Replacing secular advisors with known fundamentalist.
Military exercises with Syria
The retoric against Israel...
Allowing veals etc. in publi functions
Filling the ourts with fundamentalist
arresting critical journalist
Preventing the Military to protect the secularism. And so on, and so on... Now you tell me, where is this going? I an anly for see misery. Rather a civilwar because most Turks won't accept a religious state or a war with other countries who oppose against the new Muslim state
@kniftig While I do see some weird statements from judges every now and then, they hardly seem any diffrent than those from the times of the military rule. And the poor quality of the current military constitution doesnt help either. I don't agree with the qualification of former advisors, directors, judges etc as secularist. They were first and foremost corrupt elitists who have done this country grave harm. And I dont fear civil war at all, because I know Erdogan will not turn Turkey into Iran
Nothing wrong with Turkey? If you mean the bird you're probably right. If you mean the country you forget about the fact that Turkey holds the most journalists in captivity. It is violent against Kurds in Iraq, It's continiously violating and invading Iraq's borders. They where the only pnes proffiting of the war in Iraq. They are hostile agains Cyprus, Greece and Israel. They are the number one in heroine trade and pimping women. And Erdogan is pissing on Ataturks grave raping the constitution
@kniftig Uhm, thats not right... The Kurdish Autonomous region of northern Iraq is working with Turkey against the PKK and they have agreed to militairy actions taken by Turks in the border areas. Erdogan does no such thing. As a follower of Ataturks principles I vote for Erdogan, who will modernise this secular republic. And those journalists... are not in jail for their writings (in in the last couple of weeks many of them have already been released).
@MrReoNetro Wake up and smell the coffee my brother. Erdogan is an extremist and is turning Turkey into a religious state. There's nothing secular to Erdogan, look at his wife. Erdogan is playing dangerous games over the back of the Turks. Why you think he arrested the military top? Why you think those journalist have been caught in the first place... Those are the signs that should have warned you. Why is Erdogan provoking Israel? He's playing powergames... Be carefull
@kniftig@kniftig Unlike you I know about Turkey's recent history on military interference with politics and how destructive that can be to the rights of individuals. There has long been a CIA-staybehind operation in Turkey called Ergenekon, wich carried out terrorist attacks like their brothers within the Gladio operation in other European countries. In Turkey this has not stopped till this day. As an atheist Turk I feel free to vote for the AKP. Erdogan even defended my rights on Egyptian TV.
@kniftig Yes, he is playing "powergames", or geopolitics as its called. And what's wrong with that? It's what the US and NATO have been doing for decades... Are you scared of Erdogan? I'm not. I know 100% for sure Turkey will never become a sharia state like Iran or Saudi-Arabia since it has never been like that and it's not in the culture of Turks. We won't accept this sort of thing.
@MrReoNetro If he's doing the right job, and i think he is. You won't be able to reject such things...See the peacefull Syria for instance.. Or will have a lot to suffer to regain it... Good luck. I wouldn't want to be in your shoes. There's nothing to be scared of Erdogan, it's the consequences of his act you should be worried about.
@kniftig Just look at the massive demonstrations in Iran. Guess what ethnicity Mousavi is from? Have you heard of what is realy taking place between Iran, Azerbaijan, Irak and Iran?? How they are fighting each other with support to ethnic minorities? Maybe you heard in the western media that Turkey has become very good friends with Iran. But this is not 100% true. Turkey is forced into this position because only this way can it help and protect the Azeri Turks in Iran by stopping executions etc.
@MrReoNetro At the moment there are two entities struggling for control in the Middle-East. Turkey and Iran. Unlike Iran, Turkey has always been friends with the West. A thing that is unacceptable in the MA, since the West "caused" all the problems. That wouldn't be a proplem if you weren't fighting over Israels back. And that's where it gets dangerous. Israel isn't playing powergames, it's fighting for its exsistance. That's an whole other level.
@kniftig Turkey will defend Israel if it is attacked unjustly by one of its neighbors, like Erdogan said we are friends with Israel and the Jewish people, thats why we say as friends; It's time to stop expanding your country and make peace with the Palestinians. Or it might be too late and even Turkey won't be able to help when you get all the revolutionairy governments of Egypt, Lybia, Syria and god knows where from on your neck.
@MrReoNetro Wow! your reply has arrogance written all over it... Really wow! I guess Turkey's warmongering has really started...We'll see how it'll end..
@kniftig ? Like I said this seems to be the future, Its not Turkey that is advocating it, we have warned Israel this would happen for many years now. We still want to be friends... I dont understand your fear and acusations of warmongering. We are trying to help Israel...
@MrReoNetro Your acting as if Turkey is the police force of the Middle east and is the objective wise country that can judge others.... Guess again... You don't even have free press. Your accusing Israel of expanding, and in meanwhile you are occupying Cyprus en suppressing minorities like the Kurds. You permit a terrororganisation to send terrorist to Gaza and cry when Israel takes measuerments against it.. Turkey is in no position to judge others.
@kniftig What?? Where did you get this information? Like I said; Erdogan defenden secularism and the rights of atheists in the post-revolutionary capitals of north Africa. And its not possible to turn Turkey into an islamic state. No Turkish country has been without civil law. Even in Ottoman times. No Turk wants sharia get over your fears idiot.
@MrReoNetro When did Erdogan defended secularism? Seems like censorship has arrived well in Turkey... I guess you guys are more lost then we thought in the first place...
@kniftig ? I'm not in Turkey, i'm in the Netherlands. Appartenly like you. It seems that censorship has arrived in the Netherlands for the media here didnt cover what Erdogan said. He defended secularism and the rights of atheists on Egyptian TV. And if you are in the netherlands but claim to know more Turks that want sharia there is something wrong with you, only a couple of percent want this, maybe 2 or 3 percent. And those are your friends... what the hell is wrong with you??
@MrReoNetro Im in the Netherlands too. I don't consider those Turks as my friends at all. I don't consider anyone with such a doctrine to be my friend. He can say whatever he wants on Egyptian television to please who he wants. It's the acts that count. The reality is that he's turning Turkey into a religious state. Look at the changes he made! Turkey used to be the living proof that the secret to succes is to keep religion and politics seperated and now he lets Turkey...
@kniftig The AKP is an observer-member in the European Christian party. In the last decade they have restored dozens of churches, opened some of them to prayer, given back schools and monestaries, scrapped obstructive and repressive laws, giving schools more freedom over their curriculum, allowed education in mother tongue for non-Turks, allowed other languages to be used in media and politics, etc.
