  • I know very little about this art. Only read an article or two on it. Very Intrigued to see this episode.

  • Comment removed

  • this was brought to the Shaolin Monastery in China together with Zen Buddhism by an Indian monk named Bodhidharma

  • HAR HAR MAHADEV

  • all hail great badidama!

  • King Ambhi, ruler of Taxila, surrendered

conquer all the headwaters of the indus river

    kicked the ass of Porus

conquered south all the way down the indus to the indian ocean

THAT is what indians claim as beating Alexander.

  • wow its very similiar to pencak silat :o

  • 5:40

thought I was watching survivor and UFC @ the same time

AWESOME to see how far some of these 'modern' style REEALLY go back

  • wtf india had 42 towns and each had 100.000 warriors.. and alexander with 20.000 conqeured 3 of them and then died by fever.. clearly greek had superior martial arts//(wrestling)

  • @duckdodgerss indians lie to themselves all the time about how the Greeks kicked their asses despite such a small force.

they also lie about the aryans going into india as foreigners. lie how the mughals were not from central asia. british is where it stops. they arent dumb enough to say british werent foreign conquerers.

  • is it just me or does this martial art really look primitive and somehow underdeveloped, compared to Chinese / Japanese / Korean ones?

The kicks seem half way done, same for the punches, they seem incomplete somehow, lazy even :)

  • oh, and alexander curb stomped every indian kingdom he faced. despite losing much of his army crossing mountains. his men were the ones who wanted to stop.

and even going back Alexander was subjugating indian kingdoms.

go wiki GREEK CONQUESTS of India

  • Phillip Zarrilli, a professor at the University of Exeter and one of the few Western authorities on kalari payat, estimates that the art dates back to at least the 12th century CE. The historian Elamkulam Kunjan Pillai attributes the birth of kalari payat to an extended period of warfare between the Cheras and the Cholas in the 11th century CE.

  • Kalari TRUTH:

In Sangam, Kalari was not used as a martial act according to dick Luijendijk, a researcher at the university of Nijmegen. "Kalari" is a centre of learning in Kerala. they taught language, math etc. later on, there were fight schools, thats what "payattu kalari" means.

  • 7. So in conclusion, there was kung fu before shaolin. There was shaolin kung fu before bodhi. The creation of the animal styles is documented, no bodhi. The one source that credits bodhi is faulty and the author of that one preface was viewed as an “IGNORANT VILLAGE MASTER”

    The End, dreams over.

  • 6. Sinews Changing Classic: Scholars disregard this preface because it has many anachronistic mistakes and the fact that popular fictional characters from Chinese literature, including the "Bushy Bearded Hero" (虬髯客), are listed as lineage masters. In fact, Ling Tinkang (1757-1809), a SCHOLAR of the QING Dynasty, described the author (Li Jing) as an “IGNORANT VILLAGE MASTER”

  • 5. The painting in Shaolin does NOT depict bodhi teaching shaolin monks. It actually only shows many shades of monks, all wearing Chinese clothes, practicing kung fu. Leave it to dreamers to think anyone who is a shade darker than light is Indian. Even if they were, no indication whatsoever about bodhi. PLUS the painting was done a THOUSAND years after bodhi’s time. It CANNOT be used as an indication of the past.

  • 4. The ONE place that credits bodhi is discredited: ONLY the PREFACE of the 1800s VERSION of the Yijin Jing mentions Bodhi with kung fu at all. Historians (like Tang Hao, Xu Zhen and Matsuda Ryuchi) discredit this preface because it is FULL of INACCURACIES. Even getting the Emperor Reigns wrong.

  • 3. Creation of 5 animal kung fu styles is documented, NO BODHI: Jueyuan was a master of the 18 Luohan Hands. the original 18 techniques of Shaolin. He expand to 72, but wanted to do more. He travel to Gansu Province to the city of Lanzhou and met Li Sou. He was a master of Hong Quan. they work with Bai YuFeng and expand the 72 techniques to around 170. Those 170 techniques were than divided into the 5 animal forms.

