  • minidisc players are great for recording bootlegs, rehearsals, concerts with microphone or line-in. but this video just manipulate the people's thinking. he just volume nano down. and volume md up! also every md lover hate the some series of md players which have low volume! i'm not ipod fan but they have decent sound quality.

  • Agreed, MiniDisc rules. Now what is that song?

  • ok. So if it's about sound, why wouldn't you stick with cds because MD lost that battle before it even started.

  • did you use the same source-file/cd for transferring to ipod and MD ?

i also stick to MD, got a creative zen too but it's total shit in comparison to what my MZ-NH700 can produce...

  • @Thepockets88 thats just your opinion,i got mine, leave it as that.

  • you obviously tampered with that(cuz even a cellphone with mp3 has better sound)& oh yeah, who obviously won that battle?exactly(i don't see people everywhere using md & making billions, mmmmmm, you beg to differ on a non-existent answer?)& that"song"was horrible(next time you decide to make a sound test use real music, not something thats just as bad as today's shit.)

  • @misereiko666

Just because formats are outdated doesn't mean that there better or worst. the mini disc did have a better quality of playback, it was outed for reasons not unlike the betamax. the discs could only hold so much, it was a proprietary system requiring you to have There hardware. they just lost the format war. even today i rock my minidisc player, along with my ipod.digital is the future but the oldies are still goodies :)

  • I use Minidisc player from 1996!

its way better than all this new Ipod Crap.

  • mini disc was great but is now really obsolete. Got my first in 98 and was loving the mixes I was making that sounded like cds, tracked like cds but took so much more abuse and I could put the player in my pocket. they are good backups for taping lectures or dictation but would much rather now have an ipod.

  • I used minidisc and HiMD for years, but finally had to give up on them when mine finally broke. Had to move on.

  • @lamewing

    fuck moving on.

    1990's forever.

    I use Minidsic.

  • k i seriously miss my md walkman

  • it also has a lot to do with the headphones you're using. Those white ones that come with the ipod SUCK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • use the digital output(the usb output thingy) for the ipod

  • As an I Pod and Mini Disc (MD) user I feel I can add my views - I think the MD often sounds better and of course allows you to record/edit almost everything, however the IPod is just so dammed clever if all you want is to record CD's or (paid for) downloads.

  • i love mini disc.. it's unique.. nice sound quality... but after my mini disc walkman dead 2 years ago.. i prefer my mp3 walkman better.. :D

  • my pod has all my music at 320 kbp/s mini disc only 272 kbp/s at 80 min a disk my ipod has 3400 songs on it ipod wins and get a better amp one that can handle bass lol

  • man i was doing a sound comparison between the sony e-series mp3 players and minidisc, and i must say throw some wav files on the e-series and it rapes the ipods and minidisc

  • ipod wins,ipod wins,ipod winsIPOD WINS<IPOD WINS<IPOD WINS

  • it's not capacity, it's all about reality and keepin it real!! FORT MINOR STYLES OF BEYOND, RYU!!, TAKBIR! SHE SHOCK

  • I remember being in LOVE with my Mini Disc player back in the day. I think it is a tactile thing. It's sooo satisfying :)

Anyway, I know the iPod does not support FLAC with the shipped firmware, but installing Rockbox cures the quality issue and even my phone and car stereo play FLAC... Even for a video from 2008, this is really walking a thin line between fanboyism and the truth. What gives guys?

  • @radicalgarbage02 To clarify before I get the arguments rolling in: Are you guys suggesting the DAC in the Minidisc is somehow better?

  • why i like mini disc? i just like the feeling when you push the disc in XD

  • @ryosvet

I appreciate this feature as well. it provides a nostalgic feel to a otherwise advanced musical toy

  • Removable media will always have the advantage of unlimited expansion.

  • you know why i just love minidisc...is that i got ALOT of them, like maybe 70 or so. and trying to get that all that music onto a mp3 player, well, that's gonna take up how much room? how many mp3 players?

i like the fact that i can just change disc. i dont want to have to sit thru a mp3 player for 10 minutes for something to listen to

besides, i would need a 16 or 32 gig mp3 player, that is just for Frank Zappa alone. i got 8 minidisc of his stuff already. but i could always use more.

