thats interesting what you said about the phytoplankton able to feed the tank due to the HOB sump just falling in. so basically if i add the mud on my bottom sump, the return pump is most likely going to kill the plankton with its propeller and kinda defeating the purpose?
@JackTopusArt Not at all. Plankton is microscopic and will make it back into the main display. What would be killed in a sump below would be macro life. Much larger which would get chopped up by the return pump.
Wow super quick reply didn't expect that , yes its 100 g uk bout 120 us gallons with about a 30g sump thing with only 100 lbs of rock tanks would look empty to much rock wouldnt be a bad thing would it . will check out your vid in a bit will be getting rid of one canister filter I might buy some miracle mud tomorrow , do you have to change the mud or once it's in that's it . Cheers
@jacklad99 Half the mud must be changed out on a yearly basis. I though 90 kilos was about 198 pounds of rock. I have a 90g system with about 90 pound of live rock and only 50 pounds of it are in the main display, the rest are in the first stage of the sump. Good luck.
Another good vid , few questions , my 100 g tank has been running 3 years now .only got one coral , lots of fish want to get rid of quite a few fish and add corals , I'm currently have about 90 kilos of live rock , run a protein skimmer , and 2 external canister filter . I have now made a custom sump all plumbed in but not siphoning as of yet , because not sure what to add ie... Dsb or miracle mud , cheato , live rock ect , the sump is new nothing in it ,I have taken skimmer out of display put
@jacklad99 So you have a 100g tank with 200 pounds of live rock a skimmer and 2 canister filters? If I were you, I would have only 100 pounds of live rock, and use only one canister for carbon and phosphate media. The live rock should be more than enough biological filtration for this tank, and you only really need about 1 pound per gallon. For the refuge, you can watch my 90g build process to witness how I set up my sump. I also cover a bit of the sump on my cycle video and aquascape video.
@iliriano6 Whoa buddy you posted the same question like 6 times. Please only post the same question once and i will get around to it when i can. The information you seek is found on my videos. I have a 4 part video that covers the maintenance routines I use including dosing the system, and also cover dosing supplements on another video titled "Reef Aquarium Supplement Additives & Testing". Its all there buddy. Good luck.
@iliriano6 Yes. For a reef, calcium and alkalinity is a must. Please visit my 4 part video on how to reef aquarium maintenance to find the answers you seek.
hey, i want to set up another tank. i kinda wanna make it a 5 gallon (i know...i know...its small) "filterless" reef. i would just want some easier corals, some hermits, and some snails...no fish. is this a good idea??
@PatrickCarterFulton I would not recommend it, especially without filtration, but it can be done. Good luck if you decide to go with it and please be sure to let us know how it turns out for you.
Do you have plankton growing in your refugium? You only added the miracle mud to the refugium did you add it aswell to the actual sand in the saltwater tank?
@KOOLITUS I only added the miracle mud to this HOB refugium, no sand, and yes my refugium grows both plankton and phytoplankton. No mud should be added to the main display, only to a refugium. Good luck.
Enjoyed the vid glad you welcome me to your world. I'm new in the reef tank world. So after seeing this vid I knew that you can help me. I want to know if you answer video responses? Sine I don't know all the names of different equipment.
@WCorbin182 I sometimes find time to visit other peoples videos and leave a comment if need be, but sometimes I am overwhelmed with lots of people asking me to view their videos. Therefore, I usually prioritize videos with those who have a series issue and are seeking advice as opposed to those who just want an opinion. If you have a series issue with your tank, of which you need help almost immediately, let me know and I will take a quick look :)
Hav u made the update 3 for the miracle mud yet? I can't seem to find it. I'm setting up a 50G with 20G sump but not sure if I would add miracle mud on top of DSB.
@00APrilAq00 I have made several updates on the mud but in different videos tittles. For Example, I mention the Mud and its effectiveness on parts 2 and 3 of my most recent videos on "How To Reef Aquarium Maintenance - Daily and Weekly Tasks" :)
It seems that miracle mud is a great option but I was wondering how good is it comparing it to a calcium reactor? Is better to have both? I would like to know the pros and cons of this, What do you think? Gracias!
