  • Orr is the only player who would have deserved these ridiculous salaries players get today... the greatest player on and off the ice...

  • BOBBY ORR epitomizes what a sports hero should be.

  • One thing that doesn't seem to get a lot of attention regarding Sir Bobby is that he never cashed a cheque from the Blackhawks. He said he felt he never earned it.

While he may have had more than the average Joe, he was by no means "set for life" the way these guys are now, with 7-figure signing bonuses.

His cool, humble reaction to scoring a great goal is what every kid should be aware of.

Best hilight is him sliding across his own net to block a shot, with hands low to maximize coverage.

  • I remember those days well... Thanks for sharing the memories...

  • the best...EVER

  • Yes Bobby Orr is the best hockey player of all time. If he didn't have messed up knees who know what more he could have done.

  • FUCKING #1 you all better know this!!!

  • The best player of all time!!!

  • Wow, the first play, is that on the pk? Man...that's how you kill a penalty haha

I too think Bobby was better, played for way less time than Gretzky, was a defenseman, and still scored unimaginable numbers.

There's professionals, and then there's Bobby, they used to say.

  • @Milhouse224 No no...you have it wrong......there are players, there are stars, there are super stars, and there is Bobby Orr!!!

  • Orr Revolutionized game mostly due to increasing its popularity. the owner of the p flyers saw people lining up to buy tickets for a team in last place in 1968 and decided to go for a nhl franchise.

  • hid blue line move at 2.51 is to this day not matched by todays players

  • Yeah, Bobby, you just might have encouraged some youngsters to play hockey.

This man is the epitome of modesty.

  • Is it true that bobby orr smoked cigarettes between his shifts?

  • Pretty sure he never smoked..Lefleur on the other hand probably smoked between periods..but never on the bench.

  • Thats what i thought but my friend told me otherwise and for some reason he seemed really sure. lol i cant imagine any hockey player smoking between shifts it's just retarded. I know Nikilai Khabibulin used to smoke between periods.

  • @YungZ905 "Retarded"?? Grow up and learn the English language!!

  • @a3her I don't understand why all the comments about smoking? Who cares? No one flinches if people do something illegal, but oh my god, if someone were to have a cigarette!!! Miitant non-smokers should go jump off a cliff!!

  • @canrockfan HUH?? Who cares is right. Someone about a year ago (at a be up to date on the conversation) asked if Orr smoked...I answered that he didn't and said Lafleur may have in the dressing room between periods. Thanks for making an astute comment, adding to the thread. 4 hard ass comments from a new commenter...well at least you are an Orr fan...you may want to light one up to calm your nerves.

  • @YungZ905 Where the hell did you hear that?? Like I said in earlier comments, "so what"? I don't understand the anti-smoking mentality!! Goddammit, if someone lights up a joint it's ok....but if someone lights a cigarrette it's a sin!!?? All you ani-smokers GO FUCK YOURSELVES!!!

  • Best ever at NHL Forward:Gretzky,defence:Orr,Goalie:........ but Orr have 3 Hart trophy and Gretzky 0 Norris ...thats all folks

  • I personally think bobby orr is better, but they are two completely different players. orr is a defence man and gretzky is a forward

  • Gretzky was a great player but he couldn't carry Orr's jockstrap. The game was much different in Bobby's era and he didn't have Anderson, Messier, Kurri, Coffey and a goon like Semenko to protect him. Orr was and still is a class act and he changed the way the game is played.

  • 100% Correct my friend. Bobby Orr carried the Bruins on his back (and his knees). He literally took control of every game and Esposito should be grateful to Bobby as he was the reason Espo scored so much. Gretzky was great and he made everybody on the ice better but he had amazing players all around him in Messier, Kurri, and Coffey. Orr had to do it mostly by himself. Plus Orr could do much more than Gretzky. In addition to scoring and passing, Orr could hit defend and fight.

  • you also cant compare Orr and Gretzky in the speed department. From the highlights ive seen Orr made ppl around him seem like they were standing still... Gretzky made plays from behind the net

  • @WeepyD I don't understand your comment about not having Anderson, Messier, Kurri, Coffey and Semenko. Does that have something to do with Orr's talent? Anyway, Orr is the best there ever was and ever will be!! The game misses Bobby.

  • @canrockfan Orr played with some great players but he never had the luxury of playing with the guys that Gretzky played with. I am simply stating that Gretzky was protected his whole career and played in a different era than when Orr did. Orr changed not only how a defensman plays the game, he controlled the entire play when he had posession of the puck.

  • a3her...."anyone of todays nhl player could go back in time and dominate. stop saying he's the best ever. omfg".

Sure. This from some dumbass 19 yr old kid. Run along now, son, and thanks for the insight

  • LOL!!

  • The current NHL commissioner or any of his cronies might make a comment like that too.

  • pure skill - no ego - cool guy...

why did helmets and fighting become part of the sport?

  • fighting has been a part of the sport since day 1 fool

  • Orr uttered one of the great understatements ever when he said that maybe he influenced a couple of young players.

    He influenced everybody.

There will never be anybody remotely close to having the greatness of Bobby Orr.

  • Greatest hockey player ever. Period. Gretzky can't compare because all he could do was score. Orr was an amazing two way player. 99 didn't know shit about defense and never fought.

  • Thank you ironfist! People tell me I'm crazy when I say the exact same thing. It's nice to know that I'm not the only one who thinks Orr was the greatest ever! I proudly say that even though Orr retired before i was even born.