  • man I loved minidisc...it literally felt like small vinyl in your pockets and the sound was incredible...I remember days in philly just zoning out to a perfect mix while on the train...perfect memories...too bad minidisc players are hard to come by because of mp3 players :(

  • I had a feeling the Mini Disk would triumph. Do Mini Disk verses ipod Touch, the touch sounds even worse than the Nano, in my opinion.

  • @mrmactknife On side note, you try walking about with 100 Mini Disk albums in your pocket LMAO

  • This comparison is meaningless unless the levels are matched, and the listener does not know which unit is playing.

  • Despite I own a iPod Touch 4th Gen. and a iPod Nano 5th Gen., MiniDisks look really cool even though it's technology from the early 90's. I really want to own one, but there hard to find these days!

  • thank you. yes. people seem to forget about sound quality these days. i use a cassette walkman myself since nice chrome or metal tapes recorded on a nice tape deck that is properly calibrated and biased and all sounds one million times better than even 320kbps mp3 files. even a normal bias tape sounds at least nine hundred and ninty nine thousand times better than garbage mp3 files. but it is hard to trump convenience in this age of fat assed lazy apparent deaffness. great video!

  • MINIDISC LO MEJOR!

  • minidisc is cool stuff...

  • minidisc has better sound no matter what

    ipod fan boys -.-

  • @MusicianKingOfMetal You realize this video and the songs are digitally added and aren't actually the iPod and Minidisc playing them, right? Especially considering it also depends on the song you put on the device :P

  • @MusicianKingOfMetal Not really, lossy MP3 at 224kbps is far more efficient than the ATRAC codec used for MD's. We bought MD's to avoid the cons of lossy compression and poor quality but Sony had to go and use a lossy algorithm. Otherwise it would have been a great way to make reliable digital recordings with great ease. Disappointing really.

  • @monty78pig I see your point but codec doesn't make everything. Hardware is important too. Even uncompressed PCM@24/96 can sound bad if played through poor circuits. I did the test yesterday in a shop that allows you to try headphones. With an iPod (3G) and a mp3@320 (good) file I couldn't tell the difference between a high end or a low end headphone (even the brilliant 500€ Sony MDR-X1000 sounded like shit). But with my old Sharp MD702 I could appreciate each model :)

  • @febed01 I must add that it was a 3G iPod. I don't know how good or bad today's iPods sound.

  • I just want to say, if you go around versus-ing iPods and MiniDiscs, firstly, thats a tired horse just look at the old vids responses^

Secondly, if you have an issue with one format, then its not for you. No need to convince people, there's nothing to gain, a waste of time. You just go with what fits your world, what you like, etc.

I love the MD format and love my Cowon S9... and my X series Walkman...

  • MiniDisc is the best for music :D FOREVER !!!

  • I remember when Best Buy was selling MiniDiscs. At the time, I thought they were going to be the next big format after cassette. Why didn't they catch on?

  • @DukeNukem2020 Sony sort of messed up on marketing in the USA. In other parts of the world, especially Asia and Europe they were a success. Using MD's today, in 2011 is more tedious. I own several but I'm spoiled by the fast search-selection and drag and drop of an iPod and go. I don't use an iPod for serious listening though, the D/A onboard are lackluster. Just noisy car use.

MiniDiscs on the other hand you have to love to fiddle, have patience to record like we did with cassettes waysback.

  • @wendileona I grew up with cassettes and recording with them(I was born in '84). I'm in no way spoiled like the new gen is(gaming for example, I grew up with the NES, dial-up, and AIR TV. You had to get real good money to have cable, higher speed internet, or Satellite TV, I remember those huge ass satellites in people's back yards). So I wouldn't mind changing the MDs since it would only take probably 3 seconds to do.

  • What kind of minidisc player is this one? I've got MZ-RH1 a silver one , but want to get this one so bad. =[

  • @TrueSegaFan I forget the model number of this MD but I know its a player only (non-recording) HiMD unit, one of the last ones, really nice one. Very modern and pro looking styling/design. Search HiMD units at minidisc dot org.

  • For me Quality is more than quantity.

I listen wit joy to an album is the paradise for me instead of having 64GB of music in mpfu*ck :D

If You like mp3 go !!

    I can't change minidiscs !!

