This comes from such a great episode. It was quasi-standalone in that we weren't overwhelmed with much about the arc or mythos of the show but more we got time to resolve or in some cases inflame character quarrels and that was what really draws me in about "Unfinished Business".
BSG - one of the best shows of all time. In the 4 seasons, only 1 episode could be considered "filler". The Soundtrack is amazing (The shape of things to come from season 2, I think, is my fav., which this song is a lot like), great dramatic themes, great acting, special effects that rivals the motion picture industry, realistic characters, and the show closes with one of the best finales ever. Best Sci-Fi ever, even non-sci-fi fans enjoy this show.
@Psypomp Jesus No, Black Market was a good episode which showed even the good guys are flawed, that episode was great - Filler episode would be "Hero". Ok, Starbuck figured out and stumbled upon a way to fly the cylon fighter... but another person doing the same thing? Blah. Would've been better if they had him steal a commandeered raptor. I wasn't to crazy about the "boxing" episode either.
@vmfjru47 No, the one where the pilot comes back to "haunt" Adama. He escapes by hi-jacking a cylon fighter the same way Starbuck did... Although I wasn't too crazy about the boxing episode either, those two were the worst episodes. The rest were amazing.
@Bawbster1 The boxing episode wasn't filler, though. It provided closure/explanations for several characters' threads between seasons 2 and 3, and it was the launch pad for the apollo/starbuck relationship,
@anchrous I get that... and I never said the boxing one was filler, I was just asked by someone else if that's what I meant. "Hero" was the episode that I considered to be "filler". I just thought that particular episode (the boxing one) wasn't very good. It just dragged on and on... then the DVD set had an extended version of that episode... yuck.
@anchrous yes, but of all the episodes, that one is the most "episodic". In other words, it stands alone, if that episode didn't exist, it wouldn't have really mattered to the overall story. It just didn't fit with the rest of the series. I actually dislike the boxing one more, but the "Hero" episode is definitely filler.
This song is an example of how beautiful well written music can be. This entire soundtrack is amazing. I still can't believe Bear McCreary did not win an Emmy for this. Absolute shenanigans!
I'm probably going to get flayed alive for this, but...must ask. Does anyone else feel that Lee Adama is a little overacted sometimes? IDK, feels excessive at times.
@willthack13 i never really thought so but there were a few times where he was trying to keep his accent (Jamie Bamber is English) that i think people could see as over acting
@antonlibertineable I can understand that :) beautiful is a good word to describe BSG. However, for me there was a huge drop in quality after the New Caprica arc. Season 3 was hit-or-miss and Season 4 was subpar with a very disappointing finale. However, I absolutely adore the first two seasons, and there's no other show I miss as much as this one. Probably because i'm listening to the soundtracks all the time. Damn you McCreary! Haha.
@doublehirn I kinda agree, I was satisfied with how it ended, but I enjoyed the show much more when the religious aspect was balanced with the real politics and warfare aspects. Season two, especially with Admiral Cain and Adama was masterful. But season 3 after New Caprica went downhill when it focused too much on God and prophecy at the expense of the more real worldy stuff.
The finale was a mirror of the series, first half was excellent but the second half was not up to par.
I sort of agree. Season four did have it's moments, though; Gaeta's focus-arc was awesome, and so was "Someone to Watch Over Me", "Revelations", and the first half of the finale. Otherwise, it felt mostly unfocused, with the characters sitting around whining about "fate" rather than trying to advance the plot.
@antonlibertineable I wouldn't put it on the same level as The Wire and The Shield. It is one of my favorite series ever though, and easily has the BEST soundtrack i've heard. It's unfortunate that so many people judge it based off the title.
i can't watch tv anymore afterf galactica. All shows on television with few exceptions are forms of entertainment, while BSG is clearly a piece of art
@MrJoromekiq1 I agree, but not completely. I loved the series. The music was one of my reasons. As I said already I loved the series. But only until the last episodes of season three. Then it all became kinda about faith and too over-blabla in every step of the way. In season one or two I never skipped over the dialogs just to get to the point. We all knew it was going to stop at some point. But I think it was just too much
Battlestar is more than a TV show, it is a masterpiece. It succeeds on every level from story arcs and background universe to individual acting and musical scoring. It is hard to imagine how the medium of television can get any better.
V&V is definitely the best of the Passacaglia variation. I love the ending in particular.
@AphoticCosmos Well my opinion is, that the universes of Star Trek ( TOS; TNG, DS9, first 10 films) and the reimagined BSG together told us everything that is to be told via science fiction: from the endless posibilities of the mighty universe and an idealized human existence to the deepest, most primitive behaviours and the decadence of the human race. Noone can create anything new in science fiction anymore.
@Hidarite100 How could they have told everything there is to be told if the possibilities are endless? This is not the end, nor most likely the peak. All we must do is continue to think.
@Hidarite100 Nothing new in science fiction? There will always be fresh ideas for sci-fi so long as mankind creates new problems for itself. Just watch a little film called "Moon".
@AphoticCosmos Beautifully said. My friend pestered me to watch BSG for a couple months before I gave in and watched the miniseries. Needless to say, I was completely blown away. BSG transcends everything you would think a traditional Sci-Fi/Drama/TV Show would be about. Rarely (if ever) can you say that a television series is a work of art, a masterpiece, but that's exactly how I would classify Battlestar Galactica.
@ Mrxb0x I don't see why you had to comment on this page disrespecting music that is clearly not to your liking but also insulting all those who DO like it. People like you is whats wrong with the internet! Keep your opinions to yourself please!
If anyone else agrees with me, give this a thumbs up!
@willthack13 It's a "Variation" on the Passaglia theme, for sure. It's on purpose. Although this is different enough to be considered a completely song, if you ask me. Especially because of the tempo change/staccato part near the end.
