This is really cool! I was so worried the thing was just going to flop down while you were still forming it, but figures it didn't because you know what you're doing!
By the way, to you have your own studio, or is this a class or do you rent space somewhere? I'm asking because where you are looks awfully familiar...
@timseepots i have pics, but im not able to video it... go on FB and look for the group "Jake Jarrell's Art" links u to the work ive published this year =] some of it is still plastic, some fresh out of the high fire kiln. my centered 50 pounds and the beginning of my cylinder is posted, have a look =]
i made a bowl a little bigger then that. im only 17. and it was actually pretty much perfect. about half an inch thickness all around. THEN when i was trimming it. we had no bat for it O.o so i put a piece of plywood onto the wheel and centered it ontop of that. i got all done with trimming. and then i steppe down on the paddle accidentaley and the bowl exploded into a million pieces =P was a real bummer.. my teacher is mad cause he wanted to display it ^^
Wow! As a beginning potter I'm imressed. I actually said (out loud) OH NO! when you collapsed the pot at the end! LOL Great info on all you posts Tim - thanks!
Did you ever see Fight Club, Tim? "I felt like destroying something beautiful." If not, I guess the quote doesn't make sense. But that just means you should watch the movie! Great work! I like the tip with the rim.
boy? excuse me? naw, psych. I am a boy. Anyway, seriously, check out that movie. Fight Club. I'm gonna be looking for you to say that you saw it. Or, better yet, quote it in a video. That would make you youtube potter of the century. They have an award for that, I think.
i was enjoying the video and suddenly heard myself gasp out loud. my heart can't handle that kind of shock tim!! ouch! warn us before you smash up such a nice piece. or use some editing to avoid inflicting pain on us viewers.
Its just dirt. If this is so upsetting you might want to try it yourself. throw something and no matter how good it comes out wreck it smoosh it up. Be free to explore and experiment without the obligation to have to keep everything.
I do not have a pug mill and probably never will. I went right over and wedged it up. The bowl wasn't perfect It looked ok on film but not good enough for me its better to get rid of a piece like that right away before it takes over the studio.
Great tip about turning out the top to keep it round while shaping the side. That will help me a lot with the bigger stuff I think. No more ovals; yay!
That was awesome Ahh I wish I could throw like u dude.

does reducing the speed of the wheel really stop the bowl from collapsing ? i have a lot of trouble managing that.

I love the comparison of big bowls to children, and I agree!

ps- how do you trim something like that? Do you use a really big bat, or just trim it right side up, or what?
offcenteredpotter 2 years ago
Really big bat.

everything is so neat and tidy in your studio. I wish I could keep things that clean.
offcenteredpotter 2 years ago
I only pick up for videos, its is kinda like telling the rest in the room to shut up I'm taping and I care enough to clean some.

that tip about the rim is really gonna come in handy, thank you, and did you wedge it in sections or all in 1 25lb lump?
ratmfan105 2 years ago
I think I did it in sections Im too lazy to do it all at once.

cynda99 2 years ago

"where did you do psycho boy?" was the question asked by pitt before norton says "I felt like destroying something beautiful."

Ah! Man, now I feel stupid. Nothing's more embarrassing than saying something stupid where everyone can see it. I am Jack's Total Humiliation.
