  • What is this used for?

  • lol what is methylated spirits

  • It's just another name for Methanol also known as Methyl alcohol. A different type of alcohol, Ethanol or Ethyl alcohol is the type of alcohol found in alcoholic beverages as well as E85.

  • @TheCircle000 Actually methylated spirits is mostly ethyl alcohol with just a very small amount of methanol added to stop people drinking it.

  • That is SO cool. I have been trying to make a simple pulse jet from cans and I have gotten nowhere. Amy advice like what size can and what sizw hole?

    Thanks

  • Thanks for your comment. If you click the "more" link in the description on the top right there are full details. I'm thinking of selling this one, so stay posted. I started off with a honey jar, with about 5mm of methylated spirits in the bottom, and a smooth, burr-free hole about 10mm in the lid.

You will have to experiment. Be careful!

  • yes, i have been doing the same, im using metholated spirits and trying beer cans, normal tins but i cant keep it going for more than 5 seconds, plz help.

  • i bet if the exhuast tube or whatever it is called was smaller there would be more thrust do to smaller size

  • Possibly, but it would be unstable. These engines aren't for thrust, but for making heat from the fuel in a very efficient way. Decreasing the aperture size to gain thrust would also increase the exhaust velocity, which would make it very inefficient. These engines are very, very efficient, due partly to the very low exhaust velocity. It allows the fuel to be burnt, then burnt, then burnt some more before finally exiting as exhaust. They like to perform under low exhaust velocity.

  • @ScottTheCoffeeGeek Is that thermodinamically confirmed, or only you think that. I've never seen any heater working with this method. Btw nice Reynst combustor i've also tried to make pulse jet from steel, but I failed.

  • If it does it would be measured in grams! It is really only a heat engine. Applications would be for heating water, making steam for motive/electricity generation, etc

  • Damn man that is a really good engine! I've been experimenting with tin cans and have been sorta successful (I've got vids posted if your interested). I think my problem is not enough water, I'll have to find a way to weigh down the can. During one one of my better runs the bottom half glowed red (this was in about a cm of water as well) So your engine must be damn hot. You came to the same conclusion as me in that lack of cooling=rich. Only mine takes about 10 sec to go out without cooling lol.

  • Is the water only for cooling? I to have made a "jam jar jet" but using a tin can coz they don't explode!

  • The water keeps it cool, stopping too much fuel vapourising because that causes the engine to become fuel-rich and go out. Water makes it run much longer.

  • has anyone even ever tried to make it push something or make something work?

  • That's really impressive, but I have some questions:

    > how big is the tank?

    > how big is the hole/chimney?

    > what fuel do you use?

    > how do you add the fuel?

Basically, how did you make it?

  • Thanks for your questions. I have updated the description.

  • Brilliant, thank you.

  • where it is?

  • that it awesome it lasts for ages. im gonna try that one!