  • @jojosansvoix I'm huge on MD's, been using them for years, but in 2011, due to lifestyle and work - its lossy/lossless. I have little time to sit and record MD's, their like records in that, you have to fiddle and dedicate a little time to them, not as bad as record babying though. MDs are fun to sit and play with on a lazy sunday with some nice earphone/headphones. ATRAC is also a form of compression...FYI.

  • Is This iPod nano 2G?

  • wow, I wasn't crazy about pods, because well,.. cost, but after this.. screw pods.

  • I'm no sony fan, never have been. but sony led the way for compressed audio with the minidisc. If it had been an mp3 device, things may have ended up very differently.

  • I need help with this. I was in a band that years ago used a full size mini disk machine for backing tracks. Worked very well. I bought one this year to use for tracks doing restaurant gigs. Unfortunately the one I bought went bazerk and started holding onto disks, so I sent it into Sony to fix. Of course they couldn't/wouldn't fix it and said they'd send me a refund, which of course I've not seen yet. NOW I have a replacement machine from a couple months ago. Was playing great but now.....

  • @Dizzyphan ......that I need to "record" some tracks, it's not recording. Everything lights up like it's recording, meters show it's recording, sound is coming through the headphones like it's recording, pause button is disabled so it's showing the time elapsing, but when I stop it, then try to play the new recording it's not there. I even put in an already recorded disk from the old machine and added a track, and now it comes up "blank disk". OMG??

  • @Dizzyphan I dare not send it to Sony....I'll never see it again, LOL. Any ideas from the MD experts here?

  • @Dizzyphan I really like the old 90's MD machines especially with the "auto pause" feature. I await any help you guys can come up with, heh.

  • @Dizzyphan the laser used for writing data to the disc is probably bad on it dependig on how old the unit is mines from '96 snd it is used daily and it still works they are pretty cheap on ebay.

  • I found it a pain to transfer music over to mini disc, itunes with an ipod made it much faster and user friendly. The sony software was a nightmare

  • No contest MD wins. Sony Mini Disc and their ATRAC music file system technology is superb. ipod is more popular not because of sound quality but because it is fashionable and because of a very effective advertising campaign. What let MD down in my opinion was the lack of good software support by Sony and the price of the MD technology at the time was relatively expensive. It's easier to transfer music to and from a Sony mp3 player.

Sony should improve the music format transfer flexibility.

  • If you bother to actually watch the video you will see that it's not really a comparison of the Ipod to Minidisc as a technology standpoint, it's a comparison of the sound quality of both units DAC converters.

I can't vouch exactly for the difference between these two models because one is using ATRAC data and one is using MP3 data which have different compression schemes.

I can say however that the DAC in my Sony MZ-RH1 will slaughter the DAC in my ipod 60 video. Both using the same mp3 file.

  • Comment removed

  • there is a difference because of the file a disc use it takes up more memory= better sound.

  • @darthbriboy Not neccesarily.I can produce a big file with a low quallity, and again a great quality soundfile in ACC+ format[which I believe is the best so far] not more than 1.5MB with CD quality.

  • I operate a full time wedding DJ service. Back in the 90's when MD debuted I converted from my heavy 400 CD case all songs to MD in a case no bigger than todays lap top case. The upswing too, EVERY song was labeled. No guessing, or reading CD covers hoping I cued it to the right song. We used full size players. I still use them sparingly today as a back up. Indestructible. Versatile. Used'em for a good 12 yrs. I have all the players. Just can't sell'em.

    Especially all the recorded discs!

  • Mam radioodtwarzacz Sony z minidisc w aucie i spisuje się naprawdę dobrze !

  • i still use the sony atrac discman which has good sound quality...

  • MP3 is fine for headphone on an ipod or mobile phone, i stick to MD & CD at home, also i transfer to MP3 in highest quality, just picked up my first MD hi fi seperate player, sounds great, cd`s & md`s are so cheap now, cant see the point of downloading compressed stuff

  • im sick of the shoddy ipod quality.. that i cant stand listening to my favourite albums on it. fair enough you can have a billion songs on it, but they will sound crap, and well theres no way im going to listen to a billion songs in a day. ....... so now i reverted back to my shiny Hi-MD player listening to PCM quality. done the comparisons, and it just pisses me off how flat the ipod sounds (using ALAC) compared to Hi-MD. the MD sound has proper stereo separation, everything just sounds rite.