@MrReoNetro ow the Christian parties in Europe aren't any better... But ok, that's good that he's fighting for religious and cultural freedoms, Just wondering why there position was so terrible in the first place? But that is no reason to ignore the other events taking place. Wolf -> Sheepclothes...
@kniftig In fact the freedoms of minorities like Christians and Jews was restricted by the pro-american military governments... Its because they, as nationalists, propagated an ethnic and religious homogenous Turkey wich doesnt exist. AKP has broken this lie. Ofcourse there are still problems in Turkey (as there are in Israel) but the current government wants more religious freedom for all. The mayor problem still seems to be in accepting Alevism as Islam, not tolerating Christianity or Judaism
@MrReoNetro ...get sucked into geopolitical matters, which mind you, will cost huge amounts of money and will/can even provoke a war (I'm guessing with Iran)
@kniftig I dont think so, there has been peace between Turkey and Iran for over 400 years (same as with the Netherlands) and i'm not seeing that change. For one thing close to 50% of the population of Iran belongs to a Turkish minority, mostly the Azeri's. The Azeri's are also traditionaly strong in the Iranian military and I dont think they will join a war against the Turks. Remember during WW1 many Iranians joined the Ottoman forces to fight against the Russians and Brittish!
@MrReoNetro I sure hope so. But now they are both in the posiiton to win respect and authority in the Middle East. And there can only be one winner... 400 years of peace isnt a guarantee for the future. Especially not with someone like Ahmedinidjad.. Anyway thanks for the insights. I've changed my view on Turkey but i stay sceptical if you don't mind, and i hope you will too. Shalom/Salaam Abe!!
@kniftig I am 100% sure there will be a pro-secular revolution in Iran within the next couple of years. Back in 2009 during the Iranian revolt I predicted there would be a revolution in Egypt within a 5 years and I was spot on. Ahmedinejad will be the last president of the Islamic republic of Iran. Mousavi will be the first president of the Secular and Democratic Republic of Iran by 2014 mark my words. Irans influence never went beyond parts of Syria, Irak, Lebanon and Afghanistan.Turkey has won
@MrReoNetro I sure hope you're right and the world will be liberated of the idiot fundamental warmongers.. Thanks for the insights and the arguemented discussion
@MrReoNetro I know more Turks that defend sharia then those who oppose... That's the result of no free-press i guess. Misinformation makes you decide... You should be scared or stay an idiot at least you won't be aware of your situation.
The only way Turkey became modern, is because of Ataturk turned his back on sharia. It stays an Islamic country. When muslims want to implement sharia law, by democracy, the army takes over. Means that Turkey is an army state. One of the demands of the EU, is democracy. When we look at the demography of Turkey, most Turks are muslim. So democracy would turn Turkey into an Islamic theocracy. And yes there are a lot of muslims in Europe. Since Islam is a political ideology we don't need more of it
@Brulluhman You seem misinformed. Sharia was dismantled in 1858, not by Ataturk... And I think you forget that there are 7 Turkish countries and NONE of them is islamic theocratic. Around 1919 there were even more Turkish countries (around 10) and they were all secular, democratic republics. They gave female suffrage way more earlier than most European countries. You are either ignorant of Turkish culture, or you are an asshole.
@MrJapaneseboy1111 , Oh I miss understand but that doesnt show I am wrong. If You want to find fight , you shouldnt you should find the richest and the poorest. Look araound. Its not about religon
@MrJapaneseboy1111 its funny comming from japanese, during the history your country killed and enslaved more people than germans in 1 and second war, remember only chinese mutilated people by japanese people, you practicly invaded whole asia
@MrSmigul If Japan didn't enter the war, there would have been no Korea today like there is no Manchuria today. The Chinese were the murderes, genocidal maniacs killing all Mongols, Tibetans, Koreans, Tungus, Uyghurs etc.
I fail to see the logic of his argument - are we supposed to take Turkey in JUST TO SHOW we're not anti-Islamic?
That's about the worst possible reason in the world. If I followed that logic, I'd ask the US to merge with Mexico to show all those "Hispanic"-Americans that the US likes them.
The simple fact is that Turkey is not European. That doesn't mean it is inherently bad, only that it doesn't belong in the EUROPEAN union, just like Japan doesn't for the same reason.
Turkey has no place in Europe! They screwed Eastern Europe for centuries and now they want to join it. Does Europe need to be neighbors with Iran, Irak an Syria? Does Europe need to be lead in the European parliament by a Muslim country?
A young girl in Toronto Canada Islamic community was burned to death by her father as an "honor killing" when she wore mascara and was caught seeing a boy..(where do these machismo ignorant and arrogant criminals get their frisking ideas from?)
Their muslim leaders. Definitely not what we want in our country the ideals not the people, just as there are great Chinese, Russians, Americans their corrupt leaders all want to screw the common man. Islamic leaders same but more power as in China.
What a turd this guy is. I didn't watch the vid but did read his anti-Caucasian CNN blog a few minutes ago. If it were up to me, this foreign-born racist ingrate would be tarred and feathered and then booted unceremoniously out of the country! He can take the "whitey's holding you down" cancer he spreads back with him to the toilet he was born in. Honesty, just kick the scumbag's ass out of here!!
Btw, same for ted koppel; he started this culture of hate-on-whitey, he can go back to England NOW
European states MUST check their curriculum and remove the racist, hate remarks asgainst Turks and Islam from their education system. Otherwise unfortunately we are be bound to see more Hitlers. In fact we've already seen just 15 years ago in Serbia under the name of " Milosevic" the butcher. Islamophobia and anti-Turkic education system throughout many states in Europe is a shame for the human kind in 21st century.
1) Turkey is not only Istanbul; in fact, the larger parts of Asia are barely as developed as Istanbul. And 2) I think the main concern is that, if Turkey joins the EU, the EU will be flooded with millions of people wanting to work(=taking the jobs of current Europeans). This is a very large country in terms of population after all
For all the services Turkey provided to NATO The EU slammed the door into the face of Turkey's EU membership while in the same time inviting ex NATO's Enemies ( East Europeans) for a full membership.
The message is loud and clear to all Muslims!
But there is a good twist to this story! ..Turkey is growing fast and has no need for Europe and thanks to a New competent leadership, Turkey is now finding itself a leading role in the middle east and the Islamic world.
"If you studie history you uderstand that it was not a invation its called khilafa".
Peace4usall2 and if you would study grammar maybe people would understand what your point is?
You are correct on one thing, even if Turkey spends millions for propaganda, awards, humanitarian aid it will not give them a green light for the EU. The world sees through the Yalan. EU and Europe ALREADY trades with the Middle east, in fact, European products are sought after in the Middle East.
