  • What are the specs of the ram you have to use in this MacBook (i.e. DDR3 1333MHz)?

  • do u have a 2010 mac pro? i thought it was a 2009 model

  • nice! :) gonna upgrade my MacBook Pro 2011 but pls. is it better to connect the alligator clip of the anti static wrist strap to the ground hole of your wall outlet (or in my case in EU, the ground stick of wall outlet) or to the unpainted metal on my MB Pro case??

  • hi mate, does the Macbook Pro (Late 2011) come with a 6 gbps optical drive? I'm planning on buying one with the OCZ Vertex 256Gb SSD (500mbps read and write) but because its a Sata 3, I'm not sure if the Macbook will take full advantage of the ssd performance

  • Great video. Learnt a lot. I have a late 2011 i5 model and want to do similar upgrades. Handy having the links under the video. Cheers

  • @77GAZA77 Thanks for watching.

  • thanks for the video, really helpful, i have gone through the finder on crucial and there are 2, 2x 4gb kits, one is 1.35v and the other is 1.5v. what one do i get ?

  • what is the maximum SSD thickness that can fit inside the macbook pro 13"? would you recommend Corsair Force 3 120GB SSD to be use?

    thanks

  • Great videos !

  • @davomrmac how come you didn't upgrade the RAM to 12GB or even 16GB?

  • ur a smart dude

  • @nathan5301 Thanks :)

  • what does the ssd upgrade do? and does more ram mean more applications that can run at one time?

  • @drdrummerman The SSD upgrade will make your system faster. The SSD drive works much faster than a Hard disk drive, since the read/write speed is more than doubled (in most cases). And yes, the RAM upgrade makes the system a bit (in some cases a lot) faster and makes it run smoother while having more apps started..

  • @Paranoidhaze you know, I'm glad the 13-inch MacBook Pro (late 2011 model) can support 16GB of RAM. I'll probably put 8GB or 12GB in there when I get my MacBook Pro.

  • could you do a vid on changing the optical drive another hard drive.please please please

  • Very good video. Please also do for 16gb kit. And didn't you forgot to paste that 'pull out' sticker on SSD from HDD? :-)

  • @ps230793 16gb is the same procedure, the only difference is that you have 2x 8gb ram cards instead of 2x 4gb ram cards

  • Where did you get the anti static strap?

I want to do some upgrades and I want to make sure I dont have any static.

So one would be sufficient to get rid of all static electricity or will you need more than one?

  • @themacbookone Maplin Electronics. One is fine.

  • @davomrmac Why don't you put it in your mac pro becaus it has 4 har drive slots that's what I do with all my old hard drives I put it in my mac pro Is it good putting 4 hard drives in a mac pro and upgrading the memory

  • @Scobuna3 My Mac Pro has four HDs already.

  • Great vid What are you doing with the original MacBook pro hard drive

  • @Scobuna3 Keeping as backup.

  • why would anyone need 8gb memory ?

  • @yooz3R I wouldn't mind it. I have 4GB and it's nearly always full.

  • @yooz3R

so the cpu can get data more quicker and you can have loes of apps opnened

  • Great video Dave. I'm hoping to upgrade the RAM on my mb pro shortly and this was a great how to guide. Any plans on showing how to upgrade to an SSD drive using an optibay enclosure and replacing the cd drive?

  • @PrestwichTTC Sorry, but I won't be doing that.

  • Which one would you recommend the 21.5 inch iMac ($1500)or 13 inch MacBook pro with all theese upgrade. I have the iPad 2 and the iPhone 4S and those are perfect for watching YouTube on the go and surfing the web but I want something powerful to edit videos.

  • @AKidzView Depends if you need to be portable or not? That should really answer your question. The iMac will be more capable.

  • sorry dave this may sound stupid but will upgrading the ram improve speed and do you have to back the memory up or anything ???

  • @greigsa01 It will improve overall productivity and the number of apps you can have running at the same time, also memory intensive apps. No need to back up the memory, but always advisable to backup your hard drive before any upgrade.

  • Very well done video indeed. Many thanks.

  • warranty voided

  • i love my macs too dave, but ive got alienware that geekbeched 13870

  • Wonder how much that MrThai guy pays for the ad in front of every video

  • Great video Dave. What are the chances that you can screw up the components inside the machine if you don't have that anti static wrist strap?

  • 128 GB SSD vs 750 GB HDD?

  • why do some people remove the optical drive to install the ssd?

  • @seal3081 So they can have one SSD for the OS, the other SSD or HD for data. No need for the optical drive nowadays unless you are burning DVD's.

  • Do you have a recommendation where to buy a SSD?

  • @themacbookone scan .co.uk

  • Why does the regular Hard-drive, (the one you took out of the laptop) say 'Toshiba' the PC computer brand...

hehe im on a toshiba omnon

  • Comment removed

  • omg thats soo cheap,

i want to go to the UK just to buy are memory harddrive

  • could you do a tutorial on how to clone hard drives and solid state drives?

