I call bollocks on this. This song was recorded at Wizard Studios in Belfast, this clearly is not that studio. The guy behind the board is not Davy Shannon who produced/engineered/mixed the track, nor is it Davy Smyth who owns Wizard Studio. Great song by a great band but this video was clearly shot well after the single took off and there is only one recorded version of Teenage Kicks.
Never mind the bloody voice listen to the best twin-guitar sound since the dawn of time. The 'Tones were, and indeed still are, all about the O'Neill brothers. And lest we forget, Sharkey never wrote any of those songs.
Great tunes and never taking themselves too seriously. Turn on a top 40 radio station now and what do you hear? Over produced cliched advertising jingles. Of course, I am an old fart so what would I know!
bla bla bla thecoment under mine is absolute shit the undertones played on top of the pops and thats as far as it went.U2 play pheonix and any place they want too lol. BUT THIN LIZZY IS THE BEST BAND EVER TO COME FROM IRELAND...............
One of the most underrated pop/rock groups in history. The Undertones were about a million times better than that pretenious shite from U2 and The Clash. Better guitar playing than Edge too.
well, theyre not better than the clash, simply because the clash covered a multitude of genres and did more than just give them justice. but i agree with you on the u2 part, u2 is terrible. all they do is have bono see how long he can hold a syllable, so then people dont realize teh shoddy musicianship.
@DEWadict some early u2 was pretty good theres some stuff on war and october that is great- but i agree for the most part! For my money its a draw between the jam the clash and the damned -though id put the undertones in close running!
U2 is fucking garbage yeah but nah man The Clash at their peak were a goddamn great band how can you even like the Undertones and not like "Lost in the Supermarket", "Rudy Can't Fail" etc?
This is a video of the group recording for a Peel session at BBC studios, so not exactly a "fraud". Countless sessions were done just like this with bands playing all together and vocals refined later if necessary. Sometimes the results came out better than the proper studio recordings, such as the Smiths' "Hatful of Hollow" which are Peel and Jensen sessions for the BBC recorded exactly like this Undertones session.
Feargal is alive and well and advises the government on culture!
It wasn't until after Good Vibrations released the EP that The Undertones came to England. I can definately say that this is NOT them recording the song.
People always say how well produced this EP was (even Q magazine said Teenage Kicks was "oddly the best produced track on the album" when reviewing their greatest hits) but nobody ever says why. It's because this was the only stuff that was recorded by Davy Smith before The Undertones signed with Sire records.
Thanks for setting the record straight. My jaw dropped watching this, as if someone had just happened to capture the Ramones cutting Blitzkrieg Bop. Pretty unlikely.
This is an absolute FRAUD! My dad recorded and produced the Teenage Kicks EP! His name is Davy Smyth and it was recorded by him at Wizard Sound Studios, Anne Street, Belfast... his studio above his boutique (also called Wizard). Only the studio is credited on the EP because he was paid a flat fee by Terry Hooley to record all the Good Vibrations' Label bands and he didn't insist on a personal credit (big mistake).
It's simply stunning that they happened to chose this particular recording session to make a film about recording studio techniques. At the time they would have had no idea what this song would eventually become. What a find. Nice vintage Helios mixing console too.
The Helios was not used to record the song. It was actually recorded on one of the first Soundcraft desks ever made. The same desk was used live by Brian Ferry in Paris and then shipped to Belfast to Davy Smyth's Wizard recording studio. The desk finally died in 1992. My dad still has the original Studer A80 16 track that it was recorded on though.
That's because they DON'T KNOW how it was recorded! I was really annoyed about this. It's one thing for them not to give the producer credit but to attempt to completely re-write history is just rediculous.
Granted, it's pretty interesting seeing how the song comes together, although it's pretty strange hearing the vocals without the instrumentals and vice versa.
real punk unlike the majority of the shit today
