Hi! (Not too important but) actually the audio codec is not MP3. If you choose mp4 output in the camera, then AAC at 128kbps, if you choose the FullHD 'AVCHD' (.mts) then its the AC3 codec at 256kbps. I think the second option is much better.
yes, a normal stereo 3,5mm cable, but be sure to use a good cable (shielded), otherwise you'll end with a lot of noise, because of the DC output in the a55 mic connector..
The A55 has auto gain,so it's difficult to match the optimal input volume. Most of the time I get too much gain from the camera. the best way is to manually synchronize the camera and microphone's internal clocks and record separately. then when you edit the video you just search the matching audio file by "date modified".
