Harry was certainly a "one of a kind" type of guy. His time among us was way, way too short for sure. Harry was one of the best story teller artists that ever was. RIP Harry - we sure miss you.
An incredibly touching song from the genius that was Harry Chapin. The world is a better place for having had him here, albeit for a time that was too short.
Harry was what you would call back in my day "one of the Beautiful people" an Icon, a man who for all his troubles somebody who would take the shirt of his back and give it to you without question or thought
Check out George Donaldson's A Song for Harry Chapin. It's a wonderful tribute to this amazing man. George is a member of the smash band Celtic Thunder and recently had the honor of singing Cat's in the Cradle in front. Of Sandy Chapin. Herry truely was a visionary.
It's still amazing how his three or four minute song could tell such a complete story.I could see and feel the characters and live through their actions and pain as he performed them and as I played them again and again. Each one as I play it is my very best favorite one
as good as any one who ever wrote a novel or poem cause he could paint a picture in your mind just with his song.....similar to croce....miss them both....nice to have utube to reminice
there are videos available of him in concert, and frequently PBS stations will run a concert he did as a fundraiser for them. So you can still have at least a taste of what it was like. I'm so grateful for every song he's performed that has been preserved this way so those of us who never got to see him live get to introduce another generation to his work.
I remember this song so well. It always affected me deeply. And now all these years later it still does. He didnt get played much on radio because his songs were always too long. But he was always telling a story and the loss was radio's.
To all those saying you got to see him in concert, I envy you... He died 8 months before I was born... I've often said I'd sell my soul to get to go back and talk to him, meet him, hold a conversation with him... And probably tell him to go up to the hospital on that summer day instead of heading down th LI expressway towards his gig... The world lost a great one when we lost him!
He was the best saw him everytime he came to town......the shows were alway wonderful , he is gravely missed, b will always be in my heart.......Leelee
Harry was a great man who brought life to so many. His visit to us in Italy, and the time he took to talk to any of us that were not afraid to approach him, was just fantastic.
I got to actually meet Harry Chapin back in 1981, and I saw him in concert about 2 months before he died on that sad day on the Long Island Expressway! I'll always appreciate and love your music forever, Harry! Peace and Love, BobbyK
Harry Chapin at the Macaulay Theatre, Louisville KY, Nov '80, was my first concert! He did a meet and greet after the show in the alley. He must have been there another hour. The following summer, we lost him in the auto accident. His works to fight world hunger continue.
I was putting my little girl to bed tonight and she wanted me to sing to her, I tried the usuals but she wanted something else. At first I was at a lost and then the words to this song just started to flow. She's only one and a half so the words didn't matter but she was silent and just stared at me with those gorgeous eyes. There is just something about his work - it pulls at the heart regardless of age or generation.
The crowd was silent for a long time after the song. Then a huge applause and cheer. We took time to dry tears and take breaths before the applause. Harry was a person real and personal in the moment in the concert in Marquette, Michigan. The empty nights. The bother you is understood. Listen Good. YOUR heart will be more thankful. Your so dam beautiful I send you smiles and hugs.
This is why I hate the music of my generation. The lady gagas and other bastards that ruining music today. When you compare the new stuff to harry....
couldn't agree more. our generation's music with a few notable exceptions is complete trash.....id rather listen to this and a 60 year old phil collins than 98 percent of what's out there right now.
Saying, " it's time that I moved on..." gets me every time. One of my all time favorite songs. Miss you, Harry.

They shouldn't drink this much before they perform. The stretched out notes are really irritating. Song should have started at 1:27.