  • MD system puts high demands on processing power and the converters so the MD units have better components inside than any other digital muisc players. It is the reason they sound so good and the reason they were so expensive, and ultimately, the reason why MD never really caught up in Europe. I still have them, use them and love them!

  • It's not about capacity, it's about sound. Great little vid. You either get MD or you don't. I understand the perceived versatility of iAnything. Don't care. ATRAC has always sounded better, every gen, every step of the way. I currently use one of my portables at work every day. Fact. I have 3 portables and 3 home decks (in diff rooms). Love MD, simple as that.

  • I HAVE SONY HI-MD AND DOWNLOADED SONGS FROM MY LAPTOP BUT WHEN I TRY TO PLAY THEM IT SAY NO TRACK....?HELP

  • The iPod is far more convenient, but that for me works against it. It's too easy to skip from track to track and album to album. It's just a huge mass of music files which sound perfect, but sterile.

With the MD player (in the car) I have to carefully select my album, then listen to it from beginning to end, appreciating each track. It's tactile. It's physical. The iPod is great as a 'walkman', but for use in the car or at home, I still use MD to 'enjoy' the music more!!

  • obviously doctored... only thing that sucks about the minidisc is the SONY legal department...

  • "Its about sound" u r right

well I use Sony NW-HD3 player which is like a hybrid of Md player and "Ipod" 20Gigs and MD sound quality...

  • Honestly just sounds louder. I had Sony mini disc player, and unless you are some audiophile the quality gain wasn't something terribly noticeable. It was there I admit, but really never made that much difference.

  • mini disc sounds better oops xD minidisc sounds beeessttt

  • Minidisc is for the collectors these days or for people who wanna do all kind of recordings with it..., but ipod is leader because of it's cappacity...

I also have a md recorder @ home, and also a md walkman, i don't buy md's no more, as i always use my ipod now as walkman, and as set all recorded stuff to mp3.

I re-use my md's again these days, only for recording a dj set ( of me ).

  • @Dreamerken Even the time when md seemd useless, when i did not mix, because i did not had a mixing deck, i could't not say goodbye to md.

It's still amazing to me, i just enjoy the cool options with it...: a-b erase, divide, combine...

Even the time in giving names, where quitte enjoyable...

But oh the time it takes to work on a minidisc then...

Well, it gives me more time now with ipod, and i still having short on time for all the music stuff and other stuff.

  • It's each to their own I think. I have a 160gb iPod classic with the majority of my collection copied in 'Lossless' format. This is collected to my hifi via TL audio 'Fatman' dock.

I also have a Sony MDS JE 500 connected to the same amp. For me, with normal hifi listening, the minidisc wins hands down!! Sounds so much better, despite me trying 3 different types of dock. When it comes to car, walking or listening in bed, I much prefer the iPod, so much more convenient!

  • As formats go, the AAC format used in iPods is superior to ATRAC. Mainly because it's newer and are building on the lessons learned when for instance ATRAC and MP3 was developed. However ATRAC have one advantage, it's designed to be very lenient on the CPU and RAM and therefore the batteries, making it a better choice for portables.

The main difference in this video is that the Minidisc players tended to have a far far superior D/A converter and output amplifier.

  • That was beautiful ...

  • Your video got me into performing what must be my allotted exercise for the WEEK, when I decided to dig out my two old MD's (MZ-R50 and MZ-R909), The R50 was broken, I already knew that, as it was missing a screw on the lid hinge, and it had a bad connection on the headphone jack. (Took it apart and fixed it, and and the lid)

You are right, comparing the MD with a similar recording off iTunes, It's like having years of grime and wax removed from the ears. Like a breath of fresh air.

    MD FTW!

  • MD = best format ever!

  • I'm tempted to do the same thing with an actual iPod--except that I'm not going to go out and buy something that requires that much space to have my music.

And, of course, I know that, if you encode at the same rate as a minidisk, you get the same quality. It has nothing to do with the disks themselves.

  • I love the flexibility of the Minidisc player compared to the iPod. Music in multiple formats, video playback, pictures, notes... and lets not forget all the accessories that are available. And you can find Minidiscs everywhere.

    Oh wait...

  • i love my mini disc!! its the best :-). the sound quality is excellent just like in the video. wicked video!

  • MD ruless

  • Mini discs ROCK!! i have many portable MDs. and a MDX690 incar system.

