I'm buying a 11-12' MX-5 6MT hard-top next year (sept/oct). It's simply the best car to drive south of 45-50K. The 370z for example is much quicker but not nearly as fun to drive as the MX-5. According to the head of the Miata project, the new car will lose 600lbs, get a more rigid SkyActiv chassis and a more efficient SkyActiv Inline-4 engine.
If you are planning on buying a new Miata (which it sounds like you are), it is definitely worth waiting the extra few months for the new 4th gen.

Well, the thing is, everything about the Miata is extremely sensitive. I have not seen any reviews that mention this fact. Most people drive regular cars, vans, trucks, etc. If they try a Miata, the first thing they notice is that everthing is super touchy. The engine is very revvy, throttle response is instant, the steering is lightning quick, very very touchy, and the brakes are very touchy as well. All as it should be as a real sports car. It feels like a sport bike, only safer, and more fun.
167 horsepower isn't really that less. The mini Cooper s 170 horsepower and its selling point is also handling, which doesn't come close to the MX-5's, and yet it costs a hell of a lot more
@igotwhips the proper engine for an RX-8 would have to be a fuel efficent but also powerful and reliable roatry. Seeing as how RX mean rotary experiment

I had a 1990 Miata. Was the most fun I EVER had (I drive a Vette now). The car was just so small I didn't feel safe with all the SUVs on the road. I could see under SUVs better then I could see around them :( Vette is similar but as an extra 1000 pounds and a roof that make me feel more secure. If you have never driven a Miata get off your ass and find one on a used car lot and have the drive of your life!

I have always liked the MX-5 untill I drove one at work. I am 6'3" and just a couple of inches too tall for the car. It was a Mazda Speed model so I was excited until I sat in the little thing. I can fit in an RX-7 or 8 just fine. Check my channel for some of the cool cars I drive!

C'mon guys. The Versatrek AWD system keeps you glued to the road. And styling is just so innovative it makes the Alfa 8C look like a garbage truck. GM should just cancels all its brands and bring back pontiac and make nothing but the Aztek. The Aztek never made it big because of the lack of decent colors offered. If they make 2012 Aztek with the same design but with Lime Green the world for sure will never end.

After the traditional compact british roadsters died out such as the Austin Healey 3000, the Japanese decided to resurrect it in the early 90s which brought the roadster back to the market with reliability. Thus it stays true to the formula, "lightweight and small engine". It's probably one of the enjoyable cars of all time. They didn't say british roadsters were for women back then... The cars are just getting bigger...

you don't research much do you? the PONTIAC website lists ALL curb weights from the base model convertible all the way to the GXP Coupe. the base model convertible weighs 2860lbs. there is no Solstice that weighs 2600lbs. and even if it was 2600lbs, its still 480lbs heavier than the MX-5.
now if you can't believe MANUFACTURER listed curb weights, then you sir, are quite hard-headed.
@mattbenluke Yes but stock for stock, non-turbo solstice vs Mx5, the solstice gets blown out of the water by the Mx5. While the Ecotec engine has yet to proof its reliability, Mazda has a track record of bullet proof reliability with their roadster. While the Solstice's Top is a nightmare to operate requiring you to get out of the car and manually lift the fake trunk the Miata top design is a dream to operate. Pound for pound the Miata is the better car with superior design all around.

Stunningly good car. I say stunning because every time I drive a Miata, I'm floored at how good they are. Even the first-gen ones are still an absolute gas to put through their paces. Anyone who knows anything about driving gets it. These are proper driving machines, period.

Nice review. I own an MX-5, maybe it's a California thing but I've never owned a car where not only people turn heads, but I get compliments at almost every drive through, or gas station stop. I don't get where this "chick car insults" comes in to play. A lot of older men and women own em here too, and they also wave when driving past which is pretty different. Anyhow, I love it. For what it is, it's my idea of a perfect sports car.

C'mon guys. The Versatrek AWD system keeps you glued to the road. And styling is just so innovative it makes the Alfa 8C look like a garbage truck. GM should just cancels all its brands and bring back pontiac and make nothing but the Aztek. The Aztek never made it big because of the lack of decent colors offered. If they make 2012 Aztek with the same design but with Lime Green the world for sure will never end.

You're probably not familiar with the story behind the car. After the traditional compact british roadsters died out such as the Austin Healey 3000, the Japanese decided to resurrect it in the early 90s which brought the roadster back to the market with reliability. Thus it stays true to the formula, "lightweight and small engine". It's probably one of the enjoyable cars of all time. They didn't say british roadsters were for women back then... The cars are just getting bigger...

um no, that's not impossible. the Solstice DOES weigh that much. you might wanna go research that.
and again, its not always about horsepower. just because a car has more power, doesn't necessarily mean its better. i can show you PLENTY examples of that.
and what's your point about it having a 2.0L turbo I4? it seems you're thinking just because a car has more power and forced induction, it automatically makes it a better car.

you don't research much do you? the PONTIAC website lists ALL curb weights from the base model convertible all the way to the GXP Coupe. the base model convertible weighs 2860lbs. there is no Solstice that weighs 2600lbs. and even if it was 2600lbs, its still 480lbs heavier than the MX-5.
now if you can't believe MANUFACTURER listed curb weights, then you sir, are quite hard-headed.

@mattbenluke Yes but stock for stock, non-turbo solstice vs Mx5, the solstice gets blown out of the water by the Mx5. While the Ecotec engine has yet to proof its reliability, Mazda has a track record of bullet proof reliability with their roadster. While the Solstice's Top is a nightmare to operate requiring you to get out of the car and manually lift the fake trunk the Miata top design is a dream to operate. Pound for pound the Miata is the better car with superior design all around.

if it was for women it would be all decorated and feature style over performance, this is the bare minimum, except for the sunroof which just adds to the fun factor of enjoying the drive, which is the point of it, not to show off flashy style like a "womans car"... but the smile on all new mazdas is kinda feminine tho
