• I think someone should expose the other side of the argument (as there is equally significant evidence that suggests p2p has become a greater tool for the increase in complimentary profits) instead of blaming technology for overcoming an outdated business model altogether. Just because music can be free and available doesn't mean people will stop making it. Music will always have it's place regardless of what the RIAA tend to indicate.

  • Does anyone else hear the buzz from the speakers in the background?...

  • I think that (digital as in mp3, flac, wmv, ect) music may as well be free at this point. The labels should most definitely find new sources of income. I, myself, have downloaded quite a few gb's of music. Not only is the idea of free music getting engrained into the fans psyche, but the technology of today has made it almost effortless to do. I, being a musician, am actually all for the idea of free music. A fan is a fan. How he/she gets my music doesn't matter to me.

  • @JDBManalo Furthermore, I think that bands should now start relying on their tour revenue. Promote their shows more and make their money off of that. This war against downloading is a losing battle.

  • Very much so. Selling beats is fairly challenging against people who give away beats for free. Unless the catch to that, is that you can download it for free, but exclusive rights and leases still stand. But we all know ppl are not that trust worthy.

  • IT IS NOT DOOMSDAY!!!!

  • You are the man

  • very well done video, i like the points you bring up

  • all HARDWARE IS becoming free. The world of the Matrix is right around the corner. It is ONLY in the world of art / music film that this can be done, right now and NOT CAUSE WORLD COLLAPSE. Why?

not that many people in this world depend there income via the music or film industry. If the REAL tech were to be release RIGHT AWAY...ECONOMY WOULD COLLAPSE. But make no mistake - we are all going to living in a yellow sub (suspended in liquid...driving ferarris in our virtual worlds)

  • Music can be used in marketing as well. Try to search Sales Page Music in Google!

  • ur rite

  • Music today is not even worth downloading for free. It's terrible. Before p2p people would trade tapes and tape music from the radio. The problem is really that music is really really bad! Just turn on the radio today. Everysong sounds the same and they are all teerrible.

  • the music industry kind of did it too itself, it about quick money and you overplay artist till we are sick of them and hate them, it goes on forever people want what they can't have, and if the song isn't always on they will ask people wat it was and try to find it

  • there is a split now between those real music and media friendly music. i have run across both consumers. find what avenues works for you. indies are selling cds. i have sold some. and sold digitial downloads. know what you want and stick to your guns. my music has value...

  • p2p is causing a lota problems, but its here to stay. Whenever a crisis in other industries develops those industries evolve and seek to make money elsewhere. The music industry needs to realise that despite p2p etc you can still make money elsewhere other than cds. The business must evolve and look to other less traditional avenues to make money instead of just suggesting sueing p2p downloaders, that is just lazy and a massive task. use your head to find where the cash is n get with da times

  • hmmm, i agree

  • now VP BIden is working with a thing called Roundtable to protect against ?Intellectual Property, 2 side to tis coin, as piracy takes bread of the creative's pockets,&again if you can't beat them join them,so we c things like Spotify and Guvera that has marketers of proiducts like Harley davidson and COKe using ads and combining them with " free" music to get some money up from the fan, product plus music=some dough. how that is broken down and disributed? anyone's guess?

  • The only ones that loose are the ones already selling a lot.

    Everyone else wins!!!!!!

  • Free Music and get paid off ad-sales like a website maybe..

  • The rec comps use 2 many disposable artists, they dont Endorse "Creativity" thats why music now is worth shit< They rather hang on to hollywood actors with writers and gimmicks then creative souls who really love the emotion and energy music creates< I Cant wait till it Crumbles!! Man vs Machine!

  • you are very correct. most people stopped listening to music decades ago! shallow minds....

  • i love this guy!

seeing this video even after a couple of months, still mystically give me this very high-spirits to keep promoting my band's music! (ie: even though we're in indonesia!

  • How To Hints and tips Playlist no 2

  • Awesome videos. Very informative.

I also had a pink guitar. I sold it years ago :).

  • There is no MTV so we get our music which is mostly OLD 90s and back online for free. Someone like me who is a musician still supports our favorite artists if they tour around me.