Honestly i think turkey does not need the EU ,turkey is strong country with a rich culture and hard working people and good relation with arab world and china india and brasil turkey itself its a POWER. so dont think the turks are loosing out. they only want to be good neighbour and any way you want it or not part of europe in turkey.so in near futur i think EU need turkeys market in order to expand.to the middleast .
What is this ASSWIPE talking about? Turkey was only established in 1923, it was a Christian Country 11 centuries before the Islamic invasions and it will happen again in Europe.
A country that still occuppies an EU country after 36 years is just one of many reasons why Turkey shouldn't even be considered for EU membership.
When Turkey leaves Northern Cyprus & restores all the damaged Monasteries, Churches, Graveyards & Historical Sites that Turkey has desecrated, when Turkey pays compensation to all the 250,000 refugees it created in Cyprus, then & only then should Turkey even be considered for any trading link with the EU.
@ExtremeBogom Islam as its current state maybe, but not so long ago christianity either, so lets bet for the future instead of of thinking it can never happen.
look all of you must watch HARUN YAHYA COM and very intersting as that site talks of JESUS RETURN and befire that MEHDI s arrival abd beating Anti Christ Dajjal... all of you watch please dont put such harsh wirds Turkey is good and getting better now
"modern turkey only comprises a portion of istanbul and a bit of ankara The rest is utterly medieval, conservative, sexually frustrated, illiterate and poor as dirt"
Now, who´s going to pay for that? What a dumbass. For the past 40 years turks in europe have showed they absolutely don´t belong in a secular and modern Europe and I´m sure their presence has cost more then what they paid in taxes. Besides, modern turkey only comprises a portion of istanbul and a bit of ankara The rest is utterly medieval, conservative, sexually frustrated, illiterate and poor as dirt. (with alarming birthrates!!) I bet this gentleman likes India to be part as well
@colombiano4420 HAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA man i hope youre joking because if your not you;re showing how fuckin stupid you are turkey can call up everyone they want if theres a war so lets say 30 million people who are able too fight in turkey and another million in europe hahaha and our allies i guess you didnt know that
@CrooswijkseMurderer1 Turkey must not Join EU lets EU get fuck off and create Turkish Islamic Union is the best way... cheers to all Turks and get the fuck out EU and USA
@erdnafern no fuck that islamic union bullshit also religion is religion and politics is politics that must be seperated from each other turkish people just need to vote for MHP and not fuckin akp they want to turn turkey into an arab country sort of
"How to modernize them.." How condescending. How 19th century. This guy thinks the EU is the light bearer that will civilise/secularize the muslim world. Colonialism failed in that regard now Zakaria is advocating another experiment: take them into the bosom of Europe & they will change. But the EU is having a hard time integrating the 15 million muslims ALREADY in Europe. He thinks absorbing Turkey will change the muslim world. It is just as likely that the muslim world will absorb Europe.
This man speaks crap!! Turkey should NOT join EU!! They can have a trade deal but it cannot be a member since it's not in Europe and it does not share European values. Europe would be setting itself up for an immigration crisis where Turks who are mostly muslims, who do not integrate into European society well, flood into Western countries and that will lead to social conflict in those countries which is the last thing they want.
Turkey should stop persecuting the Christians’ church!
The Istanbul pogrom was a state-orchestrated pogrom that compelled Greek Christians to leave Istanbul, the first Christian city in violation to the Treaty of Lausanne. Turkey requires by law that the Ecumenical Patriarch must be an ethnic Greek, holding Turkish citizenship by birth, although most of the Greek minority has been expelled. The expropriation of church property and the closing of the Orthodox School of Halki is not right either.
Hopefully Turkey will turn more towards Iran & Iraq & Syria, show their true face, and we won't have to hear about this EU nonsense much anymore. Meanwhile hopefully Europe will start producing more babies. Also if muslims are anything like most Europeans regarding religion they will start giving up islam. Which will leave less to worry about regarding incitement. Whether by the Turkish PM or others stirring up trouble now or that will come down the pike in the future.
Another question is how well has EU assimilated the 12 million muslims currently in the EU? These "European" muslims are lucky enough to BE in the EU yet they are not content. They consistently remain at the lowest socioeconomic level where they blame the countries who were kind or stupid enough to accept them for their problems. Their discontent and poverty give rise to all sorts of problems. EU have not successfully assimilated these yet are considering opening the gates to more. Chaos.
The US is not willing to give 112 million Mexicans the right to settle in the US yet allowing 80 million (120 million in a few decades) Turks to settle in the EU is fine and dandy. Such hypocrisy. This guy equates not allowing Turks to settle in Europe to "turning their back" on Turkey. Turkey wouldn't allow ANY citizen of the poorer and less stable surrounding ARAB states to just settle in Turkey yet they regard not being allowed in to the EU as an insult. Is that an insult to Arabs? No.
@mixedgrain Keep in mind Turkey is a member of NATO, an organization partly dedicated to defending Europe from military threats. Is it meant to only guard the tent, but not be allowed in?
@rebeccaabdallah There are many countries with military alliances-Japan and the US, Korea and the US, the US in NATO. Yet no one is suggesting that the Americans should be allowed to live in the EU or that Japanese & Koreans should have the automatic right to live in the US or vice versa. Only in the case of Turkey is that type of non-sequitur being used. Also no country is in an alliance as a favor to anyone else; Europe is also obligated to defend Turkey. I'm afraid your reasoning is weak.
@mixedgrain Except the U.S. is on a different continent than the E.U. just like Japan and Korea are on a different continent than the U.S. Turkey is partly in Europe so it would make sense for them to be in the club. Of course the E.U. might break apart anyway so this whole thing might be a mute point.
@rebeccaabdallah So then this about being European & not about a being in a military alliance. Because if it were then it wouldn't matter where they were. But being in the same area doesn't change the argument either. The African Union, the CSTO (Russia, Armenia, Belarus,etc..) are made up of countries in the same areas but they don't give each other's citizens automatic residency rights either. Again only with Turkey do we see these issues interpreted in terms of entitlement or rejection.
@rebeccaabdallah I am against Turkey in the EU for reasons I mentioned in my other posts. Economic & military integration is good but allowing all Turkish citizens to settle is an irreversible move in the same way Roman Europe was fundamentally changed by the Germanic invasions. In those conditions, new peoples arise and some disappear. I can see why the US and some EU governments want Turkey in but that is an irreversible option with unforeseeable ramifications.
