I had the happy pleasure of watching AA play on Centre Court, Wimbledon in 1999, a month after he won the French (and completed his career Grand Slam). It was just an early round match but I was transfixed by his skill and technique and how much he loved that game.

Same here. I would watch tennis at anytime and anyplace just to see him play. Those times and players were unbelievable. What a cast of tennis characters, many great. Andre's heart was the thing I remember about him the most. His tennis playing was secondary.

Pete missed the key fact. Andre became the number one male player in the USA at age 18, as a senior in high school age. It had never been done before. Never been done since!

That is so true. Pete may have won more slams, but Andre made people care more. Watching him play was a roller-coaster ride and he made a connection with the fans as a result. I don't think most people really care how many slams a player wins. Keep in mind, Arthur Ashe won "only" 3 grand slam titles. It's more a question of whether they enjoy watching the person play. Agassi was always interesting to watch. Pete, eh.

Agassi was like the Millennium Falcon: prone to breakdown, but if everything was working, the fastest ship in the galaxy. You never knew what you were going to get. If Andre was on his game, he was a magician. He struck the ball so early, inside the baseline, with power and accuracy, so he could hit groundstroke winners that no other player on the tour could match. But he was psychologically brittle and prone to collapse. You never knew which Agassi would be on court.

The simple fact of the matter is that Federer hasn't lost at a slam to anyone outside the Top 5 since Roland Garros 2004. How's that for consistency? And how's 22 consecutive grand slam semis for consistency? Next best is 10 by Laver and Lendl.

Federer meanwhile has beaten finalists like roddick (1 slam only) and hewitt (2), but plays jokes like gonzales or baghdatis in finals (both who will never win slams). The same goes for roddick and hewitt, who despite winning 1/2 slams respectively, were winning in a void during a tennis downslump with no real challengers around.

A good way to judge a tennis player is WHO he beats when he wins slam finals. By quality I mean how many grand slams they have....Sampras had to consistently beat players who had won slams (agassi, courier, chang, becker, ivanisevic, mcenroe, edberg), and he caught the tail end of the past generation and the full onslaught of the american era....I think most people agree (and sampras said this himself) that sampras played in a much tougher era of opponents.

I think you have some good points. For me it's a bit simpler. Who dominated their rivals in their era. You can't really compare eras. That makes Laver the greatest, and why Federer will never be considered the greatest, because he has been dominated by Nadal who's not that much younger.

That's one way. Another way is to look at the quality of players they lose to in slams -- no way is Pete even in Federer's neighborhood in this department.

Pete's era was tougher, but not that much tougher -- Fed is a threat on all surfaces, while Pete annually had early exits from the French after 1995 and never even made a French final. Plus Pete's only wins in Australia (94 and 97) were when Agassi didn't play there.

Safin at his best, is awesome no doubt. his match vs federer @ Aus open was simply brilliant. but do u mean to say that in the last 5 years, that was the only time he played his best ?? as far as hewitt goes, just c USOpen 05 final..al i have to say. Its US Open 2004, where Fed raped Hewitt 7-6, 6-0, 6-0. 2005 US Open was Fed v. Agassi and Fed won in four sets.

guys like Hewitt & Safin have beaten Agassi & Sampras in big tournaments.{ check out some Sampras v Safin matches on youtube} Sampras himself said that Hewitt & Safin were future champions. but just cause Fed's kicking their asses, suddenly they're not good enough.

That was when hewitt and safin were at their best when they beat sampras.. have u seen safin at his best against federer? and hewitt trashing naldbandian (who has beaten roger many times)in wimby? competition are great today...too. And finally federer show that he is human afterall. I don't think we need to compare all of them... Sampras, Agassi and Federer.. All great players... =)

hey just cause Federer has dominated his era so well, does'nt mean that the rest of the players in todays day are not as good as b4. today you have more than double the amount of professional tennis players in the world. the money is more & so the attraction to sport is more too, which means the competition is more.

I don't discount Federer's genius, but the fact is, the top 10 players of today are not as good as the top 10 players of the late 80's and all of the 90's. Most of today's don't play the big points as well, don't volley as well, and just don't have the kind of game that can take Federer's awesome timing away. Therefore, if Federer played in the 80's and 90's I have no doubt he wouldn't have won as many as 12 slams.