  • 2. Shaolin kung fu predates bodhi: The 2 men who became the VERY FIRST Shaolin monks were ALREADY experts in kung fu. Shaolin kung fu came from them. ("History of Chinese Martial arts: Jin Dynasty to the Period of Disunity") Also, they found weapons in the monestaries of Chang'an. ("Martial arts Myths of Shaolin Monastery, Part I: The Giant with the Flaming Staff") Suggesting the monks already practied martial arts.

  • Pure Facts that destroy delusional dreamers:

    1. Kung Fu predates shaolin: Spring and Autumn Annals of Wu and Yue, the Bibliographies in the Book of the Han Dynasty and the Records of the Grand Historian all document martial arts that predate Shaolin. A good example is Shuai Jiao, grappling martial art.

  • India is the origin of the eastern martial arts as we know them today, but there are many older martial arts from around the world that have been lost to time. And for the record Alexander did defeat the Indian army and captured their king you retard!

  • You can tell that it is a very old animalistic style. Lots of passion and huge arching strikes. It's like they are swinging for the fences on every blow. Lots of telegraphing.

  • Kalari was the first martial arts of all the world. Kung Fu Tse took it to china.

  • only sad part...is that white people do not reconize there own art.

Indians preserved the Anchient Greek fighting art.

    Achilles fought like this.....

  • @kenshin420jj Also achiles learnt from the indians about martial art.

  • kalari i say is a good self defence because it is mostly defending from armed people

  • part 3

so not only did the FIRST 2 shaolin monks already know kung fu, not only was there chinese MA BEFORE kalari.

but last but not least, the ONE source that give bodhi credit, is the PREFACE of the 1800s VERSION of the Yi Jin Jing (not in the YJJ itself). This preface is also full of errors. Martial Arts Historians Tang Hao, Xu Zhen and Matsuda Ryuchi have now discredited the preface and the bodidharma myth as well. END.

  • part 2.

18 luo han hands were by the 18 luo han monks. The 5 animal styles were from Li Sou, Hong Quan and Jueyuan. There is nothing left for bodhi to claim LMAO.

Yes, I heard of the painting. One problem, first, it only shows various shaded monks all wearing Chinese clothes practicing. Second, it doesn’t say anything about bodhidharma. Third, it was done during Ming, a MELLEINIUM AFTER bodhi’s time. So way to go.

    end part 2...

  • seems too many indians believe this funny joke. i will burst all your bubbles.

Kung Fu did NOT come from India. Boddhidharma only taught zen techniques like breathing first of all. second, the first shaolin monks were already masters in kung fu.

    end part 1

  • Anyone saw that Kickass Moves episodes where he goes and visit a kalari master and he says the guy is a charlatan , then the master almost breaks the show host's neck... that was pretty funny.

They also made another documentory about that so called charlatan on Discovery, he claims his style is the original style and the true descendants of Shaolin kung fu.. if you ask me the style they show on the way of the warrior documentary looks more genuine.. but what do i know.

  • pjose33 i salute you for your comment. it is true ...bodhi dharma s the guru of all martial arts.......vande matram.............mera bharat mahannnnnnnnnnnnnnn

  • is the doctor guy speaking tamil?

  • @Honor1104 Nope, its called malayalam. I would call it a subset of tamil

  • everything come from india cury, karate, kungfu. buddha, ghandi, yoga just to name a few. lol

  • its amix of martial arts

  • Jai hou!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • India is where martial arts were born; it was refined in China, Japan, Korea, and the Philippines, but it was in India where the powerful combination of physical, mental, and spiritual discipline and training.