  • The greatest hockey player who ever lived. And pure class. Thanks for the memories Bobby.

  • do u no anything about hockey? Orr was the best ever

  • If you took away the advantage of learning from the old school, they would have no shot. Only a few modern players would dominate during the golden era of hockey

  • orr is wat beter than gretzky

  • its a damn shame he had to retire so early...................bobby orr is the best

  • a3her shutup

  • OK

The real stat..the one that wins games..the only stat that truly counts is this. While you are on the ice who scores and how much. While on the ice Gretzky has 3520 goals for 2285 against..a game average of .83 (1487 games). Orr has tgf of 1651 and tga of 781 for a 1.46 per game average (596 games, 66/67 n/a). Much of Gretzky's career he was a detriment to his team if there was no power play,Orr's numbers never came close to being inverted..Gretzky was horrid as a 2 way player for 10 years

  • When you score that much no one cares whether you're a horrible two-way player, & he wasn't cause he sure killed lots of penalties and got lots of SHG's & assists. I can't see how anyone can argue that it's easier to be on the ice for a goal against even strength as opposed to killing a penalty. Unless you argue that the team with the man advantage tries too hard, gets out of synch and thus plays into the hands of offensively talented penalty killers. He did lead the NHL in +/- once or twice.

  • Gretzky also led the nhl in goals scored against while he was on the ice. He has the all time record with 2285..how a forward gets this record is beyond me..why you contend my post is beyond me..my comment was to show how Orr played all aspects of the game..99 needed a map and a white cane to get around the defensive zone..he was horrid on defense for over 10 years.

  • I don't want to take ANYTHING away from Wayne Gretsky, folks. I've watched them both play. But Orr was better. The eyes cannot deceive you. If you watched as much hockey as I've watched (and played the game too), there can be no mistaking who could control a game - take it over and carry a team on a bad night.

  • Gretz played the last third of his career with a bad back. Know what else???

This thread is begining to sound more and more like, "My dad can beat YOUR dad"

SO I am out of here

  • I am sure you will be missed..thanks for coming out.

  • i agree he's the best to ever live in hockey and im a montreal fan!

  • -Bobby Orr

    2-Lemieux

    3-Greztsky

** Actually, I agree with this rating. I think that Gretzky is more problematic; there are lots of other players IMO across the ages who could contest for, "third place."

if you watch some of the other orr videos on youtube you will see ridiculously incredible saves while playing 'goalie,' when Cheevers was down. Six Orrs: Goalie - proven! Right/left wing: Proven (he broke from either side.) Center - PROVEN. Defense - no comment needed. 6 Orrs beats anyone

  • he goes around people like there pylons

  • Most amazing hockey stats IMO are Montreal in (76-77?) Lost only 8 games all season, and outscored the opposition 387:173 !!!!! And THOSE 2 are the most amazing team stats I have seen since '55 when I watched my first game. I doubt they will ever be eclippsed (sp?), just as Wayne's 92 + 120 will never be beaten. His best season actually was the year he played 74/80 and had 87G and 118A this adjusts to 95 plus 126 for 221 pts in 80 g/p

His shot percentage that year was an amazing 27%

  • I find it interesting that you mention the 83/4 season..this is the same season that Fuhr got 14 pts in 45 gms, which would be 25 points in 80 games. Hmmmm, that is some major perspective for anyone at any time! Gogo 80's in the wild wild west..even a goalie can score 25 pts a season. Orr and Lemieux only wish they could have played at this time and place. A stat stackers paradise.

As much as I hated them that Montreal team was one of if not the greatest team ever..stacked with hall of famers.

  • Never. Mario came close to a 200 point season, Wayne had four of them

  • Like to have seen Wayne have serious back problems as Mario and do better.

  • Gretzky 2.4 ppg in his first 8 seasons, and he missed just 8 games in that time frame

Orr 1.4 pts per game = awesome (would have had 2 ppg as a fwd)

    Lemieux

    The rest of the best

  • Gretzky also averaged massive goals against while on the Ice too! One year he led the league in goals against..how is that..169 goals against ..over 2 goals a game while on the ice..the real numbers..while on ice numbers. Orr 1.46, Gretzky .83 points per game tgf-tga. Even Mario (.88) beats Gretzky, as does Bossy (1.19). Real stats not just cheap second assists..

  • WRONG.

    1. bobby orr

    2. bobby orr

    3. bobby orr.

  • 1-Bobby Orr

    2-Lemieux

    3-Greztsky

  • as a Bruins fan I believe Bobby and his teammates gave the best time New England sports ever had but sill nobody puts The Great One Last

  • Orr played every aspect of the game better than anyone else before or since.# 99 was a whiz when it came to offensive hockey, however, that just doesn't constitute the whole game.(& not enough to crown him as hockey's best player)Orr's +/- prove he played the 'whole game'He holds the single season +/-record as well as career +/- record.A +/-of 124 in one season may never be broken. For a career, histotal is twice as much as the next highest player.(Larry Robinson- another great defenceman)

  • Plus minus is more of a total team stat, and B was a strong Def team

  • Great video. I still rank Gretzky as the best ever and Orr as the second best.

  • The real stat..the one that wins games..the only stat that truly counts is this. While you are on the ice who scores and how much. While on the ice Gretzky has 3520 goals for 2285 against..a game average of .83 (1487 games). Orr has tgf of 1651 and tga of 781 for a 1.46 per game average (596 games, 66/67 n/a).
