Having now watched all the videos, it was a clear, moonlit night so he had sufficient visibility to fly even without the qualification for night flying and besides, he had an instructor on board who was certainly qualified to fly in all weathers and at night.

He took off into marginal weather. People who know nothing about flying keep covering this up.  He flew into IMC, became disoriented, and flew a perfectly good aircraft into the ground. This was no accident. It was a mishap and 100% preventable. If you ask me, he should have gotten the Darwin award for his actions!! LOL-accident!

Double check your weather. Besides the NATOPs says that night flying is essentially instrument flying. He was not qualified to fly in instrument conditions. Civilian Flight training is very lax. It is easy for anyone with enough money to scrape by and get any type of rating, even become a CFI. Yeah, he had 300 hours in 17 years-what is that like 2 hours a month-that's enough experience to be dangerous.