  • @Tareltonlives nope, wishful thinking

  • @angryaznman i am not indian but i was told the all eastern martial arts originated by the indian my sifu told me the shaolin juiced it up to work for them kung fu but the only way to know for sure is to be there 2000 and somthing years ago

  • @ryanWeap your sifu is talking out of his ass.

this stuff is not some sort of secret gossip ok.

this is HISTORY. not even some random event, it is SIGNIFICANT HISTORY.

and Chinese are unparalled in their record keeping. after the invention of paper, every dynasty has meticulous historical records on everything that went on in China.

    this is world known.

so how come something of this importance isnt in a credible historical source?

learn to think for yourself. learn to use logic.

  • @angryaznman are you sure it is not you talking out of your ass nobody talks about my sifu like that he is a respected shaolin master so how would you know about kung fu who teaches you i know that the shaolin traveld to india to visit other buddist monks in india in india the known a martial art for sometime and shaolin didnot teach or study it as much so a buddist monk from india inspired them to still worship buddah and learn kung fu and all styles of kung fu came from shaolin

  • @ryanWeap you are still not answering a simple logical question. why cant you explain why not ONE historical record gives them credit?

not to mention the creation of the 5 animal styles of shaolin is already recorded. there is nothing left to claim.

    thats the funny part.

you are filled with hope and fantasy, no pragmatic mind can believe you because of this glaring historical record problem.

  • @angryaznman most records of that time was destoryed during some war and only records were in some old books old shaolin tales and temple paintings and the oldest dated intell was talking about buddist monks traveling to southern india to learn a martial art and a buddist monk from india that inspired them to practice kung fu but they known kung fu BUT HE INSPIRED THEM TO PRACTICE KUNG FU THEY ALREADY KNOWN KUNG FU BUT HE INSPIRED INSPIRED

  • @ryanWeap LOL destroyed. how convenient. so the records talking about the creation that remained magically dont mention it.

the ones that did were destroyed.

this is very typical of delusional people.

INSPIRED INSPIRED. relax. hahaha. so funny.

  • @angryaznman

When the British eventually conquered Southern india, they banned Kalari and the penalty of practicing the at was DEATH.

  • @Tareltonlives still many people are ignorant to acknowledge that

  • @Tareltonlives not even close. Kalaripayattu originated during 11th century. look it up.

  • @angryaznman now shut up u fool. kalari dates back to several millenia before christ. the warriors of battle of mahabharat 5000 years back knew this art. several names are there and here a piece of shit like u claim that kalari is 1000 yrs old.

if its ur time scale then i"m damn sure u"ll say alexander was born 400 years back. IDIOT!

  • @broulys1729 Kalari TRUTH:

In Sangam, Kalari was not used as a martial act according to dick Luijendijk, a researcher at the university of Nijmegen. "Kalari" is a centre of learning in Kerala. they taught language, math etc. later on, there were fight schools, thats what "payattu kalari" means.

  • @broulys1729 Phillip Zarrilli, a professor at the University of Exeter and one of the few Western authorities on kalari payat, estimates that the art dates back to at least the 12th century CE. The historian Elamkulam Kunjan Pillai attributes the birth of kalari payat to an extended period of warfare between the Cheras and the Cholas in the 11th century CE.

  • where can i buy this movie?

  • i bet they cant fight for shit

  • Indian arts have survived just fine. Commercial schools are often a waste of time. There are few good commercial schools. The best teachers take only disciple students. Much of the old Kalari survives in Silat, Harimau and Ling Lom.

  • What a shame so little of Indian martial arts survives today. It's so unfair that Japan, China, and Korea had so much cultural consistency on their side. They are the only cultures whose martial arts have been practiced for thousands of years.

  • Thousands of years? MOST of the arts practiced today in Japan, China and Korea are barely 100 years old. Karate, Judo - 1920s, many styles of traditional kung fu - late 1800s-early 1900s, Most kung fu as taught today - 1960+, Tae Kwon-Do - 1958...none of these are ancient arts. The oldest arts tend to be in island communities such as the indonesian archipelago.

