  • That 12 string playing sounded just like Blind Willie McTell's playing.

  • jj & the rest love you *lol* but was the best ironie for idiots ... *ggg*

  • Mistress of the twelve-string as well, if that is Janis playing, which I think it must be.

  • I wasn't stoned when I saw her Live in Frankfurt Germany and she was awesome onstage singing her heart out for us. There will never be another woman singer like her. She gave her whole heart and soul to each song and when she finished there wasn't a person who wasn't screaming for more. And then Jimi Hendrix walked out onstage and played what a great concert that was.

  • @mikehouston1 I'm JEALOUS :[ but what an awesome memory that you'll have forever :]

  • Thanks for posting. Great song and rendition. Not sure why you mention it as an Odetta classic....this song has been covered by so many people since 1925, Odetta being only one of many. It's not likely that Odetta was Janis' inspiration :)

  • i miss you janis....

  • Wow, I never knew she could sing in that style. Did she ever record any of this stuff in a studio?

  • sound like blind willie mc tell here !!!!! check him out if ya aint herd him

  • @newmacgirl You're right! The guitar is very 'Blind Willie'.

  • 3 Pubes have forgotten the faces of their fathers!

  • she sounds like Bessie Smith. what a soulful voice she's brilliant

  • two people carelessly clicked the dislike button

  • Happy birthday beautiful woman<3

  • Seriously? Janis Joplin? Oh what a treat. Ms. Joplin never knew I loved her, but she does now that I have confessed. Janis you have a lot of love to carry you forth from so many people. Rest easy and go on.

  • Janis-you live on ! Nothin'careless about our love for you.

  • Fine Song!

    Thanks for posting!

    Aloha from Hawaii!

  • oh susan

  • this is mint top one X,i love this tune, never heard it covered by j.before.ace

  • Doc Boggs did it to.

  • o''' my god what a song.............. is this ledbelly song by janis? it would wrong to say i still in love w janis ???

  • Wow--Janis is soo cool in this one--thanks for posting!

  • Used to hear her at the Barn in Scotts Valley 1966, and heard her on my first acid trip so she is deep in my unconscious. meleix do honor to her by checking out all the singers from 1900 to 1960s.

  • Great Leadbelly-style guitar, too.

  • This what she sounded like when she sang at Threadgill's on Wednesday nights back in the mid-60's.

  • the brightest lights go out the fastest but Janis at least gave her all to her music and thats why she was, and still is, great!

  • Oh Janis, Janis. I loved you then and I love you now.

  • no.3 daughter is call after herselfe

  • i love this!

  • It's her... she's singing the style that set her free.. .the way it touched her when she heard it... she had to sing it... just this way...

  • I can believe it is her. Long before booze and cigarettes ( the intentional shaper of voices for many artists). thanks for bringing this Gem forward. She kept a tradition that many others had abandoned.

  • ok ! I stand corrected,but not convinced

  • It is most definitely her, she just sounded a little younger, and her style was more country-bluesish in the early 60's...before all of those bottles of Southern Comfort rasped up her vocal cords:)

  • yea its her, im not really a fan of her style at this time, its too country soundin for me. bt no it is definately her

  • Folkies were the ones who gleaned great songs from their local record stashes and heard feelings and expressions worth preserving. Country? Yeah, Negro-blues country. In her case the songs of the great female artists. In the very same way that Eric Clapton sings "country".

  • Does anyone know what the approximate date is for this recording?

I just can't pick a favorite Janis song - it's impossible to choose!

  • I wonder who is on the 12 string.

  • Yes her voice is so bright here, sad what drinking can do

  • Wow! I'd forgotten how great she was before she fucked up her voice with smoke and southern comfort.

  • She's beautiful. What a great song and voice. I wish I was old enough to have seen and heard her in person.

  • me 2! how old r u?

  • wow this is awsome where did you find this? the earliest recording of janis i have ever heard was what good will drinking do

my god you could just here it in her voice, that power and vulnerability

  • I have a song I found on a file sharing program, its called Mary Jane, same voice, same piano sound. Craziness!

  • @DirtyNachoDipper Post it, man.

  • Piano sound? She's playing a guitar.

  • That sure got me! Thanx, had to give it another listen, sounded soo much like a piano!

  • this is what;s it all about.. she is the one..

  • She was awesome...awesome...awesome! I love her.

  • thank you for this. I cry when I listen

  • This shows Janis Joplin's talent as much as anything.

  • Love this early Joplin stuff.

  • Id not known that Janis did a version of this-but stands to reason-Bessie was an inspiration.

  • Como pôde existir uma artista dessas?! Incrível! Criou seu próprio estilo às sobras dos de outros...

  • Wonderful! thank you

  • Even at young age,you can tell this lady will become one of the most unforgettable musicians of her time..i wonder how Odetta feels knowing Janis looks up to her,i bet she's so proud.

  • The calm befor e the storm!! This must've been while Janis was still in San Francisco about to meet Big Brother. It's obvious that she learnt to sing from all the black blues singers!

  • scarlett Janis recorded these songs in Austin coffehouse and at threadgill's she was exellent singer in all ways

  • Awesome, these are some of my favorite Janis recordings, when it's just her and a guitar.

  • Knock me out! Thank you for posting such a rarity! Kudos to KosmicJanis for turning me onto this gem! Peace.

  • Absolutely amazing. I don't know where you get all these rare pieces of magic, but thank you. [= You have some of the best Janis videos on youtube.

  • Pure class!! Fantastic! Well done babe.

    Peace.

  • Beautiful, thank you. Peace.
