ALMA GLUCK (May 11, 1884 – October 27, 1938) was a Romanian-born American soprano, one of the world's most famous female singers at the peak of her career (circa 1910).
Beautiful, haunting, expressive singing by the great Alma Gluck! I love it and the other aria she recorded from the same opera. Thanks so much, Edmund.
Aren't they just beautiful? When I stop to consider that virtually the entire aria is without accompaniment, I am stunned. This is singing of an uncommonly high order.
@EdmundStAustell That's precisely what I find special about this song. It's almost entirely without accompaniment, yet the melody is so rich, expressive and beautiful. One doesn't miss any of those orchestrated refined melodies Rimsky-Korsakov could create, because with just one instrument (the voice) he created all the necessary atmosphere and sounds. Gluck's voice sounds particularly beautiful in this recording, especially her sweet and creamy higher register (and that sensitive approach!).

Thank you very much! Yes, you are right, it is a bit strange in German, but beautifully done. One of her famous recordings.

Beautiful recording, thanks a lot for posting. It's strange to hear it in German, but she sang so very expressively, that language doesn't matter.

It is a bit strange to listen to this aria in Deutsch, but she's singing with a real Russian sadness.

Indeed, Alma Gluck's vocal and dramatic range was great. And her Liubasha is extremely beautiful!