  • Actually I happen to know that Karate and a few others are newcomers. However all of those fighting styles have their direct origin in more ancient fighting styles that the Far Easterners had at their disposal when they decided to modernize their fighting.

  • India has suffered from Islamic and English invasions for over 800 years. It is nothing but an incredible wonder that the ancient civilization of this planet still survived unlike other cultures like Mayan, Aztec, Greek, Egyptian, Roman, Mithra, Persian etc.

Also remember that it was a Kalari expert (his name is Bodhi Dharma) of South India in 15th century introduced this martial arts to Shaolin.

  • You know how I feel. When you study Non Far Eastern martial arts you are truly studying the human cost of imperialism and the many different martial arts that have been lost because of it.

  • Actually I think it's best the Indian martial arts as well as any other real ancient marital art stays that way. Look at all that commercial karate/taekwondo/wushu crap being marketed out in the West these days...That's a shame.

  • Far Eastern martial arts entering the American mainstream has given us a level of respect for the Asians. That's a good thing. Tragically despite the Indians incredible accomplishments in martial arts most people don't have that much respect for the Indians in general.

  • b.s. you know, people laugh when they hear of a TKD blackbelt.

  • You mean if somebody spontaneously calls out that they have a black belt? I don't get what you are saying.

  • Talk about a foot massage..

  • thanks for thr post

  • nice massage

  • they need gyms and punching bags!

  • cool omo plata like lock at around 5 minutes

  • the chick at 4.42 is hot

  • WTF... !!!

    LOL...

She has a good bone structure, but, you do realize that this film is about 25 years old.. so i wonder what she looks like right now (or maybe not).

BTY, i'm also a big fan of Buakaw, hope he recovers and KO's sato in the first round.

  • it's so weird because i can understand what the villagers are saying because i'm one of them....thank you so much for posting this...my Dad loved it..lol

  • is the translation spot on?

  • Yeah...its kinda accurate...

  • thank you

  • Ironic really because Most Indians practise Karate, Kung Fu etc and dont even know about their own martial art. The British outlawed the martial art which was why it became secretive.

  • not only that: most indians don't even know that karate, kung fu etc. have all their origin india.

  • An interesting documentary, thanks for the post. I have great interest in Buddhism+ great respect towards India. And I believe it was originated from Nepal then to India to eastern Asia. So I could infer, how this martial art can influence eastern culture as it had great effect on religion. By the way, white racists should stop insulting Indians. British finally gave up their greed after two world wars. And you English people hurted India+ China during 19th century to simply make more money...

  • And the koreans hurt their own people to make money. Ironic isn't it.

  • welcome......man!we love peopleyou people tooooooo........

  • If there's any martial art in India that I can take seriously it's Pelwhani wrestling not this!

  • Thats for fat people who enjoy throwing their weight around..

  • are u talking about alexander?

    tha indians defeated alexander..

the portugese didnt conquer india the south traded with them same with the romans and greeks... and the british are back stabbing sneaky sewer rats n thieves nuff said

  • Fact: the Indians did not "defeat" Alexander. Alexander's soldiers mutinied, fearing an ambush, and having been exhausted after years of war.

  • @WillDee87

No Country/Empire was or ever is a saint.

  • @WillDee87 ROFL are you kidding. do you even know how many indian kingdoms alexander conquered? goodness.

  • thank you for posting this doku

  • This is the most hardest and best martial art. all these martial arts like karate, kung fu and all other crap came from kalari.

  • Many ppl call Kalari 'the Indian Martial Art', I mean it represents martial arts of whole India.. But Kalari only exsists in Kerala..

  • Well Kelara after all is in India so just like Shaolin Kung fu is from Henan province and called a Chinese martial art the same applies to Kalari. Kalari is not the only martial art in India. There is Gatka, Inbuan, Lathi, Adithada, Thang Ta, Hanuman Akara, Paika Athada, Vajra Mushti, Marma Addi. Just about every Indian state has their own martial art unfortunately during the colonial period the British Raj outlawed practice of any martial art

  • (Cont) This forced many Gurus to practice and to continue teaching away from the prying eyes of the British forces. Failure to adhere to the strict law usually resulted in having the master and his students hanged publicly. So yeah it was a bloody decline for Indian martial art.

