I think Seattle's biggest problem was that it rested on its laurels as "America's Most Livable City" and it took it all for granted. It also allowed the newcomers and collaborating locals (money talks!) to redo everything in the name of gentrification and commercialization. It's sad as it has changed the city's character almost beyond recognition. In it, I also think Seattle lost its sense of humor along the way as a result. I still like Seattle but I prefer the Old Seattle,
Great times in Seattle during the 90s. I watched just about every episode of that show when it started in the 80s. John was interviewed a few years ago and he didn't think he could make fun of communties the same way he could back then but I'm sure he could still make fun of Tacoma.
this humor is so orignal. I wish it was still around cause now i feel like people are just trying to be redicously random to be funny wich is not funny at all.
After Frederick and Nelson's closed, my grandpa Larry retired from playing accordion. It seems the good old days of downtown retired as well then. I miss them both.
Back when Seattle was still cool. Still had a few rough edges, still a bit of a backwater & proud of it! We liked our rock loud & straigh ahead, we did our own thing, still had a sense of humor. Now it's a borderline dictatorship ruled by PC thugs & is the new hollywood light, perfect playground for the sean penn set..
Thanks so much for sharing, still one of my fave tv shows ever!
The Doghouse was an institution serving lousy food for years. I kind of miss it. Last time I was there was NY Eve about '92 or '93. Garish decor, ancient waitresses, guys in plaid suits with their beehive hairdo dates in the bar. And the guy who kept coming in the front door yelling "Where's my c**ks**k*ng
39 cent hamburger!?!?" It was the best New Years ever.
I have completed the first of what I think will be 4 or 5 DVD's of my personal favorite Almost Live! skits. These will contain all of the series of Billy Quan, Lame List, High Five'n White Guys, AL Training Films, Bill Nye, Speed Walker, Middle Management Suck-ups, Nature Walk with Chuck, DJ Randy Scott, Worst Girlfriend in the World, Cops and many others non series skits from my 250 shows. These DVD's will run about 4 hours & 15 minutes each.
The yuppies ruined Seattle and took away it's personality and sense of humor. It's just become a Corporate McCity with a Mayor McCheese (Greg Nickels). They will keep tearing down every bit of Old Seattle until it's gone. Dick's and the Monorail are probably next.
Let's hope Portland does not endure the same fate. Not too badly anyway!
Portland was ruined with the Pearl District. Just another yuppie nightmare of pretentious pricks. Hawthorne and Belmont aren't cool anymore, NW23rd and Vaseline Alley are just empty shells of what once was, plus Weinhardts is gone!
I know--Seattle was so much cooler when I was growing up. Now so much of it has gone so...GENERIC. A lot of the little quirky things that made it really Seattle are gone, and there's a level of pretention that didn't exist twelve, thirteen years ago. :(
Hilarious! I miss watching 'Almost Live' on Sunday evenings. Ross Shafer was great on there too before is bailed and moved to Hollywood. Loved the 'Ballard Vice' skits with Shafer and John Keister. Somewhere on tape I have Shafer's 'Farewell' show. Thnx for the post!
I thought the "High Five'n White Guys was one of the funniest skits on Almost Live!. Their 13 skits I have in my DVD collection are. The first one (unnamed), Mariners Fever, Big Adventure, Brand New Car, Day Off, Back to School, On the Waterfront, Go Sight Seeing, On the Eastside, In the Pouring Rain, In Ballard, Downtown Adventure & In Canada.
I think I may have about 5 or 6 of these skits on my DVD collection, I will have to see what I have, but with over 85 hours of programing, it may take a while.
It would be nice for it to come back but I think the time they went off the air was probably the right time to end it. 1999 would be the year Seattle lost itself and its sense of humor with the WTO riots. What an awful idea to host that damned thing! That was when Old Seattle really died.
I lived there in the 90s... some really good times.
The whole thing is a slum now.

@spikedawg1970 I guess Portland is going to become the Seattle of the 2010's! Only with better mass transportation and more strip clubs.

Were any of these the one that took place in Kent?

I don't recall any of the High Five'n White guys in Kent, but there were many skits that took place in Kent or stories and skits about Kent.
