Hey man, i was there too but i caught her earlier in the day with a Trio..i was hanging out with Howard Rumsey, Gabe Blatizar and Lee Konitz not to mention Stan Levey, I videotaped her, did you catch any of the other stuff?
I don't know a great singer who wasn't or isn't a Chris Connor fan, and that includes Frank Sinatra. He saw and heard hear at Basin Street West and I know he collected her albums. As a person, Chris was totally non-showbusiness, not a diva, not a temperamental star, just a girl from Kansas City who loved music. Musicians loved working with her for both her remarkable talents and her easy-going nature. She'd survived losing her mother at an early age and knew what life was all about.
I've been buying her records for 55 years! The voice has stayed remarkably the same, only moving into lower registers. Sense of timing, unique use of pauses and everything else Chris is still in place. Including that shining personality and smile--she really has sort of been a Doris Day of jazz and at one time they looked very much like each other. Wonderful to see this.
Thanks to orthoman8 or to a person who sent me an email about my question. Sadly, I'm having trouble with Youtube email, and I can't see what any of the messages in my box says. Could you answer to me right here?
i saw her at Yoshi's on Claremont Ave in late 80's ... luv to see some old footage of her from the 50's or 60's --