@rebeccaabdallah only 5% of Turkey is in Europe, the rest is in Asia minor. Turkey is NOT a European country and never will be. Turkey even discriminates against the Christians living there, and how is that similar to European values? Turkey does not share European values and it is a much poorer country. It would be suicide to let it join because millions of Turks would emigrate straight into Western Europe which is already facing a crisis of trying to get muslims to integrate.
@ugboy1 I don't think Turks will flood into Europe. And while I'm not an expert on Christianity in Turkey, Turkey does have a reputation for being a fairly secular country. Attaturk, the founder of the modern state of Turkey went out of his way to copy much of European secularism.
@rebeccaabdallah "I don't think Turks will flood into Europe." No one can know that. And what time frame are we talking about? The Orthodox church is not allowed to open a seminary so they can't train priests. Obama brought that up when he visited Turkey last year. The Patriarch is required to be a Turkish citizen but since there are now only about 4,000 Orthodox Christians left in the once Christian country, the church's future is dim. The struggle there between secularism & Islam is ongoing.
@mixedgrain You're right I don't know that Turks will not flood into Europe, that's why I wrote "think", it was my estimation. France and Germany are both members of the E.U., you don't see hordes of Frenchmen flooding into Germany do you? The struggle in Turkey is not between Islam and Secularism (which would imply that Secularism is a religion) but rather Islamism (political Islam) and Secularism. As I've said before the E.U. might be on the verge of splitting up anyway...
what a dumbass. Who´s going to pay for that?!? before their enormous population comes any close to modern european standards will take lightyears, and still it would be a reactionary and nationalistic lot. Besides, turkish presence in modern-day western europe has shown that they don´t belong there.
Well it is USA who has most problems with Turkey not joining EU. Turkey is undoubtedly a great prospering and democratic country. But I think that what Turks want most is the EU brand, not the actual integration into the continental confederation. EU, on the other hand, needs a lot of coherence in its current post-Lisbon transformation which is a challenge that will need great deal of dedication from the MS. So I see the EU position basically as "I'm sorry, can't we just stay friends?"
Fareed Zakaria does not understand the dilemma Western European countries face with Turkey joining the EU. In the UK, we are already struggling from the immigration from Eastern European countries such as Poland and Latvia. If we let Turkey join the EU, we will be swamped with another wave of immigrants from Turkey and it will only worsen the immigration situation in the UK.
Surely it is not a viable option to let Turkey in.
This is exactly why we have these problems in the modern world. Because of you and your kind and your hostile religious takeover you call a religion is why modern and liberal minded Europeans despise your kind.
"Muslims have a duty to spread Justice on this earth"
WTF is that? I didnt know this barbaric medieval religion had to be chaperone and tell me how to live my life. You want to worship god the way you want? Good, do so and be modest about it. Nobody likes someone to proselytize to them.
All around, your borderline extremist views disgust me. Your kind disgusts me and most of all, your religion disgusts me.
the fuck is wrong with you racist, islam hates racism, "glory be to arabs and turks", islam is for everyone, westerners, asians, south asians, glory be to muslims. islam came to end the ignorant nationalism you're spouting. just read the hadith of what the prophet saws says about the one who is proud of his country, you are not a turk, or an arab, you are muslim, get it.
hey u little dog, why don't u go learn some manners first?
Secondly, as a Muslim Arab, i'm spreading unity between Arabs and Turks Muslims. If i was a Malay, i would say Malay and Turks. In either way, the comment also says ISLAMIC WORLD, so this include ALL MUSLIMS. You piece of stupid shit. Wise up u bastard.
@ArabianRhythm, i have islamic etiquette, so i am not going to get into a slanging match with you. all i am going to say is beware the punishment of Allah swt if you continue your nationalism. your allegiance is not to turkey or arabs, it is to all muslims, and according to many hadith a true muslim has no pride in his country.
oh and thanks for calling me a dog and bastard. you're good deeds are mine on the day of judgement.
@ArabianRhythm, ahahaha, you really should read into your religion. what you are doing is haraam, dont talk about spreading islam and jihad until you do jihad on yourself. correct your evil attributes.
@ArabianRhythm, you are an embarrassment. you are displaying the characteristics of jahilliyah. no wonder muslims are in the state they are in when we have people like you, who are hateful and rude to other muslims. i promise you Allah swt will punish you for this evil. i was going to forgive you but now i am definitetly not. see you on the day of judgement.
The man is right!! why fear islam? why not welcome Turkey in EU. I think that would improve the relationship between the west world and the muslim world, and we need that right now!
"I'm really amazed at your ignorance. Don't people in Turkey learn where Europe's borders go and which countries are in the EU?
More questions?"
With a handle like brooklyn358 i assume that you are from the States, as am I, but how on earth can you call someone ignorant when you are apparently completely uneducated. Please for the sake of humanity, don't procreate and stay in your mothers basement till the end of your life. Thanks you would be doing us all a great favor.
@brooklyn358, First of all Greenland is considered part of Europe because it is part of the Kingdom of Denmark and up until it was granted home rule was part of the EC, which later became the EU.
2) Iceland isn't part of the EU.
3)Turkey is the one of the most progressive Islamic State today. They have a very liberal constitution and are making the necessary advancements in human rights which, according to amnesty internationals, have dramatically decreased over the last 4 years
In Istanbul we have 144 fonctionning churches but in Athens, they don't have one mosque! Sant Antogno on Istiklal street is one of biggest churches. If you care about human rights, what are you saying about the new candidate Serbia?
Turkey owes all its secularism to a great man called Mustafa Kemal Ataturk. Islamists are currently trying to get a permanent hold on Turkey, but it's not going to happen. Islam along with all other organised religions is going to wither and die anyway.
for look us opinion, check this "recep taip erdogan davos"... i hate this guy but what he say is the opinion of the TURKS on that momment..... we dont hate somebody but we are for the fair in world.... if we cant get it with word than it will be war.... and everybody knows how we make war..... go and read the history books.... costantinapol, rome, wien, cairo, pudapest, MEKKA, medina, that was the last time we was angry... DONT MAKE US ANGRY.... its easy but dont do it....
the ISLAM says that every human is same... we are the only country in europe to open the ports for the jewish people in world war ll and let them inside us country.... and we are the only country that have give a clear opinion to israel.... we dont hate the jewish or christians,,,, BUT WE WILL SAY ALWAYS THE THINGS THAT ARE RIGHT FOR US,,,, WE DONT LYYYYYY,,, and from holland i will wish everybody a good an well live so eather TURK wishing;)))

