Jazzman....I said Isto's got a really gifted voice! In my book that's a compliment. Did you mean to respond to someone else's post? My post is right there...from 1 week ago. What's up with thinking I said it might be otherwise?
Guitar playing was very good! But this guy's got a really gifted voice. I hope he's not doing something else for work if his passion is with his music. Carry on!
Dave Guard has often been given credit for writing the song, but that's not true. According to the Kingston Trio's Bob Shane, the song was given to the parents of Tom Seaver, the great baseball pitcher while they were on their honeymoon. I think Guard did the arrangement that the world knows. Frank Sinatra refused to do the song because he believed no one could ever do it better than Bob Shane. Isto's is also great.
No Neumeg - you are right initially. Guard's estate (he died in 1991) owns the copyright and is credited on albums and sheet music. Guard had the date with Seaver's sister, and Shane was there as a double date. Both heard Mr. Seaver play the song he&wife had heard in Phoenix in 1930 on their honeymoon. But Guard was the one who transcribed it to an arrangement and took the copyright (and publishing loot) for himself, further annoying friend Shane, who has sung it for 50 years now.
Your best source for the history of the song - and virtually anything else about the early days of the Kingston Trio - is a book published in 1986 called "The Kingston Trio On Record" by Ben Blake, Allan Shaw, Jack Rubeck, et al. It is still available on Amazon and is a real treasure.
you did a great job on this song. in the process myself of learning to play and sing this song. your way of playing it is what i hope to accomplish in it. would greatly appreciate a tab of your chord choices.tryin 2 get it from what i c,but its not easy.really like everything you have put on this site.hope to hear from u soon as i hope to have this song ready 4 new years.thanx
Nice job Isto. Its close enough to the original Dave Guard Kingston Trio version to evote some retro thoughts, but yet distinctive enough to not be a copy. Most importantly I think you've captured the mood of the song while utilizing your own strong points.
you remind me of the guy who sings that song in one of the beginning episodes of spongebob squarepants (that's a compliment)! keep on rockin'

The Kingston Trio guy wasn't Dave Guard, it was Bob Shane, and I think this is the best rendition of the song next to the original. Well Done.

You are right, my bad. I don't know why I said Dave Guard - brain freeze I guess. Thanks for correcting.