  • Great video man. I hung on to every word even if your words are similar to many being written about our times.

  • Thank you for sharing your experience

  • hey, nice vid, as always man! :)

a question from me, an indie-musician from Indonesia, though:

do you think it's still possible, amidst all these FREE internet downloads, piracy, etc, for indie artists to be FULL-time in music and still make a living (ie: enough money is even OK! as long as i can live, eat, and my music touch a lot of people!) from music?

    what do u think?

    is it possible?

or musicians now have to take ANOTHER part or full-time job? like say, corporate-jobs??

  • haha i did a essay on this exact same topic for school......p2p networks really are killing the industry

  • aint it the truth......

  • i agree with you music will be harder to sell.

but if the record companies invested in finding real tallant and not just preaty faces, and thay discover an act that appeals to the majotity of music lovers we will all be buying that acts music,

  • Great info Geebz, thanks man! 5 stars

  • let me put together some kicking music for your videos?

    get in touch on myspace.

  • I love this channel, TalkMusicBiz!

YouTube has shown us how many VERY talented people are out there that might not know it or that don't take themselves seriously. They might have no intention of taking it beyond sitting on there bed and belting out a few tunes. I find that very refreshing and real. If someone is good enough, I've seen commenters ask them to make a CD ,that they would buy. If something is worth buying, it sells itself.

  • i heard a snippet of a song in a popular youtubers video that i liked and went to itunes and paid to download it. i think the industry just needs to accept that things have changed and and that they need to embrace sites like youtube instead of trying to shut them down.

  • That's the only way the majors know how to do biz.......funny thing is that now most of the majors have cut a deal with YT to get paied per view.

  • yeah on music videos posted to the yt site, but does that apply to individual users who post personal content? its been my experience that yt is trying to keep people from using copyrighted songs in their vids. many user videos have been removed or people have received warnings for using music industry songs.

  • It really has to do with the intent of the post. In short: If you do a cover song and you re-direct the viewer to go visit your site off YT and your selling services or products, that where you get hammered. But if you're just having fun....you slide.

  • well, i agree with that. if your intent is to use the songs to make money and you do not have an agreement with the record label or artist, you're violating copyright laws.

  • thats4sure.

  • music has become so intimately integrated into people's lives that they include parts of songs, or even whole songs, in their videos to show who they are and how they identify themselves. this is exposure for songs and music as a whole. and its free advertising, as far as i'm concerned. youtube should actually turn around and sue the industry to marketing fees, quite frankly.

  • Nice point of view! :)

  • @moorcll This way of thinking is what the industry needs, instead of traditionalists complaining and trying to sue everyone just because they are too dumb to think of how to evolve with the changing times

  • i'm kind of irked with the music industry now because they are suing youtube because users have put copywrited songs in their videos. i basically think the music industry should look at the use of songs in videos as a success story.

  • While it is unfortunate there's no way to police free downloads, it's in the very least more exposure for the artist. Dave Matthews allowed recorders and cams into his concerts. It's like free marketing and word of mouth. He attributes his success to his fans and it was sort of a way to give back. In return, however, it'd be cool if people made the conscious efforts to support their faves. I download from a site that does charge, but very little. My loyalties know some bounds. LOL!

  • Yea, Dave used a page from the Greatfull Dead guys. It's the new artists that is getting better unit results based on what you said; direct support from a loyal fanbase..... Thanks for the shout! :)

  • Hey Thanks G... My Friends at Taxi have been knockin this around too.. seems the general opinion there that the future for most musicioans will be in the licence of the work and it will become increasingly smaller pay checks as this new phase in the industrie continues to develope I.E. the Artists get screwed!

  • It's not that they are getting screwed as much as being forced to work for their money now (live gigs). The indusrty is a royalty based set up that has run it's course. But it's the indie artsits/labels that are still making money becuase of "true" support by their fanbase.

  • Very interesting and valid points... it's a shame that artists are being prostituted like this by companies via product endorsments or ad campaign tracks. I would hate to think these will be the only options in the future as music will undoubtedly suffer even more than it has already and cease to be an expressive artform.. Da da dat da daa - I'm lovin' it! 5

  • Da da da da, Da do do do is all I have to say to that :)

Great, now I owe royalties to The Police!