ISLAMMMMM is not only come for you but for the hole world.... dont claim it if it your own,,, it is for us all
wrong answer zakaria...yes there are muslims in europe but if Turkey gets into the EU, then all the porr citizens in turkey will move into europe and then these european coutries will have to pay for thier poverty...it is Turkey's government that should take this burden on.
fareed Zakaria belong to terror religion ' Bahai ', he is openly support alqaeda group called JONDOLLAH inside iran as a freedom party , question is if CNN journalist support terror group killing 1000s civilian , world is finished when bahai terrorist (they r suppoted saddam b4)
CNN must know this terror element openly in 25 october support alqaeda group called jondollah.
shame on CNN for supporting bahai terrorist and al qaeda terrorists.shame
Turkey is not the only modernizing Muslim society. What do you call Kuwait, Oman, Qutar, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emrites? Fareed Zakaria is such a sellout puppet.
Saudi may one day be more modern than your country. Please type in these three videos.
"King Abdullah Economic City by CNN"
"king abdullah university of science and technology"
"Restoring Historic Jeddah - English version"
The media hates to see these Muslim countries modernize. They want you to think that progression can only happen in secluar Western democracies. We Muslims don't need the WEST to invade our lands and tear apart our Islamic governments, we can progress on our own.
@peace4usall2 It's not about loving Turkey or not loving it. As for me, I like their history, their culture and the sound of the turkish language but I don't want Turkey to be in the European Union. It's easy to say that if you don't allow Turkey to enter EU then you hate them. No, EU is not the union of the "countries who love each other".
Kosovo and Albania are not even applying for an EU membership but they are situated in Europe. Turkey is the first Muslim country to apply and it is not even in Europe (only 4% is), and that's exactly the problem.
actually thats an old chestnut. turkey is in europe all of it. its just our definition of where geophraphical europe is changed when the barbarians were at the gate so to speak. but the problem is that even if its false, the fact that most europeans think its true becomes the defacto defintion. turkey being european is an opinon thats largely the preserve of academics, particularly historians, especially medievil historians. remember modern turkey is the eastern roman empire.
tell me what part of Iceland and Greenland is the european area but still they have the ability to enter in European Union like there is no tommorow, But when its the Turks its no,no.
@DEVRIMCI2007: First of all, Greenland is NOT part of the EU neither is it part of Europe geographically. Second of all, Iceland IS in Europe geographically, as well as it is a member of the EU.
I'm really amazed at your ignorance. Don't people in Turkey learn where Europe's borders go and which countries are in the EU?
@brooklyn358 is the why Greenland once part of ECC , if they didnt rejected the agreements they would of joined,Iceland geogrphiclly is far away then europe then turkey.Your main igonarance is christainity you have love for your on religion, that u wont like a muslim country which securalist. There are 8 million Turks in Europe , we arre the most intergrated people in europe.
Mr. Zakaria you are either too immature or too cunning and biased. Go study turkish barbarism and racism and a culture of denialism and then express opinions on EU and Turkey.
Turkey is a fsacist state and NOT a democracy. Fascism and racism is built into the fabric of this backward culture.
You are no different from any other slick politician who speaks favorably about such a fascist state because they served your interests during the cold war and now because of their proximity to Iraq.
Modernizing Muslim? You mean like from improvised bombs to sophisticated guided misile technologies? Islam is not a natinoal society, it's a religion. Are you suggesting to modernize a religion? Muslim are not growing, they're spreading by every means possible both peaceful and war. World domination is in their minds. The final war is between Islam and God. Christianity will have disappeared by then.
Lol@ Turkey as a muslim country. A muslim country government of which prohibits wearing hijab 2universities? Give me a break.
Modernize the Muslims? ROTFL. Thanks a lot, I don't think Muslims need that, nor r they asking anyone to come & "modernize" them. I'd rather advise Mr. Zakaria 2 concentrate on "modernizing" himself&his family, &then c what happens ))))
Some of us out there have ZERO self respect & this is exacty y the Ummah is being humiliated these days . So sad.
We dont want anymore shitbag muslims in Europe. And Fareed Zakaria can fuck off back to salamibad!!

