It really does sound a lot like Blind Willie McTell playin that 12string,very astute observation there J ,l just love this performance buy Jan,she was the one an only an stole my heart years ago ,an when l discover somthing as wonderful as this tune ,it just melts my heart, she is still missed...
I wasn't stoned when I saw her Live in Frankfurt Germany and she was awesome onstage singing her heart out for us. There will never be another woman singer like her. She gave her whole heart and soul to each song and when she finished there wasn't a person who wasn't screaming for more. And then Jimi Hendrix walked out onstage and played what a great concert that was.
@barbergurl you must be stoned now to say that dumb shit, u have no concept of what good music is lol, everything I hear in today music hurt my ears shut up
you know what everyone always alludes to her as ugly but if she were alive today one of those make overs would make her look like a queen, not that she even needs that just saying....

Thanks for posting. Great song and rendition. Not sure why you mention it as an Odetta classic....this song has been covered by so many people since 1925, Odetta being only one of many. It's not likely that Odetta was Janis' inspiration :)
Seriously? Janis Joplin? Oh what a treat. Ms. Joplin never knew I loved her, but she does now that I have confessed. Janis you have a lot of love to carry you forth from so many people. Rest easy and go on.
Used to hear her at the Barn in Scotts Valley 1966, and heard her on my first acid trip so she is deep in my unconscious. meleix do honor to her by checking out all the singers from 1900 to 1960s.
I can believe it is her. Long before booze and cigarettes ( the intentional shaper of voices for many artists). thanks for bringing this Gem forward. She kept a tradition that many others had abandoned.
It is most definitely her, she just sounded a little younger, and her style was more country-bluesish in the early 60's...before all of those bottles of Southern Comfort rasped up her vocal cords:)
Folkies were the ones who gleaned great songs from their local record stashes and heard feelings and expressions worth preserving. Country? Yeah, Negro-blues country. In her case the songs of the great female artists. In the very same way that Eric Clapton sings "country".
Even at young age,you can tell this lady will become one of the most unforgettable musicians of her time..i wonder how Odetta feels knowing Janis looks up to her,i bet she's so proud.
The calm befor e the storm!! This must've been while Janis was still in San Francisco about to meet Big Brother. It's obvious that she learnt to sing from all the black blues singers!
Still developing, but this performance loaded with promise that she brought through to bloom.
