simply because it is too heavy to do it.
Its armour including the bath of titanuim cockpit (which can withstand 23mm direct hit), along side with its weapon armament makes the plane to be manovible.

furthermore: Another close -suppoort attack aircraft which is much more manouvible than its A-10 counterpart is the Harrier. Its Vtol ability makes able to stop at mid air able to turn much tighet turns. and its alot faster jet
However the downside compare to the A10 is that
1) Its not fuel efficent
2) easily can be shot down - AN A-10 can come home saftly with one engine, one of its wing blown off and its weapond malfuctioned
3) a-10 have a much lower IR compare to the Harrier.

NATO claim 300 destroyed yugoslav army tanks... but at the end of a war it was 5 tanks destroyed, less than 3%... and yes, A-10 flew often during agression on Yugoslavia. Mostly on Kosovo.

Almost all docs on H. Channel about US weaponry are crap... just watch M-16 and Ak-47 comparation on Discovery, at the end, you almost think that m-16 is better, or equal with ak-47...

It's very easy to check out. Yugoslavia/Serbia still have those tanks. There is no destroyed Yu tanks on kosovo after war except those 5-13... NATO admitted....

Sure, after the war. But during the war? I don't know what type of tanks A-10s destroyed but if NATO said they did and were lying they wouldn't admit it through admittance that none of the claimed targets had been destroyed. Hopefully they would be better liars than that.

I mean, right after retreat of Yugoslav forces form Kosovo, there were not destroyed tanks left except those 13. NATO destroyed 5 and 8 were destroyed by ground mines. Yugoslavia mainly uses M-84 and old T-55 tank...

The reason the A-10 didn't have many tank kills in Yugoslavia is because most of the tanks were immediatly hidden when NATO obtained air superiority. The A-10 did destroy several pieces of artillery but eventually there weren't many targets remaining. Everyone who could run away or hide did so. As far as Gulf war #1, the A-10 was responsible for 80% of all air to ground tank kills and even scored two air to air kills against enemy helicopters. I have worked on A-10's for 14 yrs.

It is also over valued by our adversaries. After the cold war was over, the former Soviet Union released documents which stated that the A-10 was the number one threat to their armor forces in the event of war with the US and that no tanks could be expected to advance succesfully without air support because of the A-10. They created this document in the early 1980's and specifically mentioned conflict on the European continent which is why so many A-10's were based in Germany at Spangalem AB.

The perfect weapon - it was never used. It acted as an effective deterrent and was never employed in its intended mission scenario (Soviet tanks overrunning northern Europe)... It was handy in a few others though...

You got me. I made the entire thing up. I have no knowledge of the A-10. The SU-25 is far superior in every way as a close support attack aircraft. The gun on the A-10 is no match for the gun on the SU-25. Please post more comments so the rest of us can learn from your 24 years of experience in military aviation.

I don't have a lot of military experience,but unlike you, I read a lot... While Su-25 is not better then the A-10 (A 10 has a better main gun). Su 25 is a good match for A-10... The Soviet Army was not afraid of an anti-tank plane, because of their advanced anti-air systems... The second reason, if there was to be an engagement between the two superpowers it would not be a land war, it would be a nuclear war where the A-10 would be useless...
A10 is still a great machine...

@Linux1man I have 16 years experience as a weapons loader on A-10's. I receive my info from USAF training manuals. I don't read them, I just look at the pictures. As far as your "nuclear war" comment I suggest you google the term "Cold War" and read it alot.

As far as "nuclear war" goes you should realize that everyday 24/7 even today there are Russian nuclear subs with ballistic missiles in international waters patrolling YOUR coast... If your also READ a few things about Russian modern nuclear subs, you would realize that they are nearly impossible to detect with any kinds of modern detection methods....

@yourgodwillbowtous a friend of mine served in afghanistan and had to call in air support. he told me about how smart and witty the usaf guys were and how they codenamed most of their aircrafts after religious characters. the f18 was "chosen one" and a10 god. i dont know if it is like this in all the warzones, but thats what they called them when he was there :)