  • @RageMonkeyX maybe.

  • dave, the star shaped screws are called torque screws

  • @andygreeny11 yep, I know, just slipped my memory.

  • where did you get the screwdriver you are using to open up the macbook pro?

  • @Zosothephysicist kamasa .co.uk

  • Great video Dave. This was a great video for people who don't know how to do this sort of thing as it was nice and clear. Even tho I know how to do this sort of thing I still watched because you might of shown me something I did not know.. You should make more of these types of videos.

  • @MrStephen182 Thank you.

  • Hope I win ;-)

  • Nice video!

  • Why did you had so low write speeds? they should be like 450+ MB/s

  • @LanteanStargater not sure yet, looking into it.

  • Dave at some point could you please review the new LaCie thunderbolt drive. :)

  • OWC Mercury EXTREME Pro 6G is way faster then this one

  • I have the 2011 MBP 8gb 240gb agility 3 on my channel :)

  • Why not just get a MacBook Air 13'? Better battery slimmer and I'm sure save $ on top of it. If a SuperDrive means that much to you I guess but can just get an external disk drive. And the 13' MacBook air has screen resolution of a 15' MacBook Pro #justsayin

  • Love the video :) Great to see a fellow Brit doing well! Can you recommend any other ways CHEAPLY to remove any static electricity? that seems very good but its money; not to mention time? :) Thanks Dave; My MacbookPro 13inch comes Wednesday, doing exactly this!

    Cheers!

  • @techyapplemanHD Only safe way is with an anti-static wrist strap or mat.

  • Are you adding another SSD and removing the DVD Drive?

  • @TheRobyoman not sure yet.

  • The internals of an Apple product Is engineering excellence and beauty.

  • @timothyln12 Very true.

  • @timothyln12 Are you serious? That's what the internals of every laptop looks like... even my low end HP dm3.

  • The MacBook pro with the hardware is fairly fast already.

  • Great video, very informative.

  • @youngguru5050 Thank you.

  • Dave, you forgot to put back the plastic lifter from the HDD that's why it's hard to lift out the HDD.

  • @MacMike1000 No worries, I have plenty more planned for future upgrades.

  • So from 750 to 120GB FOR JUST A BIT MORE SPEED!!!!!!!!!!!

  • @edog5723 ;) lol, yep.

  • Awesome video Dave, Like i mentioned in the last video of opening the MBP, I never get tired of seeing these. So detailed,The explanations of how to do everything was very clear,Easy to follow,So even the novice people should be able to follow and do things right instead of paying Apple so much for them to do it. Definatly impressed with the Test's that you ran at the end of the video,I just don't understand why Apple are still installing 5400rpm HDD's as the norm ?,But hey,Great video m8y :)

  • @pimpyouriphone3g Thanks, I try to show everything in this type of video to help everyone out.

  • You have really long intros, it's getting annoying.

  • this is one awesome laptop ^_^

  • @luismacintosh Thanks :)

  • is there a disk speed test for windows? if there is, what software would you recommend to me? tenx! nice vid btw.

  • @kiramiyabi Not sure, anyone else?

  • @gagithemacboy you should be able to do the same upgrades of SSD and *gb, just check on crucial and make sure you choose your model of mac because the RAM is a bit different from model to model.

  • @davomrmac If I were you I would put the anti-static wrist wrap on before doing anything so that I wouldn't forget to put it on. Better safe then replacing defect items! in my opinion.

Those star shaped connectors/screws could be torx screws as far as I could see in the video.

Keep up the great work, Dave!

    Take care,

    nick

(certified computer technician - Comptia A+)

  • @MrCuriosity63 Thanks :)

  • Dave's videos are always awesome.

  • @enyownz Cheers.

  • Excuse me Dave! but I'm still wondering if i should just get ann SSD or just keep the 750gb 7200 rpm hard drive? I see a lot of tech reviewers get a 120 gb and i always wonder isn't that small considering the fact that u guys make a lot of videos. Dave I'm going to be working on movies, videos music creation etc. which one do u think will best suit me an sdd or an hdd? note that i need speed and the most GB for storage of my music and movies and etc.

  • @airbornghost123 The HD installed is 5400rpm so no good for video editing really. I would go SSD then capture to external HD.

  • 01:24 Dope screwdriver

    awesome video...pretty neat explanation

    \m/

  • can i upgrade my 2009 macbook pro same upgrades that u did ?

  • I'd like to see how you installed Lion too! Nice vid!

  • @trickstarsym I cloned the hard drive to the SSD.

  • Nice wond Dave !

  • @bluetom53 Thanks so much :)

  • @MultiGeekster, he gets the same amount of money for every video, its based on views, so he could post a 1 minute video and still het the same amount of money you complete and utter tit

  • Too professional with those equipment, nice staff there =)

  • @JorJorArmany Thanks :)

  • @MultiGeekster Hahaha you are seriously stupid kid, just jog on.

