its a shame. i know martin. he used to teach at Access to music but after he slept with one of the younger students, had a breakdown and ruined his marriage he turned into a nasty man... shame really..
Band I was in played support for them once in Berlin. We drank their wine, they lent me their spare amplifier since mine broke down minutes before the gig. Great guys, and they played a fantastic show. Always loved this song.
Olympian is one of my favourite LPs all time too. Unfortunately, Gene always suffered from this comparison with The Smiths, which was very unfair as they had their own very british style too, but in another way. Brilliant melodies and lyrics (Olympian or Where Are They Now for instance) they played a sophisticated, refined music that deserved much more than being placed in league 2 of pop music
Get Loaded in the Dark hits the Coronet on Thursday 1st April 2010 and is set to be another sell-out episode!
The incredible Black Grape will headline their first ever Live Show since 1997, including amazing performances from The Sunshine Underground, Young Fathers, Jakwob and Grum!

You're quite right Lewis...you learn something everyday...for years I've thought they were from Manchester and it appears they hail from Wales...although they formed in London....Cheers thanks for that Man !
Your're a week late mate....see below....but thanks for the pointer !....and a little pedantic about the Manc bit lol....are you a teacher or traffic warden
I saw them live twice also. Once at the Honey Club, once at the Brighton Centre, East Wing. Fabulous band live. I used to see Martin Rossiter around Brighton all the time, usually in the Lewes Road Sainsburys pushing a pram!
Yeah one of the truely timeless bands of the nineties!! A car that sped still sends shivers up my spine when i hear it!! I saw them at Reading festival 96, and they stood out from everyone(so did the stone roses but for the wrong reasons).
totally agree with ya mate, only recently startin listenin to oylmpian again forgot how good your love it lies and a car that sped etc,etc were. top album top band!
They pulled me in with that similarity, but it didn't take long to see they were very different. One of my favorite bands of the 90s. Martin is great. Can't wait for his solo project.
Coincido contigo. Tanto Gene como The Smihts tienen temas como este que ya forman parte de mi vida y me llegan muy al fondo. Eso es música. Un saludo.
Its sad that ppl think that just because a new(er) band sounds like a legend band/musician, they iummediately label it as a "rip off". If thats the case, then every band that was inspired by the beatles are rip offs (since ppl use the word so loosely). They fail to see that its an homage. GENE is plain and simple a lovely band with unique ballads. Other bands that "happen" to sound like Morrisey are: Smoking Popes, Trash Can Sinatras -- these bands pay tribute to their predecessor.
i remember they got trashed by nme for being copying the smiths, At a time when oasis and blur were copying the beatles and pulp and suede were copying bowie. Shame because gene deserved better
Aww, if only I could whisk myself back to 1995...for 3mins I almost was :) thanks for that, superb, from one the best 'under rated' bands of all time...happys days!! still haunted by you guys :)

Fucking love these guys. Such a shame they weren't successful enough to keep going.
We owe them. This is a proper British sound, with a lot of subtelty and depth, largely absent from some of their more successful counterparts.
