I've flown from Orange County to Denver a couple times.. Whenever a plane takes off from SNA they go over the ocean because if they go the other way it's considered a residential area so it's "disturbing" people or whatever.
Take offs from SNA are generally over Newport Beach toward the Pacific Ocean because that's in to the wind. During Santa Ana Wind conditions take offs are in the opposite direction.

@moondoggie71 Oh ok, make sense. I've never seen a plane take off from SNA in the other direction over the 405 freeway, I'd like to see that.