  • @chazzarr2011 Hahaha you are seriously stupid kid, just jog on.

  • @davomrmac do you use an application to enable trim support? i was thinking of using "trim enabler for mac"

  • @Zosothephysicist No, but I will check it out.

  • Dave, Im running a Mid 2009 Macbook Pro 2.53Ghz 15" do you recon its worth the upgrade? My machine dose run slow sometimes but its still perfectly usable! It would probably cost me around £300 to upgrade to a top of the range 13" MBP I think, how much of a speed difference will I see between the Quad Core 17 in the 15" MBP and the Dual Core 17 in the 13" MBP?

  • @thefilmmakerpro You will notice a decent speed increase in this from your current machine. However, the jump from the 13" dual core to the 15" quad is a VERY noticeable difference.

  • @davomrmac I suppose I wil wait for the next update then! That way I can get what I really would like instead of rushing into it!

  • GOIN ON AN ON AN ON AN ON AN ON THIS SHOULD OF TAKE 6 MINS BUT THE LONGER HE MAKES THE VIDEO THE MORE MONEY HE WILL MAKE IN OUTER WORDS HE DON'T GIVE A SHIT ABOUT YOU PPL ITS ALL ABOUT THE MONEY!!!

  • @MultiGeekster Did you have to watch it? no, so stop trolling and get a life :L

  • HES TELLING PPL HOW TO INSTALL RAM LIKE WHERE THICK OR SOMETHING

  • @MultiGeekster A lot of people find this information useful ;) thanks for watching.

  • dave, just a quick question, do SSD's make ANY noise at all, I've literally just bought one, its not arrived yet, but i can't seem to find a definite answer to it.

  • @WiiSpeakApple silent :)

  • @WiiSpeakApple SSDs have no moving parts mate, so there's nothing that could produce noise. ;)

  • Hi, in order to restore your data onto the SSD, can you not just create a time machine backup onto an external hdd (whilst you still had the hdd in your macbook), then install the ssd, then plug the external hdd in and restore the time machine backup to the ssd?

  • @jin37uk Well you could, but so much easier just to clone.

  • @davomrmac could you make a video on how you cloned your hdd to ssd? and whats the full product name of the duplicator you used in the video to clone your hdd to ssd? thanks.

  • @Jamiul1000 I will add the info under the video.

  • arent HDD upgrades not covered by Apple anymore?

  • @abby4u No idea ;)

  • I bought my MacBPro on Oct 2009 and it's still awesome. Maybe I'll full upgrade next year but this is really interesting thing to consider.

    Nice vid.

  • 1:40 - ALIEN TECHNOLOGY HAHA

  • @AORNOfficial lol.

  • @MrphatSlim that's what i said :P

  • Nice video Dave :)

  • @MrPhatSlim Thanks.

  • @davomrmac Let me get this right, you just cloned your HDD to SSD, then it just boots up to the 'old' system on HDD? :o

  • @xaero212 Yes, cloned HD to SSD, then put SSD in and it boots.

  • @davomrmac That's quite nice quick solution. And using Time Machine, could I do a similar thing? Or can I just copy all files from current os x HDD to the SSD connected using usb for example (cause I don't have a cloning device)?

  • Brilliant vid

  • @earlbee31 Thanks.

  • So does that mean that you can do all of this with the cheapest MacBook Pro? (13" £999 Model) Because I have this one and it looks pretty decent what you've done to yours! Keep it up Dave! Oh and Mr. Scratch say hi! :D

  • @TechnologyGadgets Yes. I did it to the base model, it's not so base anymore.

  • @TechnologyGadgets Yes you can.

  • i'm thinking of upgrading my mid 2010 15" macbook pro with an ssd.

it has SATAII so i was wondering should i get an ocz vertex 2 which has a max read/write of about 240MB/s for €235 or should i get an ocz agility 3 for €305 which can go up to about 500MB/s, but i will be maxed by the SATAII to about 375MB/s?

  • @Zosothephysicist I would buy the faster one, a little future proofing.

  • @davomrmac i did some more research and found a data sheet of the agility 3 on ocz's website, apparently the sata3 - sata2 compatibility isn't perfect. so the max speeds i would get out of it are the same (even a bit slower) compared to the sata2 drive, so i'm going with the vertex 2, plus it's cheaper.

  • isnt the os installed in the harddrive?

  • @schenkenberg13 Yes, the HD was cloned to the SSD.

  • cool

  • @hipstertool69 Cheers.

  • Dave, you just make the best videos.

  • @InspectorGadgetTV Thank you.

  • A great video as always, keep up the good work Dave! :)

  • Nice video Dave. :)

  • @nautbijker thanks.

  • Dave update us on Alineware laptops - Thanks

  • I don't even need to upgrade my laptop atm but I still watched this video :p

  • @Issara62 I don't have a laptop at all and watched it. :O