  • Very interesting show. Music is free now. Anyone who knows sites like Limewire etc, knows you can get 99 percent of any music, for nothing. Hard to see how anyone makes 'a buck' from music anymore, other than playing live.

  • That's where it's at now......the live gig.

  • another great show , thanks for the informed opinion ;o)

  • Right on...thanks

  • ROCKIN"

    x Sab

  • Thanks Anne!

  • This doesn't sound like a bad thing to me,sounds like more of an equalizer, that hopefully talent would rise instead of what a few execs at a few companies think should play repetitively without offending anyone, The record companies screwed up selling CD's that cost dimes to make for $17.98, also what do you think about the idea I've been hearing about music as a utility like power or water

  • Yea, that idea has been tossed around for a while now but the burden of accountability shot it down (artists/publishers getting their royalties). It might work if if there was a "trust factor", but there is none in the music biz.....

  • The truth is most comm music sucks! The best bands are unsigned and on MySpace. In the future, people will make their own music.

  • your comment fly's through the heart of truth. I spend allmost 80% of my time on MS looking for cool, un-molested by commercialism(sp?) music.

  • Don't forget about all digital media. But by the by, why should this be limited to digital media? Has are society and technology progressed to the point that we should not be driven by money? We should look to avoid waste of resource rather then profit. Wada ya think?

  • Wow, very well said. Hmmmmmm, driv'n by money. Could that be what is salting the value of intellectual property is the "what i deserve for my work" delema?

  • this guy is always in the know , been thinking that it going to come down to if you want to get payed you are going to have to play live, ticket sales will jump ,it will weed out the alot of BS too! thanks man

    jody p

  • Hi Jody. That is the truth for sure.....playing live and other monetized monies will have to come from artists being "real" and not just recorded acts. Actually, not a bad thing if you think about it... thanks for dropping by! :)

  • Thanks man....

  • Playing Music is enjoyable, and some may say not really Work, But we all know it is time consuming hard work, Same can be said of Sports,,, Unless we become Communists and all arts become the Property of the state , Music will be Sold, Even Companys giving music as a Bonus must have to Pay for it to give it away.. The futher into the future we go the Less Freedom we have.. Hope your wrong on this..Thanks for the Video..carl

  • Everything you say is correct! My POV of this video is more along the lines of a perception to the consumer. Yes, the artist, record companies do get aid on the backside of these deals, but Joe public dosen't see that. Nice comment, thanks!

  • Hi, I want to thank you for the last video you done ,, you mentioned Revver in it and I got involved with that.. Will see what happens,, As far as free music goes ..years ago Bands would do free concerts as a way to get noticed, who will play if theres no pay day,, Live concerts will always be, but not Free.. What about copyright?? Down the Toielt??

  • Revver is a "working" viral site that has no real community base, so pushing your video through other sites and blogs is what Revver is about. You bring up very good questions....Unfort, I'm running out of spave to type in order to address them. I'll do a video on it instead....

  • Thanks, Your videos are as Interesting as they are informative... Thanks Again..

  • I didn't really grasp it before, Geebz, but I absolutely SEE it now. It's all marketing! And yes, I agree with you about music becoming harder and harder to SELL in the future...the very near future. Awesome show, Geebz! Best, Joy

  • Thank you LJ! I'm just shooting from the hips....kinda. :)

  • you are so insightful

i just love music and i never let my kids get that free stuff man now watchin vid or listening here thats dif but you def are right why pay when you ca get it free

free is a powerful word everyone wants somethin for nothin bro plus we are so brain washed like ya said over and over again

dont ya hate when the same song is on like 4 dif stations that kills me ya hear it so much ya like it some what and i gotum so im smokinum

  • Hey man....Yep, you nailed it. It just all really means that we hve to look at new ways to do our biz if "the biz" is what we want to do with our music, yea?

  • Geeeeeeeezzzzzzzzz, depressing but true. What do we do now? :P

  • Kwwp writing, singing and loving the music for what it is.......part of your soul.

  • Opppppsss.... I meant KEEP WRITING!
