Wait a minute... this sounds absolutely NOTHING like the Ghostbusters theme. Seriously, I really can't see how Ray Parker Jr could have borrowed the melody from this to make the Ghostbusters theme...
Unlike some, they sounded as good live as they did in their albums. At their concerts the guitarists had little trampolines behind the speaker cabinets that they used to launch themselves up on to them. It was an all around great vibe.
There are no such mistakes made on the band's third album and flawless masterpiece, Sports. Every song has the potential to be a huge hit, and most of them were. It made the band rock 'n roll icons. Gone totally is the bad boy image, and a new frat-guy sweetness takes over. The whole album has a clear, crisp sound and a new sheen of consummate professionalism that gives the songs on the album a big boost.
Never realised this before but they kind of got the Miami Vice thing going on in the video or does Miami Vice have the I want a new drug thing going on in it.
@74Charm what's funny is, I always thought "Power of Love" sounded like a sped up version of "Love Stinks" during the chorus - and it's strange because Lewis thinks they may have gotten the Back to the Future soundtrack in correlation with the Ghostbusters lawsuit...
@StarWarsFan786 Someone wrote in the comments that M or whatever he is called took Ghostbusters to court about this and won. Don`t know if its true but someone in the comment section in his vid. wrote it.
@74Charm: No, it was Huey Lewis who took them to court, and they settled. The Ghostbusters thing was pretty blatant - because they'd approached Lewis about writing a theme for the movie. "Popmuzik" is indeed similar, but not so similar they'd win a lawsuit, IMO.
apparently, the reason the two sound so much alike is that the guys who had ray make the song requested it sound like huey lewis and the news :P but it was plagirised
Dumb question. What came out first in 1984 "Ghostbusters' or this song? Personally other than the similar guitar rift imo the Parker song is totally different from the Lewis song.
Also why did Huey wait so long to sue? They are both monster hits and among the most popular songs of the '80's.
On the other hand, IMO, Vanilla Ice clearly stole/sampled w/o credit the old Bowie/Queen song 'under pressure' for 'ice ice baby.'
I thought that H & T News released this first, back in the 80's..... my band copied alot of Huey's stuff and played it for weddings. I think Huey & the band was offered the chance to write the theme for Ghostbusters....but were surprised to hear Ray Parker got the deal when they didn't commit to the deal.
Great point Francis on a probably reason Huey Lewis sued Ray Parker, Jr..
Although he never admitted it publicly maybe Lewis was 'pissed' that Parker had a #1 worldwide hit w/ the ghostbusters theme after probably having the 1st crack to sing the ghostbusters theme/album.
Lewis sued Parker and Co (producers of Ghostbusters) for plagiarism. They offer Lewis the job, they declined, then they offered it to Parker who "wrote" the Ghostbuster theme that has same beat as I Want A New Drug
Hey everybody...ignore this little prick francis929, he has been harrasing women and resorting to alot of defamation of charactor on some of the people i know. This guys a stalker who uses other screennames similar to peoples whenever they dont agree with him
Well I think there's a difference between using a sample for a song or beat, and stealing creative material. Frankly, I don't think Ray should have been sued: there are songs which have been more similar which never caused a ruckus.
92% of teenagers have turned to Hip Hop and cl-ASS-ic rock.If you are part of the 8% that still listen to real music, copy and paste this message to another 5 videos.

Nah, the beat is similar, but everything else is completely different. The guitars, the lyrics, the melody....all completely different.
IMO, this wasn't enough for Huey Lewis to win a lawsuit over. They never did go to court though...Parker just settled with Lewis out of court which is not quite the same thing as admitting guilt.

Ya I gotta admit, the main melody is pretty close if not the same, but KnockYouOutCold is correct, everything else is completely different. But that happens alot, it's not like Parker straight sampled this song. And hell all the songs in the 80's sound the same to me...
It is closer to the end of the song when you notice the similarities. But it is not nearly as noticeable as say Vanilla Ice stealing the baseline from David Bowie and Queen for Under Pressure.
Everyone has the right to be an uneducated moron. You are abusing the privelege. Would you prefer idiots that don't even play their own music==hip hop hippioty shit that alls sounds the same. Piss off antfuk.
The answer to that is simple: When it comes to today's music you don't need talent; all you have to do is sell an image and create crap using computers and you're off and running. Notice no one uses real instruments anymore for pop music? Hell, you don't even have to be able to sing! They can fix vocals in post. It's a shame!
As one of the pioneers of electric music, Ryuichi Sakamoto of YMO said "...there would come an age where everybody can create music, using machines, and automation. As musicians we must pursue much more than what was acceptable before. In other words, as time progresses, it becomes harder and harder to differentiate yourself from the croud".
I think it's okay for people to use computers to make music, just don't buy music because the artist is popular, but buy music for its quality.
i understand the reasons and everythign behind the lawsuit towards parker, but in all honesty, ghostbusters is better then i want a new drug
