Hello mrs. Chua. I have a question, for coloring the girls face and eyes, did you use gradients or the mesh tool (I think that is the name, I use a spanish version of illustrator, but I think you know what I mean)?
Yes, I think I was using the Pen tool exclusively (or almost exclusively) for this. It was some time ago so I don't remember exactly, but I use the Pen tool most of the time in Illustrator anyway.
Milowerx.....its called fill and stroke in adobe illustrator. The fill is the blob of colour and the stroke is the outline. Very easy to change from one to the other. Just the click of a button. These are located down the bottom of the left hand side tool bar. Fill looks like a square and the stroke looks like a square with a hole in it. Hope this helps.
In the beginning you made a black blob to rough in the shape of the face and then in the next second it switches to that blob now being an outline. How did you do that? Did you just end up deleting the blobby shape or did you outline the blobby shape?
@milowerx The video is really sped up, from what I remember. It was a test more of the video capture software than a how-to video. I work with the Pen tool; I form shapes and tweak them by adjusting the anchor points.
Nice work now I've read your detailed on you work, But when you say you imported the sketch to illustrator. What do you mean? And when simply drawing on illustrator do you use a wacom tablet. I love to draw and I'm good at it. But the program with all the steps, tools gets complicated. I can't figure out how to learn what each tool is for and how to use it when its needed. how did you manage to learn Illustrator being self taught?????? I have the complete CS5 & still get stuck
@emierya I do my sketches on paper or in Photoshop. I import them into Illustrator to use as a guideline for the artwork.
I use a Wacom Cintiq for my work these days, but I used to use an Intuous.
As with any program, it takes time to learn it and get familiar with the tools. I have been using Illustrator for some years now, and before that I used Freehand. You just have to practice. Turning on Tooltips may help you remember what tool is what.
I can't believe I didn't know you had a youtube page. Its very interesting to see you in action, I wish I was that quick in Illustrator.
You mentioned using a cintiq, which model do you use the 12wx or 21ux? I got the itch to buy the 12wx ever since I used the 21ux in the animation lab at school but I see so many mixed reviews and my patience in waiting for a newer generation of it is waning. If its the 12wx I'd appreciate your opinion of it and I may consider taking the plunge lol.
@Sypheck I use a 21UX. They released a new version of the 21 last year (2009) I think. The newer model is more scratch resistant than my model from what I heard, and has more levels of pressure sensitivity. It's not as essential for working in Illustrator (although I do use it). I find it most helpful when I am working on sketches - it has almost entirely replaced paper and pencil sketches for me. IMO the 21 is a better buy since it gives you more space. Hope that helps!
@3iHard Not really. I was trying out a screen capture software with some friends at the time. While some people find the video helpful, it is not meant to be an educational video. It is how I myself work in Illustrator, but most people have their own preferences on how to work with any software.
illustrator is cool an all... but just seems like so much unnecessary technical work. I would stick to digital painting like in photoshop and painter for high detail illustrations. Maybe use illustrator for smaller vector simple works.
what tool are you using to do your shading...example: the color gradient applied above the eye fading within a selection. Its an awesome technique but i couldnt follow how exactly it is done
Goes so fast you cant really see whats going on and get your techniques but the outcome is nice. Would be cool to see this more in a tutorial type of way
Hey Sygnin, Great Work. At 1:57 when working on the belt and a few other spots I noticed you create a shape and it looks as if it masks out the shape in the layer underneath so you can clearly see your sketch. How do you do that? Or are you creating the shape and then using your pathfinder to create the mask. Also when you overlap shapes to create the highlights and shadows, what pathfinder tools do you use to define your new shapes. Your tips would greatly help me. Again awesome work!! Thanks.
I agree that while these things are neat to see, the practical usage of them is next to nothing. I've been using AI for years and I too had a hard time following. A video tutorial just going over a couple of the main concepts, that alone would be extremely helpful.
Your control and understanding of layer hierarchy as well as your beautiful style renders me a big fan. Wish I could talk Illustrator with you, best of wishes - E
I might, in the future. I did this as a test of the video software, it's not meant to teach you how to use Illustrator. However I might do some others later that actually show how to do things :)
@Horace01 I go crazy with Layers, they are a trully genius feature but you have to have a lot of control to work with them. 8,000 layers?!! aaaaaaaaaaaaah!
I'd have to agree. I'm an illustrator "power user" and I'm still having difficulty discerning which tools are being utilized. A voice over track would be great too. Nice rendering though!
It's a trick I learned drawing comics. When you flip the art it's easier to see what's wrong with it. I do it with Photoshop too and on a lightbox in real life.
That's really cool. I wish it wasn't going so fast so I could see what you're doing there. I'm getting into vector art lately, but it's such a different process from what I'm used to :\

Whateva1983 - I use gradient swatches together with clipping masks. I don't use the gradient mesh tool, in general.
Hope that helps, glad you like the work!
