It always saddens me that people get caught up in the drug aspect of his life never realizing it was - for him at least - a politicaly reactionary thing. To understand how Hunter died, you must first have to understand how he lived. He always lived outside of the lines printed on the page, and was always in control. At times this may have proven too difficult to digest for some, but his life was his to live. Through is unique outlook on the changing world, he taught us many great things. Nothing is ever cured, Matt. Simply because a pill exists does not mean that it fixes someone's problems. Thompson had sciatica, a bad hip/leg, combined with his age and the demands of his stardom. He couldn't keep up with his own life anymore, so he called the race. Prozac would not have helped, just like anti-depressants don't cure the vast majority of American citizens who are "depressed."
