However, I was really annoyed by his cough-like breathing. There's not really any place for that in Shotokan.
This was definitely a tournament kata though, and I prefer traditional stylings by a long shot. It's certainly crisp, but IMO it lacks Kanazawa's beautiful flow and focus.
Finally, I prefer the old system, where we refer to this one as Gojushiho Sho. I believe that it's a better representation of the Gojushiho pairing.
@Larloch80 it's too fast and the technic is bad...he hasn't got stability, explosion and convincion... forgive me if i don't wrote well, but i'm a student
@Larloch80 sorry but i've just see the comment... anywhere, the kata is too fast and the technic is bad...he hasn't got stability, explosion and convincion... forgive me if i don't wrote well, but i'm a student
@Mrkarateboy1 No worry. Of course it is fast, there is some point I dislike. The overall look of that kata is good, without saying it's the best so far. Btw, english is not my first language, don't worry about your spell checking ;)
Bei der Stelle 1:10 hat er einen kleinen Patzer drinn, aber trotzdem ist die Kata sehr schwierig und jeder der die mal gelaufen ist weiß wovon ich rede. Sehr Lehrreich.
@redstatesrule back in the day we called them "paper tigers". maybe we need a new term now? i remember the old chinese proverb " the empty drum makes the loudest noise".
@MrByaeger possibly "keyboard tigers" the ferocity of their skill and knowledge only manifests itself when sat in front of one. i was taught once that a fool talks about what he has seen a wise man talks about the things he has done (not as fluid in English but the point still stands.)
I totally agree that every school does it differently, but I'm pretty sure not a single one is teaching that one should finish the kata 3 meters in front of the embusen. This is just lack of study or simply put, wrong execution. This is one big challenge in this particular kata, otherwise errors propagate over 54 steps result in what we just saw!
Well, I wouldn't call it outright poor, but I've seen A LOT better performances by people who never made it to any international competition. And yes, I also learned this kata as Gojushiho Sho years back, while all of the Shotokan belonged to the good old IAKF and was under the guidance of JKA and Nakayama Sensei. God, am i old !!! :)
He's got really great technique, and good stances too. But from what I can see, the reason he can do the techniques so fast is because he isn't tensing up at the end of the moves. =/
He is really sharp. Movement on tape aways looks so much slower than it feels but he looks fast even on video. Only one minor bounce in there. I thought this looked great. I just started working on this as my new kata and it is so difficult. Great job.
bonita forma , pero no tiene kime todo su kata es puro sonido con la respiración, no se nota explison en sus tecnicas, y su cadera no le da mayor uso. Os
Keep in mind that the kata is going to vary slightly from style to style, teacher to teacher, and dojo to dojo. Just because it isn't identical to the way you were taught it doesn't mean it is incorrect, or for that matter, poorly executed. Ever take into consideration that you may have been taught a different version before you criticize other people's katas.
ok...I said "almost"...almost mean not perfect. But this kata have a really good shape.
and see that balance...breaks my heart
I know he dont position correctly his ippon nukite...and he made other little mistakes but but I still think this is a beautiful kata.and I disagree with mike about his kime !
@CCBRFTATTHFF : it is a head butt- after escape from reverse bear hug and strikes to the ribs, you use the back of your head to butt his face as he reacts to the rib strikes- proper bunkai also has your butt pushing back at the same time as the rib strikes- thus his face/head is forward ready to be smashed by the back of your head.
because he lost his balance during the kata at 1:09 so i guess he must have thought he lost so there was no piont although he shouldn't think like that
oh yes.. i noted that. i agree with you, should be mentally strong from start to finish.. i always think the first bow and the last bow are the most important part of any kata.

L'ho apprezzato quasi quanto la nazionale femminile del Vietnam!

@Mrkarateboy1 I never said it was the best kata I ever seen. I only said it was a good kata.
Luca Valdesi is a great competitor, but I prefer by far Hideto Tsuchiya.

I think JKA and SKIF are somewhat different. This is our Gojushiho SHO... strange.
Nevertheless, what I think is poor is the fact that some people obviously can't deal with criticism. Nobody's perfect!

this gyu has excellent tech with power, u would find it when meeting him on tatami in real life. have a nice day ! oss.

He's got really great technique, and good stances too. But from what I can see, the reason he can do the techniques so fast is because he isn't tensing up at the end of the moves. =/

Not a head-butt...
It's an escape from a reverse bear hug while striking to the ribs