Replacing secular advisors with known fundamentalist.
Military exercises with Syria
The retoric against Israel...
Allowing veals etc. in publi functions
Filling the ourts with fundamentalist
arresting critical journalist
Preventing the Military to protect the secularism. And so on, and so on... Now you tell me, where is this going? I an anly for see misery. Rather a civilwar because most Turks won't accept a religious state or a war with other countries who oppose against the new Muslim state
kniftig 3 months ago

And Erdogan is pissing on Ataturks grave raping the constitution
kniftig 3 months ago

Be carefull
kniftig 3 months ago
@kniftig @kniftig Unlike you I know about Turkey's recent history on military interference with politics and how destructive that can be to the rights of individuals.

Good luck.
MrReoNetro 3 months ago
@MrReoNetro At the moment there are two entities struggling for control in the Middle-East. Turkey and Iran. Unlike Iran, Turkey has always been friends with the West. A thing that is unacceptable in the MA, since the West "caused" all the problems. That wouldn't be a proplem if you weren't fighting over Israels back. And that's where it gets dangerous. Israel isn't playing powergames, it's fighting for its exsistance. That's an whole other level.
kniftig 3 months ago
@kniftig Turkey will defend Israel if it is attacked unjustly by one of its neighbors, like Erdogan said we are friends with Israel and the Jewish people, thats why we say as friends; It's time to stop expanding your country and make peace with the Palestinians. Or it might be too late and even Turkey won't be able to help when you get all the revolutionairy governments of Egypt, Lybia, Syria and god knows where from on your neck.