@seselapaz This is not a supplement for a calcium reactor. Please listen carefully to the 3 part video to learn more about its purpose. No cons here. De nada.
@bobbonecrusher I have a video on reef aquarium supplements that describes them in detail and shows the ones I use. The mud has really shown its potential but I also dose Iodine, Trace Elements, Magnesium, Strontium, Iron & Molybdenum, and calcium and alkalinity. All the into you need is found on my videos. AFor example, on my video of day 65 with the plants and algae poster review, I clearly discuss how often I dose these supplements. Good luck.
Hey I just picked up a large aquafuge with the CPR 24" light. I didn't buy the acrylic stands though, is it needed? Or can I just go without it? Also did you have any problems after you setup the fuge? I've heard of people having bad cyano problems in the fuge for the first few weeks. I saw the video where you said the bottom was black. I was gonna put sand down but now I'm scared. Should I just go bare bottom? Thanks
@Rlee410 I went with a different 24" light made by coralife and use the fixture without legs. Works great for me and does not allow light from the refugium into the display tank in the night hours. As for our other question on cyano, please watch all my videos to learn more about cyano. The CPR unit is not at fault here with the cyano issue. Your nutrients are to blame. All the info you need is found on m videos.
@b111372 I have never heard of such a light fixture with 8 65 watt power compact bulbs and only 12 inches wide. I think you are mistaking it with T5 bulbs.
@b111372 There is no way that you can add 520 watts of power compacts to a 75 gallon system. Absolutely no way. It would take too many bulbs to achieve this and not enough bulbs can fit on a 75 gallon tank. You need to recheck the numbers again, and i recommend you watch my video called "Reef Aquarium Lighting"
Thanks for posting all these videos. This hobby is replete with experts of dubious knowledge. I find your videos entertaining and informative. I also appreciate the wide-ranging topics you cover. I’m new to reefing and it is great to get different perspectives and ideas in a hobby so full of great ideas and differing options. @TexanReef Greatly appreciate your kind words of encouragement. glad to be of some help. Thanks for the sub and for watching my videos. If you have any questions regarding the hobby, I am here for you :)
@newyorksteelo awesome i just subscribed i am hitting the sak but i am looking forward to your next great video tomorrow :) keep up the good work you are helping people like me who are still new to the hobby and it is much appreciated
@newyorksteelo i am going to switch my wet/dry out for a 30 gal. long refugium. i was going to make three chambers. first, would be the water inlet and my protien skimmer. second, would be sand, rock, and alge. third, would just be for the return. does this sound like it would get the job done or is there something i can do that would improve it?
@Glissonshoods Yes, I have a video coming out tomorrow that will cover three different approaches when it comes to sump refugiums so stay tuned for that upcoming video.
@newyorksteelo i have been watching a lot of your videos today (great stuff) i have a 125 gal. and recently added a few of my first coral (xenia, trumpet, shrroms) looks great. wanted your thoughts on what to feed them. the fish store sold me phycopure to feed them and some buffer and calcium to dose the tank with. is there something better out there and whats the best way to feed them?
also will be upgrading from wet/dry to a refugium and would love to hear your opinion on how to set up
@Glissonshoods The only coral, of the ones you mentioned which I would manually feed is the trumpet. The others can grow, thrive and live of strong lighting, and will readily multiply if given good water quality. I have a video on how to feed anemones and corals you may want to take a look at to find the answers you seek. Thanks for watching and do not forget to rate my videos :)
question steelo. is it your goal to achieve perfect, stable enough water therefore very rarely having to change the water? To my knowledge water changes are a good thing for a reef correct? Maybe a lil hassel but thats what we sign up for... I have recently set up and nano, very very similar to what your doing, deep sand bed ect. and my corals are THRIVING! I have no experience with the miracle mud but i will be subscribing....Thanks man love the vids good luck!!!
