Photoshop - How to Make Regular Photos Look Extraordinary!

So in simple terms, what it does is adds darker contrast to make the shadows and shading more apparent and easier to depict without all of the light beside it.

Much like if I were to look a tree facing the sun, I can see it, and its outline, but the sun is still going to blind it for the most part. Darkening the light would allow to make details like the bark easier to see depict and detail.

Simple enough, though I don't think it makes it look better to be honest.

Just open up Exposure, play with the settings, open up Color Balance, play with the settings, boom. cool shit.

This is a good tutorial but you should try and keep it shorter. 17 minutes for this tutorial seem a bit long. It does become a bit of a drag to look at.