  • hey mdman....pls tell me the song from your video...thks

  • I have a Yamaha MD-8 8-track minidisc recorder that I'm really loving the quality of... oh and also I got a MD Walkman for 2 bucks and I'm lovin it! There's just something about it that's better than scrolling through menus on an ipod. And the discs are just so nice looking!

  • Comment removed

  • I have a nano and an MZ-N1 minidisk, the sound quality of the MZ-N1 is amazing, 10 times better than crappy apple.

  • you right!!!

  • Can you store lossless on MD these days?

  • @FuckingStanz: yes, of course.

  • @FuckingStanz: yes, you can.

  • Do love MD's, but that was the worst song I've ever heard.

  • Sharp also have ATRAC and Equal compression of MP3 players. The Sharp MD - MT821H is a top of the range minidisc player that sounds unbelievable. Beautiful machine. that I still use now.

  • I hav had both the IPod and Mnidisch {sharp MiniDisc-Mt821H}. The crystal clear clarity of the Minidisc is outstanding. Although the capacity is nowhere near that of an IPod, I still find myself using my MD everywhere I go. I record on it too. Yes, it may be yesterday's technology, but there are plenty of people out there {me included} that still love it.

  • somebody help me on how to put music on my minidisc player...please

  • Minidisc is still very popular in Japan where "listening clubs" allow members to sample CD's to minidisc and cassettes instead of buying the source. iPods are cool but I still enjoy my Minidisc. If I loose or have a minidisc stolen (it's happened), it costs far less than the iPod.

  • minidisc

  • I'm an ardent minidisc supporter (AND I like my iPod), but this video demonstrates nothing.

  • no way MINIDISC IS THE WORLD BEST SOUND EVER DSP-TYPE R no comparaison whith IPOD

  • I don't think the MD player has better sound quality, but it's cooler than the iPod (because of the cartridge you have to insert into it).

  • Audiophile? ATRAC always sounded like shit compared to other codecs.

  • I was an early adopter now I returning to Minidisc. I found my cache of MDs and set out to buy a player....boy has things change. I went with a MZ-N510 to test the waters then I landed an M10. Wished I had did a little more searching I would have preferred a M200 or at least just M100 because it easier to see the info in low-light.

  • MP3's sound good enough for me.

  • Wow i have just bought a sony mini disc player because i am tired of the mp3 crap i have listend to ,for too long ,awesome video my friend awesome sound from the md

  • It's a personal choice these days. Sony MD have amazing digital processors! ATRAC @ equal compression of MP3 also sounds better. Good for audiophiles, not so practical for most consumers. Solid state memory is now affordable & the diversity of compression formats available provides good to studio lossless sound on portable players such as the Cowon S9, Samsung P3, SONY X series & others. Modern MP3 players also offer the convenience of speed and color screens.

  • at least md is something personal you can label!

    instead of zombiepods

  • I'm tired of scrolling menu's and using my fingers spreading stuff, pulling menu's up and down like an idiot on my ipod. I'm going full on into MD again. Eff iPod nano-touchy-scrolly-menus.

  • dont use that outdated crap

get a sony walkman or creative zen!

  • I have MDs and iPod, but unless the music is ripped loseless from a CD don't mp3 all sound the same (bad) because I've compressed them into a mp3?

  • i'll stick to my iPod and PSP. both MD and iPod sound the same but MD has a capacity of 160mb per MD cart wheres the iPod has 2GB 4GB up to 80 gigs. more capacity and no switching of media just hit next track. but i may get a MD recorder/player to record stuff but I can just get a digital recorder that records to mp3 and mounts like a flash drive.

  • @coondogtheman1234

"both MD and iPod sound the same"... ?? Don't even bother commenting here if you feel that way. :P

  • @minidiscman

That isn't a fair comparison. The iPod is capable of the same quality as even the best-quality Hi-MD discs.

In theory, listeners can upload uncompressed LPCM audio (2ch/16bit/44.1kHz) on both systems. In practice, most listeners upload lossy MP3 files to their iPods, and lossy ATRAC files to their MD players. What are the key differences then? While only MD players can record audio, iPods currently hold up to 160GB (160 Hi-MDs) and can be updated to support 2ch/24bit/96kHz audio.

  • @coondogtheman1234 whot he fuck has time to fill up 80 gigs of music?