@werunDP Water changes only really benefit in 2 ways. One is to reduce organics and excess proteins such as nitrates, phosphates and the such. In my 30g tank, these dissolved organics are nonexistent due to my more natural form of filtration and so no water changes have been made. Two, water changes can balance the aquarium and replenish major and minor trace elements and for this I am dosing and testing the system. I only advise experts to do this though. Thanks for watching.
thanks for your help i was doing some reasurch a while ago and thats what everyone said to just do water changes and id did this, i even did a 50% water cahange every day for a strait week because thats what everyone recomends to do and that didn't work. So i was looking online last night and i found some really good ideas for freshwater refugiums and everyone that has on says it totally gets rid of there nitrates so im probably gona do that. thanks for the help man.
@masoncomets91 Hmm, good question, but I believe that it is possible if you add a separate tank compartment and turn it into a plated area with lots of lighting where the plants in there will not be picked on by the fish and it may help remove some nutrients. Do not quote me on this, as I am merely making an assumption here and to be honest with you, freshwater systems are quite simple to maintain by doing plain old water changes. Good luck.
I like the video, but am longing to see some updates to the 90 gallon. I am not running a nano although there is lots to be learned from yours, I have a 90 gallon so I would like to see more of yours for helpful hints.
@wesleyforbes I will do an update on the 90g system very soon but nothing has changed. Is it that you would like to see the fish swim around in the tank with some rocks? The last update on the 90g system was a few weeks ago and there are no corals added, no rock work change, no issues, nothing has changed buddy, however, the issue with the stand will be documented once I replace it and many, many updates on the 90g system will be released once I start buying corals for it. Hang in there.
@gmoney1961 They sure do lol, but getting the message across and educating those entering in the hobby is worth more than any pay. They should give me a little something though lol.
@siloex Thanks. I sort of got caught up with something yesterday so I could not make the video but it is coming up soon. Lots to explain so stay tuned for that next video.
@mofoglenn333 I rarely test anymore because I know the system so well but here are my latest water parameters. Ammonia, Nitrite, Nitrate is 0, PH 8.2 to 8.4 (fluctuates from night and day), Phosphates 0.003, Calcium 440ppm, , Alkalinity 3.1, DKH 9, Magnesium 1280, Salinity is a constant 10.25 to 10.26. Those are my water parameters since day one and I still get these numbers whn I test with API and or Salifert test kits.
@TheWarOrphan You are good with 8 bulbs but the more actinics you add, the more PAR you lose. Typically the bluer the light the less intensity and PAR/Lumens output of the bulb. If you go 6 actinics and 2 X 12K bulbs your corals would look awesome but you will see slow growth and possible bleaching on SPS's. Typically, I would not add more than 2 actinics peeking at 420nm, 2 blue bulbs peeking at 460nm and the rest 10,000K. Even still you are losing lots of PAR with this setup.
@dm002a8686 Probably not for SPS corals. Unless you place them way up high under the lights. If you have 4 X 54 watt T5 bulb this means your system is 4 feet long and considering that you said it is 160 gallons, your system must be really wide. Not enough light in my opinion.
@gprime22 I have 5 turbo snails and 3 scarlet reef hermit crabs. The deep sand bed is another story. I have approximately 30 baby nazzarius snails. for your 120g system, I would step up my game on the inverts.
you should have ran your tank with more fish to see if the miracle mud could handle to higher load of nitrated cuz i dont think 2 fish produce noticeable nitrates dont u think?
@memorex0027 Don't forget the corals. Corals produce waste as well and I feed the sps corals every other day. Anemones produce even more waste lol. I think that even with more fish the miracle mud will do it's job in promoting the growth of chaeto which is what will consume the nitrates but with more bio load, there may be an algae problem without a skimmer. All in all, if a system is set up with this exact filtration system, dsb and skimmer, i don't see why it wont be successful.
@memorex0027 The main idea of me emphasizing that you must replicate system applies mostly to the overall filtration method. I also made sure to explain that with more bio load one would expect different results.
@reefkid1 No problem. Be sure to get enough light for your main display and for the refugium, light the refugium 24 hours a day, and set up your 75 gallon systems filtration similar to mine. Good luck and if you have questions i am here. Peace!