There is a piece of music played only for a moment at the very end of the fight between Lee and Starbuck where they are to exhausted to continue and Anders leaves while Dee looks on with a very sad look on her face as Lee and Starbuck embrace each other out of exhaustion and the fact that they missed each other. That is one of the most beautiful pieces in all of BSG music. It is reminiscent of the season 1 theme song. Anyone know where I can find any track that contains that piece of music?
As I'm not at home with my DVD's this has to come from memory. I think you are talking about the theme called 'The Shape of Things to Come' which indeed appeared for the first time in Season 1.
The baseline of that piece of music is shared with Season 1's Passacaglia
Related songs which also have this same melody or baseline are:
Season 2: Allegro
Season 4: An Easterly View, Assault on the Colony
All titles are available ond the 4 BSG soundtracks.
No thats not the melody I'm talking about. Its the melody that begins around the last 2 minutes of the episode right when Starbuck and Lee hug in a flashback and Lee impulsively kisses Starbuck. Then the scene immediately comes back to the present and Anders says, "I'm outa here" This is reminiscent of the music that plays in the opening credit sequence of season 1.
Lol, no thats not it. Anyone with there dvds handy could look at the exact scene I'm talking about. It is not any sort of variation on "violence and variations" or "allegro" or anything like that. It is reminiscent of the original open credits sequence for season 1 of bsg. (The music is different in seasons 2-4)
I think I found what you were looking for. It goes back to 'Forgiven' from S1 soundtrack. It's the scene where Adama forgives Starbuck for having passed Zak (and therefore having a hand in his death).
BTW, the last thing you hear in that sequence you asked about is a statement of the 'Lee Adama theme' (which for obvious reasons wasn't present in the 'Forgiven' piece in season 1).
Let me know if I solved your puzzle, I'm curious if I cracked it or not.
Thats the one. Thank you skatinglientje! That is my favorite piece of music in all of bsg. It is very short and is not used very often but for me, that is the theme music to bsg. It was also in the US version of the season 1 opening credit sequence. It makes for a much better opening sequence than the UK one that was used for the rest of the series. I really dont get why that theme is so raraly used in the series. I think it is the most powerful.
I fell in love with this song in the episode 'unfinished business' (is that what its from originally?)...and in my opinion one of the best episodes. I know so many people that have written off this show because it's science fiction....but what an amazing drama...great story...great acting...wonderful effects.
I was just looking online and found these sound tracks. Wow yea its Sci Fi and i loved BSG but this guy is incredible. Beutiful is in the eye of the beholder but Bears pieces are very well done.. 2nd one l listed too and i love it.
The soundtrack for BSG(a TV show) is on par with the best movie soundtracks of all time! This is an amazing achievement and Bear McCreary should be headed straight to the top ranks of film composers in no time at all.
@manco82 The Two Towers, that had some stuff in it that I might say is better, but other than that I really haven't heard much that is on par with this. The original Star Wars comes sort of close, but it isn't on the same level.
just so you know, I'm an adult woman who is proud of my sexuality, so "fagot" is not the proper word for me, nor is it the way it's actually spelled, you illiterate fuck. System Of A Down is awesome, but nothing quite as awesome as McCreary, so fuck off.
the episode that this is from, well just watch the extended version on dvd... it doesn't feature this music, because it was written like so much of television is... it wasn't until editing that they realized they needed to break it down to the basic story's parts and have some continuity, so they had Bear compose this specifically to give the episode a theme. Listen to the pod-cast on the extended edition of the episode. I love both versions of this episode. Love the music in both too.
Doe anyone know the name of the piece which appears in all the Opera House scenes in the show and is a theme developed in the last minute or so of this piece or is it just that small part left on it's own?
I love the consistency of crescendo and decrescendo throughout the music. Truly brilliant. I can see how before, some people might have been put off by sci-fi, but everybody I know who has hated sci-fi before and watched this show now loves it. I'm still a more of a Stargate person, Star Trek not so much, but this show rocks AND rolls.
Battlestar Galactica does this because it is so much more than just the average sci-fi show. It has a lot of drama, which is the focus of the series, instead of space battles and whatnot. A lot of the episodes don't even have cylons in them, and sometimes the main conflict is with other civilians, like the labor riots episode.
Oh, so the reason you dislike the music is because you feel it is boring. It's a relief to know that you aren't so shallow as to be biased due to not liking the show, that would just be awful.
You, sir, are an idiot. It's not a soap opera, it's science fiction, one of the most popular genres of television out there. Either you've just come out of a bomb shelter after having spent the last 5 years of your life in imprisonment or the internet is a completely foreign concept to you because BSG is rated no. 1 by almost every sci-fi fansite out there. It's dramatic, it's smart, it's funny, it's science fiction. What's not to like?
actually it was made as an drama not a sci-fi. Ron Moore wanted the show to be about the characters, not the space part of it. the Sci-fi was just a new stage in which to set a new kind of drama and gracefully merge the two. It worked and i love the show but after watching it through once, the second time i appreciate the acting and how each characters story is different. Not just the oh looksy a space ship that has big guns and battles. That is not what the show is about, still a great show...
But wasn't there another version of this soundtrack? It was played in Daybreak part 2, right when everyone decided to settle on the new Earth and you see Adama sitting by Roslins grave. Please anyone tell me the song...
I guess I don't know if you're just trying to get a rise from fan boys or what, but I can't see how you can view this as boring. Even if you remove this soundtrack from the show, Bear McCreary is internationally recognized as one of the top ten fiction soundtrack composers of all time and the only one for television. To simply write it off as boring without backing your position is criminally ignorant. Maybe some Linkin Park will satisfy your desire for musical depth...