  • @SuperGilberto1977

just select a shitload of songs and drop it in itunes or just sync it. but I prefer drag and drop in windows. and itunes isnt needed for organization of songs. disney proved that with their mix max player.

  • @coondogtheman1234

Have you ever heard of hi MD? I just ordered one, and it's on its way!

  • @coondogtheman1234 2 words: HI MD.

also, if you think that way, you get half ass quality

  • @dodgeballwhiz

let's try the drop test see what keeps playing Flash based ipod or MD with moving parts. there will be some day when that MD wont play b/c a part is worn out but an iPod will keep kickin. you can record at high bitrates and probably get the same sound quality

  • @coondogtheman1234 Minidiscs sound better than an iPod, and HiMD have 4.7gigs of storage room. Some people can even change the storage capacity of HiMD's up to 200gigs

  • @coondogtheman1234 No worries. MD aint for everyone. BTW, the current Minidiscs are 1Gb and hold about 30 albums. Sure, they've got their shortcomings but they're the best thing I've found for recording *and* editing. ;-) Cheers.

  • @only1funkmother I can hold many times more albums with an iPod and it all fits in my pocket. I have never used them for recording, i'd prefer solid state devices b/c they are more reliable like digital voice recorders that interface with a PC like a flash drive. minidisc units have too many moving parts to wear out and damage. and HDD based iPods can be fitted with Tarkan HDD to CF adaptors with compactflash cards, making them even more reliable.

  • @coondogtheman1234 - If you're careless and heavy handed an MD can break down. But even with serious pro use for recording interviews, you know, media use, they still are pretty darn tough, them recorders. MD's dont really wear out like cassette player heads do. MD actual discs are super strong, try breaking one, they were designed to seriously protect the internal discs. iPods tend to break down after a year or two even with minimal normal use, awful quality because of the designs.

  • @wendileona

if you mod an iPod with a flash card it won't break down. and there are other devices that can record and play music/sounds that use flash memory and will work as good as a MD. you like MD I'm glad. Flash memory is just my preference.

  • still love MD

  • sony still makes minidiscs, you can call a umd (that plays in a psp 3000) a minidisc that plays games and movies ,

  • @jupiterscastle sure, but what's your point? They are still not interchangeable, and once again Sony shot themselves in the foot with a dead proprietary format.

  • @minidiscman what about hi-MDs?

  • Actually UMDs are a different type of medium. Minidiscs were a high capacity CD where as minidisc is a 1.3GB capacity DVD. I used to love Minidisc and even had an in-dash player in my car. But that was before MP3 and I even had an MP3 Minidisc player but it sucked as an MP3 player. It worked nicely for just straight music though. But no sound quality and capacity go hand and hand. So I choose MP4/MP3 players now. iPod Touch and ZuneHD are my 2 choices that I've got now.

  • @jupiterscastle Yeah, but what about music? Sure, they play mp3, but that's not as good. I'm surprised you think this way, wspecially after seing this video. Anyways, you can get blank MDs for next to nothing when you look in the right place. THey're rewritable.

  • @jupiterscastle Yeah, but what about music? Sure, they play mp3, but that's not as good. I'm surprised you think this way, wspecially after seing this video. Anyways, you can get blank MDs for next to nothing when you look in the right place. They're rewritable. Anyways, if I'm wrong, let me know. I still want a minidisc player cause I don't have a psp.

  • @jupiterscastle Ummm, that aint really a Minidisc. Sure, you can call it a mini... disc but it's not a Minidisc. ;-)

  • Vinyl is the way I'm going

    Vinyl Vinyl Vinyl

  • @jupiterscastle - Vinyl to MiniDisc - even better!

  • @jupiterscastle I was into vinyl before it was on vinyl.

  • @jupiterscastle you're funny :))

  • @jupiterscastle yes, but vinyl isn't portable, MD is ;P

  • @jupiterscastle I like vinyl for collection purposes. However, I see where you are coming from.

  • i like the part where you fade out the ambient background noise and the hum of the computer fan right after you multitracked the edited sound in at :12

    nice editing dumbshit

  • @naireland I never said this was a true, accurate test... its more figurative. Any person with brains and ears should have been able to tell that it was merely a difference of and EQ effect for sake of a point. 'dumbshit'? Why so personal?

  • @minidiscman Because it means you were lying, which makes you bad person.