  • The school has of Kalari itself is said to have three schools I am only familiar with the southern style which places more emphasis on hand and feet combat. The arts I listed aren't the only ones there are many more.

  • U r absoultely correct

  • I realized your Lankan I'm a fellow Lankan myself. You have studied Karate *bows* I myself have done taekwon Do however I have taken upon myself to learn other disciplines on the side too. This enhances my learning I don't think I could ever be a true master in sense that there is always something new to learn or ways to improve oneself. You may also like to know that Sri Lanka has Angamporra which bares similarities to the Southern style of Kalari and Adithada.

  • true and correct. tq

  • wrong! you have it in kerala and northern india

  • what do you mean by iberian martial arts(spain, portugal etc.). i yes please informe me please. thank you.

  • indians are d best ftw

  • Wrong. Iberia (spain/portugal) has been at warfare since the beginning of time, they didnt have time to go to another country to take fighting lessons that's not what was done in ancient times. Modern times yes like the U.S. military martial art is a mix of british, greek, japanese, chinese, and thai fighting. \

  • All the martial art have beging from Pagration. The army of Alexander the Great just spread on the world the term of fighting skill. Its the oldest and most perfect way of fighting. Just try to look on the MMA. All the fighter of MMA conclude to fight the way of pagration. The start was Pagration the end will be the same.

  • how stupid can you be? Every culture around the globe has had to develop a way of self defense both armed and unarmed in violent times not go to greece, india, or egypt to take fighting lessons. European martial arts have a resemblence to greek combat.

  • Native american martial arts are completely different they use only the straight punch(which is common in every culture except for how you throw it) hammerfist, eye gouging, biting, when they would grapple they wouldnt use submissions their goal was to instantly kill their opponent. By the way MMA is a mix of British, Greek, Japanese, and Thai combat, that's why it's known as MMA

  • How did they spread combat to the world? they never reached the orient or america which only the orient knew existed but was unknown to the rest of the world at the time. As you can see middle eastern martials and asian martial arts have a close resemblance but the asians had to develop it on their own not take fighting lessons from India maybe just the religion Buddhism

  • all fighting systems come out of KMT...aka kemet, nile valley/delta, modern dat egypt...

  • Wrong, every culture around the world has had to develop a way of self defense not go to Egypt to take fighting lessons. When all the continents were connected, America land of the red people was connected to the orient that's why they have a close resemblance, America was on the otherside of the world far from egypt, you should study their fighting arts such as isuna nika dot com the art of the plains warrior or Lua the art of the Hawaiian warrior not even european martial arts compare

  • What the hell? You seem to be in a wrong time field. Sorry. When the continents were connected, there were still dinosaurs walking around. I don't think there were humans, back then...

  • What do you know, you can learn a little something from everyone, even the indians and their arts. I'm surprised to see that they are so built and muscular, they must work out a lot+do physical labor.

    Thanks for posting.

  • I have been wanting to see this for years. do you have 'The Philippino Way'. please post.

  • I do, I was about to post it, but then had problems splitting up the last section so I lost interest hahaha. I'll have it up by the end of this weekend. Subscribe to me and you won't miss it ;)

  • Thanks for uploading this video. It's amazing.

Recently I went to kerala and had a first hand experience of Kalari. These videos give more insight.

  • did u train?

  • brilliant, and good commentary. Thank you so much for spreading the word. How did you comeby this? and what is your own interest?

  • You're welcome!

This is part of a larger series on the martial arts by the BBC. But I originally heard of Kalari through another documentary a few years ago. My own interest isn't necessarily specifically on Kalari, but the world in general. I take kendo, but enjoy learning about other arts as well.

  • A rare look!
