That's a familiar sound for sure! I'm sure the odor would be familiar also. I was raised with an RCA CTC17X-based set in a huge cabinet with a stereo. We often joked that the d***** thing stayed in the shop more than in the livingroom. We used it as our primary TV until 1988 when it was replaced with a Zenith SD2719P set. The old RCA's swan song was while watching a MASH re-run with my dad. It started hissing, smoking, and the raster started shrinking and losing focus. I shed a tear. :(
Hate this Ipad! Is it the core that is attached to the frame of the flyback? If so, one flyback indicates it is conductive via an ohm meter, and the other one is not. Am wondering what this means, if anything.
@Henrycrun1959 Not sure what you mean by the sides being conductive..? Its impossible to truly check the flyback outside the circuit, most of the time the insulation breaks down and they arc inside and smoke like this one. This flyback passed resistance and ring tests. . The only true test is in real operating conditions.
I was 7 when our few years old RCA color tv blew its flyback. I was 4 when we got it (1969) and I remember my dad saying the tuner went out not long after. Then 3 years later a lot of sputtering and blue light flashing through the air vents. A couple of years later same thing and it was given to a neighbor for parts.

Sorry! One flyback is conductive and other is not - same part number. Any ideas?

Are the vertical sides of this flyback conductive? I have two flybacks

Vintage TVs are awesome, but they seem risky too.