@MrReoNetro Your acting as if Turkey is the police force of the Middle east and is the objective wise country that can judge others.... Guess again... You don't even have free press. You permit a terrororganisation to send terrorist to Gaza and cry when Israel takes measuerments against it.. Turkey is in no position to judge others.

kniftig 3 months ago
@kniftig What?? Where did you get this information? Like I said; Erdogan defenden secularism and the rights of atheists in the post-revolutionary capitals of north Africa. And its not possible to turn Turkey into an islamic state. No Turkish country has been without civil law. Even in Ottoman times. No Turk wants sharia get over your fears idiot.
MrReoNetro 3 months ago
@MrReoNetro When did Erdogan defended secularism? Seems like censorship has arrived well in Turkey... I guess you guys are more lost then we thought in the first place...
kniftig 3 months ago

Turkey used to be the living proof that the secret to succes is to keep religion and politics seperated and now he lets Turkey...
kniftig 3 months ago
@kniftig Can you name me 1 change the AKP has made to turk Turkey towards an islamic country?
MrReoNetro 3 months ago
@kniftig The AKP is an observer-member in the European Christian party. In the last decade they have restored dozens of churches, opened some of them to prayer, given back schools and monestaries, scrapped obstructive and repressive laws, giving schools more freedom over their curriculum, allowed education in mother tongue for non-Turks, allowed other languages to be used in media and politics, etc.
MrReoNetro 3 months ago
@MrReoNetro ow the Christian parties in Europe aren't any better... But ok, that's good that he's fighting for religious and cultural freedoms, Just wondering why there position was so terrible in the first place? But that is no reason to ignore the other events taking place. Wolf -> Sheepclothes...
kniftig 3 months ago
@kniftig In fact the freedoms of minorities like Christians and Jews was restricted by the pro-american military governments... Its because they, as nationalists, propagated an ethnic and religious homogenous Turkey wich doesnt exist. AKP has broken this lie. Ofcourse there are still problems in Turkey (as there are in Israel) but the current government wants more religious freedom for all. The mayor problem still seems to be in accepting Alevism as Islam, not tolerating Christianity or Judaism

@MrReoNetro ...get sucked into geopolitical matters, which mind you, will cost huge amounts of money and will/can even provoke a war (I'm guessing with Iran)
kniftig 3 months ago
@kniftig I dont think so, there has been peace between Turkey and Iran for over 400 years (same as with the Netherlands) and i'm not seeing that change. For one thing close to 50% of the population of Iran belongs to a Turkish minority, mostly the Azeri's. The Azeri's are also traditionaly strong in the Iranian military and I dont think they will join a war against the Turks. Remember during WW1 many Iranians joined the Ottoman forces to fight against the Russians and Brittish!
MrReoNetro 3 months ago

Ahmedinejad will be the last president of the Islamic republic of Iran. theres nothing wrong with Turkey joining Europe if they were modern.. BUT THEY'RE NOT MODERN thats really the big deal..
4000marco 3 months ago
The only way Turkey became modern, is because of Ataturk turned his back on sharia. It stays an Islamic country. When muslims want to implement sharia law, by democracy, the army takes over. Means that Turkey is an army state. One of the demands of the EU, is democracy. When we look at the demography of Turkey, most Turks are muslim. So democracy would turn Turkey into an Islamic theocracy. And yes there are a lot of muslims in Europe. Since Islam is a political ideology we don't need more of it
Brulluhman 3 months ago
@Brulluhman You seem misinformed. Sharia was dismantled in 1858, not by Ataturk... And I think you forget that there are 7 Turkish countries and NONE of them is islamic theocratic. Around 1919 there were even more Turkish countries (around 10) and they were all secular, democratic republics. They gave female suffrage way more earlier than most European countries. You are either ignorant of Turkish culture, or you are an asshole.

1) Turkey is not only Istanbul; in fact, the larger parts of Asia are barely as developed as Istanbul. And 2) I think the main concern is that, if Turkey joins the EU, the EU will be flooded with millions of people wanting to work(=taking the jobs of current Europeans). The message is loud and clear to all Muslims!
But there is a good twist to this story! ..Turkey is growing fast and has no need for Europe and thanks to a New competent leadership, Turkey is now finding itself a leading role in the middle east and the Islamic world.

It is just as likely that the muslim world will absorb Europe.
mixedgrain 1 year ago