You're trying to imply that there is a difference, but you did so dishonestly. Not even advertisers are allowed to do that.

You shot your own self in the foot by lying, thus making people thinlk that the difference was only because you manufactured it.

And as long as you try to convince people by lying, you deserve to be called whatever you get. Lying makes you an immoral person.

  • Mp3 is suck!!

  • what model is that Mini Disk Recorder?

  • @Fwlgore

    MZ-NH3D

  • Just some treble difference that can be caused by a lot of things... probably on purpose, by you. Anyway. In response to the description, regardless of the video:

I decide to ignore iPods simply because they're not worth their price. I choose a simple, good quality flash player (like Sansa Clip) for listening and a Hi-MD recorder (RH-10 or RH-1) for recording. Very practical and affordable.

  • good video but the music is gay. i don't care about the audio quality when the song sucks ;)

  • RIP no more MINIDISCKS on the market ! SONY took them out of sale!

  • If you mean your average walk-in store by "market", you are correct. But you can find PLENTY of miniDISCS online. Ebay, Amazon, and other places. They'll be around still for quite a while, and not just Sony brand.

  • Just bought my Mz-rh1 the sound is just amazing the sound explode all stuff i've got (cowon d2 and others sony stuff) with my audio-technica ck7 it's so good so the king is dead hail to the king

  • i would have a minidisc over an ipod anyday of the week.

    thats right, i already do.

ipods are shit, remember this in a few years when they are obsolete and no longer working.

  • What is the name of the song?

  • "Stickin it to the Man" by Tiny Masters of Today

  • Unfortunately, it's the convenience of the iPod I like too. My 80Gb classic holds enough music to keep me entertained in the car, without loads of disks. I rip to it in aiff, which is much easier on the ear than mp3, but aac & Apple lossless are better than wma. I don't pretend the quality is good - believe me, I have a high end hi-fi system and I know the difference! I am an analogue records man, myself. MD, CD and other digi formats are not a patch on vinyl.

  • I hear you,Loud & Clear! Musician vs.Audiophile

You said something that I've heard many people

say ..Vinyl blows digital audio out of the water.I'd

like to hear a comparison of Dark Side Of The

Moon on LP and CD.Unfortunately,I don't have a

turntable! Oh boy! Ebay..here I come!

  • The actual sound of the iPod is not too bad, provided you upload songs onto it in aiff or wav format. The headphone output of the iPod is very weak, compared to cassette walkmen, MD's etc... and that can lead to deception - louder often appears better. We weren't told how loud these players were set to either. At least with iPod/MP3 players you can control the amount of compression applied. With MD you can't. Having said that I like my Sony hifi MD player a lot.

  • Actually you CAN control the amount of compression with MD... there's advanced ATRAC LOSSLESS with Hi-MD. Not sure what version of Sonic Stage you're using but you should download the latest (4.3).

  • You have a point about the deception of volume levels but keep this in mind; I believe it is only recent that iPod finally has custom EQ settings and gapless playback (something MD has had for ages) - at any rate, I tried an iPod with lossless/wav ripped material and it still sounded very stale and flat, and not due to volume level - as I even ran it through my car, amped. But the bottom line is what works for one person's ears will be different to another.

  • Plus the unfortunate fact that the majority of peeps today (especially youth) could care less about quality.

  • I agree that a lot of people couldn't care less about quality. Not necessarily the yoof, though! The biggest (IMHO) hindrances to good quality these days are 1) Compressed music files, as downloaded on the net. This will eventually lead to the demise of availability of music on a physical format. 2) Compression applied at the mastering stage of CD's, which leads to all music on the CD sounding flat and LOUD, the "loudness war". You should visit my channel. I have some serious hifi equip!

  • A lot of us older types grew up listening to pop-music on Medium Wave stations playing on transistor radios (Radio Luxembourg anyone?). Caring less about music quality is certainly nothing new.

  • Not bad,but BAD if you're a musician.I could have

bought an Ipod when they first came out.Instead,I

bought 3 Sony Net MD Recorders,a deck & small

player off of Ebay. The software sucks & I use the

Real Player to convert songs. For live in the field

recording, the player works great! Sorry Ipod!

  • dhamn............ and if you got a ''recordable minidisc'' you'r able to get music from any source when it is not possible with the ''i cock''
