It is actually possible to train soldiers to distinguish between combatants and non-combatants, though. Which is a hell of a lot better than nothing. And that is being done considerably better now. Once he came back he felt bad about it so he had that book to remind himself every day of what he did. Look him up his story is pretty interesting. He eventually killed himself. What happened at My Lai happened. But do any of you know what happened in Hue only months earlier? Or what happened at Dak Son the previous year? The NLF and NVA did their share, believe me. But horrible as it sounds, massacres happen in every war. But My Lai is the first one to come to light and be documented for the general public to observe. I wonder if WWII would be as justifiable in retrospect if we'd be privy to everything that had occurred.

I just watched an hour and an half on the massacre of My Lai on NOVA and is pretty fucked up. Lt. Calley is the only member that was convicted in the massacre and yet Nixon pardoned him, overall he only served 4 months, i guess b/c is only took 4 hour to do the massacre so is only took 4 month to do the crime.

This is an excellent documentary. It shows the heart of the weakness of humanity. All humanity, whether American, German, Vietnamese..... This is how people can be rallied to hate so much and kill without remorse. Dehumanization of another group due to propaganda, and the unquestioning of orders.

The fact that these american soldiers are resentful of what they did is good enough to me that they deserve to be forgived. Its not right what they did killing innocent and harmless people, but then again who is the real perpetrator in this crime: The government. So all you guys who say "Fuck USA, and I hope these soldiers rot in hell!!" put yourselves in their shoes. Again im not agreeing that what they did was right in fact I question their morality for what they did, but war is hell...

@PeiperJ2 -Then he was simply willing to perform in exchange for a fee,if he was really willing to talk about what happened then the truth would have been his motivation,not cash.It's not like it was the first time someone had contacted him wanting to know what happened,it was a well paying opportunity,and he certainly wasn't volunteering any information.

This was an atrocious act of cowardice that goes to show the ineffectiveness and inhumanity of conscription. However, comparing this to Fallujah??? That is ignorant and dangerous. Marines and soldiers today are nothing like this and the chances of an event like this conspiring today is next to none. My Lai then, Fallujah and the rest today. During the 91 Gulf war injured soldiers on the Road to Basra were buried alive with bulldozers by the Americans. America also doesn't accept the jurisdiction of the International Criminal Court over it's military.
America can just do what it likes. That's why it builds these million dollar media centres where they invite arse licking journalists to report their lies for them. The media in Iraq are also being paid to report fake stories.