Chaos.
mixedgrain 1 year ago
The US is not willing to give 112 million Mexicans the right to settle in the US yet allowing 80 million (120 million in a few decades) Turks to settle in the EU is fine and dandy. Such hypocrisy. This guy equates not allowing Turks to settle in Europe to "turning their back" on Turkey. Turkey wouldn't allow ANY citizen of the poorer and less stable surrounding ARAB states to just settle in Turkey yet they regard not being allowed in to the EU as an insult. Is that an insult to Arabs? No.
mixedgrain 1 year ago
@mixedgrain Keep in mind Turkey is a member of NATO, an organization partly dedicated to defending Europe from military threats. Is it meant to only guard the tent, but not be allowed in?
rebeccaabdallah 1 year ago
@rebeccaabdallah There are many countries with military alliances-Japan and the US, Korea and the US, the US in NATO. Yet no one is suggesting that the Americans should be allowed to live in the EU or that Japanese & Koreans should have the automatic right to live in the US or vice versa. Only in the case of Turkey is that type of non-sequitur being used. Also no country is in an alliance as a favor to anyone else; Europe is also obligated to defend Turkey. I'm afraid your reasoning is weak.
mixedgrain 1 year ago
@mixedgrain Except the U.S. is on a different continent than the E.U. just like Japan and Korea are on a different continent than the U.S. Turkey is partly in Europe so it would make sense for them to be in the club. Of course the E.U. might break apart anyway so this whole thing might be a mute point.
rebeccaabdallah 1 year ago
@rebeccaabdallah So then this about being European & not about a being in a military alliance. Because if it were then it wouldn't matter where they were. But being in the same area doesn't change the argument either. The African Union, the CSTO (Russia, Armenia, Belarus,etc..) are made up of countries in the same areas but they don't give each other's citizens automatic residency rights either. Again only with Turkey do we see these issues interpreted in terms of entitlement or rejection.
mixedgrain 1 year ago
@mixedgrain So then are you against the E.U. in general or just Turkey's membership in it?
rebeccaabdallah 1 year ago
@rebeccaabdallah I am against Turkey in the EU for reasons I mentioned in my other posts. Economic & military integration is good but allowing all Turkish citizens to settle is an irreversible move in the same way Roman Europe was fundamentally changed by the Germanic invasions. In those conditions, new peoples arise and some disappear. I can see why the US and some EU governments want Turkey in but that is an irreversible option with unforeseeable ramifications.
mixedgrain 1 year ago

Attaturk, the founder of the modern state of Turkey went out of his way to copy much of European secularism.
rebeccaabdallah 1 year ago
@rebeccaabdallah "I don't think Turks will flood into Europe." No one can know that. And what time frame are we talking about? The Orthodox church is not allowed to open a seminary so they can't train priests. Obama brought that up when he visited Turkey last year. The Patriarch is required to be a Turkish citizen but since there are now only about 4,000 Orthodox Christians left in the once Christian country, the church's future is dim. The struggle there between secularism & Islam is ongoing.
mixedgrain 1 year ago

The European Union (EU) is an ECONOMIC and POLITICAL union but NOT a CULTURAL UNION. DUMBASS, NOTHING TO DO WITH RELGION, RACIST CHRISTIANS
berkbbx3 1 year ago
Well it is USA who has most problems with Turkey not joining EU. Turkey is undoubtedly a great prospering and democratic country. But I think that what Turks want most is the EU brand, not the actual integration into the continental confederation. EU, on the other hand, needs a lot of coherence in its current post-Lisbon transformation which is a challenge that will need great deal of dedication from the MS. So I see the EU position basically as "I'm sorry, can't we just stay friends?"
vanessirac 1 year ago
Fareed Zakaria does not understand the dilemma Western European countries face with Turkey joining the EU. In the UK, we are already struggling from the immigration from Eastern European countries such as Poland and Latvia. If we let Turkey join the EU, we will be swamped with another wave of immigrants from Turkey and it will only worsen the immigration situation in the UK.
Surely it is not a viable option to let Turkey in.

Arabian Knights stormed out of the desert to spread ALLAH's Words & the world was ruled by MUSLIMS!
Ottoman Turks were later given the Flag by ALLAH & again the world was ruled by MUSLIMS!
Long live Arab & Turkic worlds.
Glory be to Islam, Glory be to the Sultans.
NO to nationalism! Muslims have a duty to spread Justice on this earth.
The Mahdi will be in Istanbul & Mecca.
Jesus is our next leader.
Glory be to Arabs and Turks.
Long live Islamic world. We will RULE again!

This is exactly why we have these problems in the modern world. Because of you and your kind and your hostile religious takeover you call a religion is why modern and liberal minded Europeans despise your kind.

Turkey owes all its secularism to a great man called Mustafa Kemal Ataturk. Islamists are currently trying to get a permanent hold on Turkey, but it's not going to happen. Islam along with all other organised religions is going to wither and die anyway.

No, EU is not the union of the "countries who love each other".

isnt kosovo and albania in the eu arent they muslim countries aswell i cant see why turkey cant join if kosovo and albania are eu nations
waszzam23 2 years ago
Kosovo and Albania are not even applying for an EU membership but they are situated in Europe. Turkey is the first Muslim country to apply and it is not even in Europe (only 4% is), and that's exactly the problem.
brooklyn358 2 years ago
actually thats an old chestnut. turkey is in europe all of it. its just our definition of where geophraphical europe is changed when the barbarians were at the gate so to speak. but the problem is that even if its false, the fact that most europeans think its true becomes the defacto defintion. turkey being european is an opinon thats largely the preserve of academics, particularly historians, especially medievil historians. remember modern turkey is the eastern roman empire.

DEVRIMCI2007 2 years ago
@DEVRIMCI2007:
1. Whether or not Greenland would have or wouldn't have joined if the moon were made of green cheese, this we can only guess.
2. Again, Iceland IS part of Europe, like it or not, and Turkey is to 96% part of Asia.
3. I couldn't care less about christianity, islam, etc. All I care about is human rights and common sense.
4. Whether you are integrated or not in Europe (which you are certainly not) is totally irrelevant to the issue.

Modernize the Muslims? ROTFL. Thanks a lot, I don't think Muslims need that, nor r they asking anyone to come & "modernize" them. I'd rather advise Mr. Zakaria 2 concentrate on "modernizing" himself&his family, &then c what happens ))))
