They were "faking" Frankie being sick so Martin would take pity and let them out. Only, that was the BS version Liz told everyone. The real story is revealed by Liz to the therapist (Because she wasnt a detective, she worked with the police to give analyzations on the people) at the end, only no one knows but Liz and the therapist

The black headed girl had the key the entire time. She kept them al in there because she was obsessed with the American boy. She imagined that he would fall in love with her after she let him out because she was insane. He ended up trying to climb the ladder and in his rage tore it off and it fell and impaled him. She said "It's better this way because he'll always be...perfect". I really liked the movie. This video is awesome.
