  • its a shame. i know martin. he used to teach at Access to music but after he slept with one of the younger students, had a breakdown and ruined his marriage he turned into a nasty man... shame really..

  • That beast of a bassist is my tutor at college

  • my name is gene and i was born in 1995 =0

  • Band I was in played support for them once in Berlin. We drank their wine, they lent me their spare amplifier since mine broke down minutes before the gig. Great guys, and they played a fantastic show. Always loved this song.

  • They did four albums. And Steve Mason always had shit hair!

  • never thought gene sounded like the smiths! :P

  • saw these guys twice - utterly brilliant live, 10 times better than their recorded "vibe"

Haunted By You, Olympian, London Can You Wait, This One's For The Dead, all fabulous. I still cherish my autographed (by the whole band) CD

  • used to play gene nonstop between moz's new releases. good memories:)

  • i love martin rossiter. thanks!

  • Lead singer looks like a taller Caully McCulkin. Great song, great year, great memories!

  • I know the singer of this band :)

  • @moonmanxs

ask him if any more plans,,,,yeah i loved them,, did they do anymore albums,,,??

  • @boycemike they did 5 or 6 albums, I think. Although I'm not sure

  • @moonmanxs where they from??

  • @boycemike probably from liverpool, all good bands come from liverpool. xD

  • @boycemike They're from London

  • @walleyrange thought martin was from cardiff?

  • Love this single. Thanks for the video!

  • morrisey ;$

    eso parecen

  • Martin Rossiter was compared to Morrissey- but there is no comparison- Mozza does it better !!

  • class act. saw their last gig in london. thanks for posting!!!

  • Very The Smiths!!! Wonderfull

  • another "wannabe Smiths" brit pop band with beautiful sound though..

    reminds me of my youth

  • wally

  • shit ... totally shit...about time..

  • this band were the most important thing to me in 95 and 96, more so than blur, and i fuckin love blur!

  • The lead singer (Martin Rossiter?) REALLY wants to be Mozza. So do I though. Excellent band, great record

  • Olympian is one of my favourite LPs all time too. Unfortunately, Gene always suffered from this comparison with The Smiths, which was very unfair as they had their own very british style too, but in another way. Brilliant melodies and lyrics (Olympian or Where Are They Now for instance) they played a sophisticated, refined music that deserved much more than being placed in league 2 of pop music

  • @"Her fifteen years " is up there with anything by The Smiths probably the best song The Smiths never wrote

  • christ - gene are f****** brilliant. well pleased

  • i think they sound like The Smiths

  • @podmoskovnoff Yes - they were billed as 'The new Smiths' by much of the UK music press when they came out...

  • great album and great band

  • ME ENCANTA GENE!

  • Great band,Great memories..

  • WICKED ! wish this sound was still around today, music nowadays is kinda bland in comparison to this. Great band

  • One of my favourite albums of all time!

  • Fucking love these guys. Such a shame they weren't successful enough to keep going.

We owe them. This is a proper British sound, with a lot of subtelty and depth, largely absent from some of their more successful counterparts.

  • Saw them live twice in Dublin circa 1995/96 - best gigs ever; will always love this band!

  • Wow... that reminds me of many many many parties!

  • Like the track and vid.....

  • remenber the greats moments in the university and born of my son.

  • Top Mank band....there have been many hidden gems.....Marion...Elbow....Puressence....Vini Reilly...John Cooper Clarke...James

  • Mank??? Think you might be confused....

  • You're quite right Lewis...you learn something everyday...for years I've thought they were from Manchester and it appears they hail from Wales...although they formed in London....Cheers thanks for that Man !

  • They are from Watford

  • Thats 'Manc', and Gene are not Manc.

  • Your're a week late mate....see below....but thanks for the pointer !....and a little pedantic about the Manc bit lol....are you a teacher or traffic warden

  • Puressence fuckin rule!

  • Saw them twice live, great stuff

  • I saw them live twice also. Once at the Honey Club, once at the Brighton Centre, East Wing. Fabulous band live. I used to see Martin Rossiter around Brighton all the time, usually in the Lewes Road Sainsburys pushing a pram!

  • class.

  • I have met Martin Rossiter, he's a cool man!

  • it's great !!!!

    90s had something awesome

  • Yeah one of the truely timeless bands of the nineties!! A car that sped still sends shivers up my spine when i hear it!! I saw them at Reading festival 96, and they stood out from everyone(so did the stone roses but for the wrong reasons).

  • sat on a beach in Crete for 2 weeks '95, listening to nothing but this and the rest of the Olympian album. Just brilliant . . .

  • Oh my...

  • I love this band... they are one of best (pardon my sounding like a total fool)bands of this millineum... yes i went there...

  • your chance has gone,

    you're not so strong,

your tongue it cannot harm me now...

  • The first album of theirs I still listen to all the time. One of my favourite bands not too far from the smiths.

  • totally agree with ya mate, only recently startin listenin to oylmpian again forgot how good your love it lies and a car that sped etc,etc were. top album top band!

  • Steve Mason is still the most beautiful man in pop! How gorgeous is he in this video?

  • Gene!

I love this band. They are Smithesque, yet so different.

  • They pulled me in with that similarity, but it didn't take long to see they were very different. One of my favorite bands of the 90s. Martin is great. Can't wait for his solo project.

  • What's hi solo project about? And when is it expected to be released?

Remember them 3 years ago in Manchester... One of the best gigs in my life.

  • con la recomendación de alpurod quedé con las babas colgando

  • Me alegro :) Saludillos

  • Its sad that ppl think that just because a new(er) band sounds like a legend band/musician, they iummediately label it as a "rip off". If thats the case, then every band that was inspired by the beatles are rip offs (since ppl use the word so loosely). They fail to see that its an homage. GENE is plain and simple a lovely band with unique ballads. Other bands that "happen" to sound like Morrisey are: Smoking Popes, Trash Can Sinatras -- these bands pay tribute to their predecessor.

  • i remember they got trashed by nme for being copying the smiths, At a time when oasis and blur were copying the beatles and pulp and suede were copying bowie. Shame because gene deserved better

  • Me encanta esta cancion, junto con Olympian y Fighting fit, las mejores. Me gusta la mirada en el minuto 3:19, ufff

I love the way he see at the camera at minute 3:19. So handsome! The best song (with Olympìan and Fighting fit)

  • love dis tune x

  • OMG Can't believe this video is up! I Love these guys so much!! Brings me right bak to 1995!! Awesome for posting this! thanks!! GENE RULES!!

  • Since the first time i heard this song I know that i will like this band...!!! Gene you will sound always on my stereo...

  • Aww, if only I could whisk myself back to 1995...for 3mins I almost was :) thanks for that, superb, from one the best 'under rated' bands of all time...happys days!! still haunted by you guys :)

  • wow i felt the same thing! 1995 was a magical year in my life. i am glad bands like gene provided such a great soundtrack to those times...