ArtOfWar123456 2 years ago
I think it might be 'Under the WIng' from Battlestar Galactica Series 3 OST (track 10)
paulscotlanduk 2 years ago
Lol, no thats not it. Anyone with there dvds handy could look at the exact scene I'm talking about. It is not any sort of variation on "violence and variations" or "allegro" or anything like that. It is reminiscent of the original open credits sequence for season 1 of bsg. (The music is different in seasons 2-4)
ArtOfWar123456 2 years ago
@ArtOfWar123456

Yes, this song is from the episode 'Unfinished Business'.

The soundtrack for BSG(a TV show) is on par with the best movie soundtracks of all time! This is an amazing achievement and Bear McCreary should be headed straight to the top ranks of film composers in no time at all.
manco82 2 years ago 121
@manco82 The Two Towers, that had some stuff in it that I might say is better, but other than that I really haven't heard much that is on par with this. The original Star Wars comes sort of close, but it isn't on the same level.
willthack13 1 year ago
@willthack13 The point is the music from LOTR never really stuck with me. But BSG has. The same way Star Wars and Star Trek did.

the episode that this is from, well just watch the extended version on dvd... it doesn't feature this music, because it was written like so much of television is... it wasn't until editing that they realized they needed to break it down to the basic story's parts and have some continuity, so they had Bear compose this specifically to give the episode a theme. Listen to the pod-cast on the extended edition of the episode. I love both versions of this episode. Love the music in both too.

ofcourse this reminds me of Dr. Balter in the opera house whilst he's on caprica
kommandoSKAR 2 years ago
Doe anyone know the name of the piece which appears in all the Opera House scenes in the show and is a theme developed in the last minute or so of this piece or is it just that small part left on it's own?

I love the consistency of crescendo and decrescendo throughout the music. Truly brilliant. I can see how before, some people might have been put off by sci-fi, but everybody I know who has hated sci-fi before and watched this show now loves it. I'm still a more of a Stargate person, Star Trek not so much, but this show rocks AND rolls.
quinchichi 2 years ago 3
Battlestar Galactica does this because it is so much more than just the average sci-fi show. It has a lot of drama, which is the focus of the series, instead of space battles and whatnot. A lot of the episodes don't even have cylons in them, and sometimes the main conflict is with other civilians, like the labor riots episode.
Cheespuffs45 2 years ago 5
Oh, so the reason you dislike the music is because you feel it is boring. It's a relief to know that you aren't so shallow as to be biased due to not liking the show, that would just be awful.
hchano 2 years ago
AWESOME MUSIC!
One of the best parts of BSG was the incredible soundtrack.
IcyScythe 2 years ago 4
You, sir, are an idiot. It's not a soap opera, it's science fiction, one of the most popular genres of television out there. Either you've just come out of a bomb shelter after having spent the last 5 years of your life in imprisonment or the internet is a completely foreign concept to you because BSG is rated no. 1 by almost every sci-fi fansite out there. It's dramatic, it's smart, it's funny, it's science fiction. What's not to like?
quinchichi 2 years ago 6
actually it was made as an drama not a sci-fi. That is not what the show is about, still a great show...
mattyginj 2 years ago 2
It's a space opera.

I love hearing Karas theme at 1:50...
But wasn't there another version of this soundtrack? It was played in Daybreak part 2, right when everyone decided to settle on the new Earth and you see Adama sitting by Roslins grave. Please anyone tell me the song...

computergeek60 2 years ago 4
I guess I don't know if you're just trying to get a rise from fan boys or what, but I can't see how you can view this as boring. Even if you remove this soundtrack from the show, Bear McCreary is internationally recognized as one of the top ten fiction soundtrack composers of all time and the only one for television. To simply write it off as boring without backing your position is criminally ignorant. Maybe some Linkin Park will satisfy your desire for musical depth...

It's a combination of Lee and Kara's theme combined with the Shape of Things to Come. Played in unfinished business but only near the end I think.
