I could listen to the drums and bass for like 10 minutes on their own.. and then bring in MacCabe for another 10 minutes.. and then start the song.. it's THAT GOOD!
Nick McCabe...the most underated guitarist of the 90's....the verve would not have been half they band they were without him...and .of course, Ashcroft does the rest..
There should have been a Nick Cam during this filming, i bet the hairs on the back of his neck were stood up when he did this....and not even a pedal board shot throughout the whole song :-(
Legendary! One of The Verve's best songs. Great performance. McCabe just craps on the likes of Gallagher etc. Up there with John Squire for me! Wish they were still around.
I don't understand why The Verve is considered a "one-hit-wonder" here in the U.S. I have all of their albums...I don't think they have ever put out a song I don't like! . I"m not a fan of United Nations of Sound.
@66fastback99cobra I feel the same. The only song of theirs you ever hear in Australia is Bitter Sweet Symphony. I only stumbled on them by hearing them on the movie "Sliver" sound track back years ago and then went out and bought everything i could find, most had to be imported.
The Verve - Life's Not A Rehearsal Here on You tube just copy and paste and you will get to listen to a McCabe remix Sort of the extended version everyone wishes that this song was . And that Bass riff is just driving it all home . This song is awesome in any version . If you never heard the remix check it out !
This is absolutely stunning. Why didn't the Verve get the attention they deserve in the US? There is unbelieveable intelligence, complexity, and skill in this band. Maybe it takes a more sophisticated musical appreciation taste to understand how great this performance is. Twitter, Facebook, blog them, or whatever .... this is head and shoulders above the music we are spoon feed by the music industry. This is one american who repents for not giving the Verve they attention they deserve.
@Alwaystuned. Ashcroft is singing about yet, another ocean. [i always have to rave about McCabe's guitar work in this performance. admire his sensibilities.]
Every verve video should be filmed like this. Put the spotlight on Nick once in awhile! And to be fair to Richard, he came up with some good lyrics for this one
daaaaaaaaaaaamn!! why did Richard have to screw everything up? now his ex band mates hate him even more... damn Richard.. that's what happens when you get greedy man
My favourite song of all time and always will be! Best version ever! I will be listening to this over and over til I'm old and grey :D. (God help the other people in the old peoples home when I'm blasting this out! ha ha ha!) xxx
I recorded this back in the 90's and have watched it in excess of 500 times. Easily. I've probably watched it on YouTube 30 times in the last month lol.
An amazing performance. Listen to the applaud they get after, fantastic.
The only guitarist I've heard make love to a guitar like that is Hendrix :-)
If I could choose to play like any number of really good guitarists like Stevie Ray Vaughan, Paul Gilbert, Prince or Hendrix, I would choose to play like Nick. I'm not saying he's better or worse, just that he's a wonderful communicator with the guitar.
After splitting up in 95' this was the chance to show to the nation how good a band they were, the critics were unsure and after Bittersweet symphony they had to perform to get the credit they deserve, and they did just that in spectacular fashion. This performance is just unbelievable, The Verve at their best. Everyone clicks and Ashcroft, when McCabes solo kicks in gets lost in it all.
Ahhhh, Heaven! Hazy, crazy, floaty feeling! Perfection in every way! Love this soooooo much! Thanks for uploading, highlight of my night, every night I play it! :D xxx
THIS and There Stuff earliest and NOW. everything ROCKS. And the SOLO stuff, NEW YORK,NEW YORK. damn was written before 9/11 . Thats even MORE SPECIAL !!!! The Verve . Please come to Minneapolis,MN or MID~WEST USA
Always & for ever SO COOOOOLL & DEEPLY SENSUAL as many many songs of that great great old friends's band (hope they'll succed in going beyond their recent misunderstood & split ....)
Really like this song !!! Love the lyrics: "Life is an ocean, too much commotion, too much emotion, dragging me down..." Ready for the game Take a line of fickle flame... There's something inside of me Crying out for something else... Not enough emotion to satisfy me... Hold my hand and we'll walk down Dry those eyes and we'll walk down... Also like very much PETER at drumms, SIMON and NICK on guitars *** Thanks boys for this cool moment ***
I always felt like the bass line made you feel the depth of the ocean and the guitar sounded like whales or other sea life. That's just me. I love this song, though!
might sound corny but those riffs put me back in the 90's better days, i know u r supposed to look ahead not backwards but i cant help myself when i hear him play! nick is an alien out of this world
This made me pick up a guitar all those years ago, now it makes me want to put it down cos I ain't ever going to get near it in a million years, Nick is the second coming! That's why they've split up so many times, Richard clearly wants to be Jesus and it's actually Nick that is...
I dont think McCabe has the determination to do some solo stuff.I think he needs the rhythm section of The Verve to do this, otherwise some of his sounds can sound like soup. Dont get me wrong tho, he is my favourite guitarist along with Dave Gilmour. His style is very unique and quite hypnotic/psychadelic and probably very underated when everyone talks of 90s bands they think of john squire, johnny greenwood and other bores
Totally agree with you mate!I mean,he's a top guitar player(in my opinion the best of his generation)but he also has an incredible rhythm section to build these magnificent sounds.....Fucking top,Verve rule.....
