Interesting to see all the fire, sparks and damage to the other vessels. Something you never really see in TOS. Not like Voyager and Deep space 9 where they pretty much blow the set up every battle
If one has watched both films, The Enemy Below, with Robert Mitchum as the American destroyer captain and Curt Jurgens as the German sub captain you will notice that the words are only slightly changed for the Star Trek episode. I think it,s cool though, as the movie is probably the best submarine flicks ever made.
One of the good things about this benchmark episode was its defiance of Campbell's edict that humanity can succeed against aliens only by moral ascendancy and never by technology or a stand up equal fight. Nothing against Campbell's overall genius but this was a weary concept after awhile demonstrated at how eager audiences were to see Starship Troopers blow hell out of alien bugs.
I have read that this episode of Star Trek "Balance of Terror" was based on the film the 1958 war film The Enemy Below. A battle of wits takes place between a US destroyer captain & a german U-boat captain. In ST, of course, the battle takes place in space. The late Mark Lenard gave such a great dignifed performance as the Romulan captain that he was personally chosen by Gene Rodenberry to play Spock's father Sarek in a later episode. It is my second fav. ep after "City on the edge of forever".
it was classic when they were all wispering as if they were in submarines where sound could freely pass in water between the ships. Um it doesn't work that way in the vacuum of space but I still adore this episode.
to this day you still hear spaceships shoosing through the vacuum of space as it it were are but it shouldn't bother anyone looking at the stories and not those little things.
Ok could someone explain when the Romulan ship fired, the enterprise was going backwards in full spread and keep begging for phrases. But where the sheilds? what happen to the shields? Kirk should said Sulu sheilds now!!!!!
This was always one of my favorite original episodes, despite the many mistakes made (photon torpedos shown when the order was made to fire phasers, Kirk getting thrown backward while the ship and everyone else was thrown to the left, etc).
Otherwise, the storyline is wonderful as well as tons of action!
Great job condensing this episode! The dramatic acting in Star Trek was wonderful in episodes like this. And really convincing old school special effects, not the fake looking effects of today. Thank you for posting!
hi, i just wanted to say that i agree with you about the dramatic acting in this episode(among others)in the first series. it really highlights how hard and unrelenting, not to mention intelligent and quick captain kirk was.
In the original episode one Romulan says "Now 20 cycles still no sign Comander. I say he has ben fooled. He must have gone off". The Comander says "SHH! He is there...Somewhere". The scene then goes to the Enterprise where Kirk says "Captains log. Now motionless 9 hours 47 minute". The Romulans mention of 20 cycles must be a reference to time. Meanwhile 9 hours and 47 minutes have gone by. There 1 cycle time frame must be equal to just less than our 30 minutes.
The blast hit the Enterprise, the crew was thrown, sideways but Uhura was thrown in opposite direction. Like your short version here, impeachblair1...what a name!!
LOL "you're reduce two steps in rank return to post". "Escape manoeuvre one quickly". "Power ON!" "Phaser FIRE!" "helm hard over phasers fire point blank!" "FIRE!" "just one more duty to perform, KABOOM!

@CaryMG Just why the hell can't they fire the phasers from the bridge??
blenderpanzi 2 years ago
The Phasers looked like those little blobs in some of the early episodes...so thats why you are confusing then with the Photon Torpedos.

Anyone notice the captain said 'fire phasers'' and instead they fired torpedos?

Sarek was the Romulan commander? No wonder Stiles was suspicious!

Best quote ST ever: "Leave bigotry in your quarters; there's no room for it on the bridge." -- Kirk in 'Balance of Terror'