@siloex Thanks. I sort of got caught up with something yesterday so I could not make the video but it is coming up soon. Lots to explain so stay tuned for that next video.

does the mud have worms in it to movr the mud around for criculation
reefstarters 1 year ago
@reefstarters No. The life will come from you adding live rock rubble to seed the sand bed with worms and critters.

hey great vid! always really enjoy your vids. what tests do you do on the system? ph,alk, cal, dkh? if so what are those parameters? take care!
mofoglenn333 1 year ago
@mofoglenn333 I rarely test anymore because I know the system so well but here are my latest water parameters. Ammonia, Nitrite, Nitrate is 0, PH 8.2 to 8.4 (fluctuates from night and day), Phosphates 0.003, Calcium 440ppm, , Alkalinity 3.1, DKH 9, Magnesium 1280, Salinity is a constant 10.25 to 10.26. Those are my water parameters since day one and I still get these numbers whn I test with API and or Salifert test kits.

i have 8x54watt 432w good enough for my 90gallon reef? im also wondering if it will be ok for me to have 6 actinics and 2 12k bulbs?
TheWarOrphan 1 year ago
@TheWarOrphan You are good with 8 bulbs but the more actinics you add, the more PAR you lose. Typically the bluer the light the less intensity and PAR/Lumens output of the bulb. If you go 6 actinics and 2 X 12K bulbs your corals would look awesome but you will see slow growth and possible bleaching on SPS's. Typically, I would not add more than 2 actinics peeking at 420nm, 2 blue bulbs peeking at 460nm and the rest 10,000K. Even still you are losing lots of PAR with this setup.

Tank is 5 feet long 2 feet wide 2 feet high my friend , and sump
dm002a8686 1 year ago
@dm002a8686 Not enough light in my opinion.
newyorksteelo 1 year ago
That includes my sump to, I do have tham high up in tank but not keeping there colour???
dm002a8686 1 year ago
@dm002a8686 This whole liters, gallon thing is confusing man. What are the exact dimensions of your main tank in feet or inches.
newyorksteelo 1 year ago
Another great update, my system is 160 Uk gallons i only have 4x 54 watts t5s you have seen my tank I have corals do you think that's enought
dm002a8686 1 year ago
@dm002a8686 Probably not for SPS corals. Unless you place them way up high under the lights. If you have 4 X 54 watt T5 bulb this means your system is 4 feet long and considering that you said it is 160 gallons, your system must be really wide. Not enough light in my opinion.

How many inverts do you have in the 30g? mainly snails/crabs.
I'm thinking for my 120g ill get around 10-15 nassarius snails 20 cerith 2 tubro and 15 hermits along with a sand sifting starfish.
gprime22 1 year ago
@gprime22 I have 5 turbo snails and 3 scarlet reef hermit crabs. The deep sand bed is another story. I have approximately 30 baby nazzarius snails. for your 120g system, I would step up my game on the inverts.

Good video how many power heads do you have in your 30 gallon system
Aperfectcircle5 1 year ago
@Aperfectcircle5 1 power head. The Vortech MP10 which gives me up to 1500 + gallons per hour.

you should have ran your tank with more fish to see if the miracle mud could handle to higher load of nitrated cuz i dont think 2 fish produce noticeable nitrates dont u think?
memorex0027 1 year ago
@memorex0027 Don't forget the corals. Corals produce waste as well and I feed the sps corals every other day. Anemones produce even more waste lol. I think that even with more fish the miracle mud will do it's job in promoting the growth of chaeto which is what will consume the nitrates but with more bio load, there may be an algae problem without a skimmer. All in all, if a system is set up with this exact filtration system, dsb and skimmer, i don't see why it wont be successful.
newyorksteelo 1 year ago
@memorex0027 The main idea of me emphasizing that you must replicate system applies mostly to the overall filtration method. I also made sure to explain that with more bio load one would expect different results.

when i set up my 75 gal reef i will try miracle mud thanks newyorksteelo for recomending it
reefkid1 1 year ago
@reefkid1 No problem. Be sure to get enough light for your main display and for the refugium, light the refugium 24 hours a day, and set up your 75 gallon systems filtration similar to mine. Good luck and if you have questions i am here. Peace!
