@RandomTorok Thanks for expressing your concern, however I would like to state that msconfig isnt a diagnostic tool since it doesn't give you feedback on how your system is performing.It IS a configuration utility that lets you control certain aspects of your computer,which directly affect performance btw. There are various ways of configuring your system by other more complex utilities, however, msconfig is readily available and easy to use. I'm an IT technician w/more than 10yrs.of expirience.

@341873 I'm an also an IT tech, but he's right. Msconfig is best used for TEMPORARILY disabling startup services when trying to track down a fault.

Some other services still make calls services that aren't actually running, which will still slow down your system slightly, and generate a lot of unnecessary errors in the event log. In rare (extremely rare in my experience) cases it can actually cause major system problems.

Use services.msc instead. It's a cleaner way of doing the same thing :)

@rollaphat1 Thanks. My original intention was for an intuitive tutorial. From my experience, I have learned that the average user is intimidated by the more appropriate services.msc utility. I tailored this video for a much more broader audience. Yes, I know some programs will call other services, but please note I have provided a list of services that I recommend disabling. Granted this,it's probable there will be no conflict and if so, I have duly noted in this video to re-enable the services.

heres one that one can try that wont disable all those services

control panel -> classic view -> appearence and watnot -> themes(should be somewhere i havent used vista in a while) and change the theme to windows classic. now you have no clear things whatsoever and windows vista will operate OK. but then again you installed vista just for the perdy colors so it defeats that

When Vista is in Win98 Modus (classic mode) without any graphical affects at all, it runs almost half the speed of Linux Mint with full Compiz+extras... but of course Win98-modus is still faster than Vista native. All things considered, I wouldn't use Windows, if speed is an issue. Not Windows7 either. You can only make bloatware a tiny bit faster. It will always be bloatware, no matter how much you try to hack it.

The problem with Microsoft is, that they claim to be the best, even when they are not. Take security for example, Linux is IMO much more secure than Windows. And it has only little to do with market share. It has to do with the way it is built and maintained, and what it tries to teach the users about "best use". Like the SoftwareCenter fx. or the password prompt instead of an OK button in UAC.

@shooterboyz12 all security center is...is a stupid small resource using REMINDER problem that tells you like a little child if something isn't to "IT'S" liking...it being the operating system. disabling security center WONT prevent your antivirus from working just fine. it may prevent certain other small things like certain types of updates or something else from working until you turn it back on . i've had it turned off on my old xp pro 64 machine for 5 years..never had a problem or virus

@shooterboyz12 chances are YOU DON't want to disable everything on startup. make an exact list of all the start up items you see listed on msconfig then click the start up tab. ( you may have to move your mouse and left click and drag to the right..the left part of that tiny screen to show more of the NAME of the startup program) I can tell you exactly what should be disabled depending on your needs and what i know from experience won't cause a problem."adobe reader, google update

What's the point doing this? Speeding up Windows Vista wich is low already on 512 MB RAM (1 GB is minimum) is just waste of time. Even you have 1 GB, Vista still freezes sometimes and doing all things pretty low. On 512 MB Windows XP is only OS, that will run normally.
